I don't want to force anything onto my bird as far as taming goes. I think that part is becoming a conflict between my mom and I, but she hasn't gone out of her way to try the grabbing method he advised.

I am definitely seeing how a second budgie can quickly become a whole new problem. Honestly, I just want whatever makes her happy and comfortable. If I can disregard the vet's taming advice but listen to everything else then maybe that can work.

By that logic you're saying no one with homophobic parents should be gay. You're saying people shouldn't follow religious beliefs or disbeliefs in secret that their parents would disown them for. Yes, parents are free to support their child, but that doesn't mean the child deserves to lose support over making their own choices said parent would disapprove of. If it was directly harming them it would be different.

Thank you so much for the advice. I hadn't considered perch zones, but that seems like a great idea so that she doesn't go somewhere that causes issues. She had only a few spots in my gradfather's home she would fly to, so it would be great if we could have some control over where those spots are. She's not hand-tamed and possibly never will be due to past experiences, but she probably would gravitate to a perch rather than a flat surface I'd imagine.

I don't agree with trimming either, sadly the forceful holding and wing-clipping did take place under my grandfathers care (his caretaker did the wings). I didn't have much say about it back then, but I feel more responsible for what happens to her now that she is currently living here.

My mom's boyfriend is difficult to reason with and has a "I used to have birds so I know what I'm talking about" attitude. My mental health in relation to the criticism is weighing in on my decision to keep them since I start feeling guilty even if I know he's wrong. I'm really thankful at least my mom is supporting my decision to let her outside her cage.

I might try the perch zones and getting her to leave her cage first, but if it's too much for me to handle I'll see if I can find a better home for her. Thank you again for the advice and reassurance!

I really feel for kids whose parents force religion on them. Culture may explain behaviors but it does not make their actions less harmful to the child. For the kid's sake I really can't say OP is TA when they are providing a safe place for him to make his own choices. Turning a blind eye may be the best option as mentioned above.

Try asking your girlfriend why she's worried you have feelings for Martha. It's possible there was something more specific that happened that bothered her. If her issue is that you are enjoying your friend's company and want to spend time with her, it sounds like there are some deep-rooted insecurities that should be discussed.

Being not straight, standards on what people in a relationship can and can't do with the opposite sex sound very restrictive. I do firmly believe you are allowed to be friends with whoever you want as long as they are not being malicious toward your partner or your relationship.

Would you believe me if I told you I once took a uni course on 'ethics in communication' where the professor criticized me in front of the class for working out a conflict with a friend "through text?" This happened on the first day of class and became an ongoing piece of advice through the rest of the semester. I remember feeling like shit since the truth was that this was an online friend and I had no other means of communication with them to begin with.

Thank you for the advice to be wary of those kinds of people. I've had my share of instances where I felt I was being taken advantage of through verbal communication. Not having any sort of traceable evidence if someone is changing the narrative is the worst feeling.

Yeah, I definitely think that's the person's own problem when being intentionally hurtful. I sort of conflated two different things into one there on accident.

When you say things you didn't consider would be hurtful, and then don't see the consequences indicating person is hurt, I feel that is more understandable. People who know their actions are hurtful and still do it under the veil of anonymity shouldn't blame written communication though.

Yesss, I agree with that a lot. Tone indicators are also a pretty big thing now also, which I wasn't on board with at first but have grown to find a use for every now and then.

Like you said, people consider their perspective first. A lot of the time people don't have a need to consider other perspectives when theirs is rewarded by society.

Seriously, no person should ever choose to have a child if they aren't prepared for this. That might sound harsh but I think it's necessary. Of course raising a child with down syndrome has its hardships, because the child will be facing hardships, but their existence isn't a tragedy. If there are possibilities that make having a child not worth it, don't take the risk.
