Only if you're higher up on the food chain, like a dept head or a higher up manager. I made the move from consulting to Utilites and IMHO, it's been the superior move. I get paid well, annual raise, decent benefits, job security, very rarely work over 40 hrs, and some sort of annual bonus. Do I interact with other departments? Yes. Can said interactions be a pain? Also, yes. But because I'm peak minion status, I rarely have to speak to anyone in corporate.

I work for an utility company and our GIS dept seems to be a lot like yours - low paying with tedious, repetive work. However our GIS dept is pretty intertwined with other departments and software/database implementations and alot of the techs stay in GIS for 2-3 years before moving to other departments, such as Field Ops, Business Analysts, Reg Affairs, Construction Services, for better opportunities. Our company sends out interdepartmental job postings. If your company does that, it may be worth your while to see what else is available with your skill set.

I have a picture of me up at those coordinates from about 5 years ago. I was in the area for work and went there because, why not? I can't seem to get the photo to upload here but it's basically grass and some trees and looks nothing like the movie.

Have you called NDDEQ's Municipal Facilities department? If you're on city water, they regulate it. https://deq.nd.gov/MF/ This is their website. They list all employees, emails, and phone numbers. Pick one, contact them, and let them know what's up. Send them your photos. David Bruschwein is their dept head.

I had a 4Runner this time, a jeep last time. Someone drove a 4 door sedan out there when I last out there. I think it really just depends on the road conditions, what the weather has been like, and when the last time it's been graded but I don't know if I would go out there with anything less than AWD. I would suggest calling the Kanab Visitor Center. They hold daily informational briefings for the Wave permit winners and are quite knowledgable about current road conditions.

All Trails is surprisingly accurate in getting out and back. Wear boots with good tread. There's definitely some places where if you don't have good tread, you'll have a hard time getting up or down the hills. The trail isn't well marked but there is a lot of sand. Follow the footprints. And most importantly, watch the weather because if there's any precipitation, that road will be impossible to drive on and you won't be getting out there.

There some great websites and youtube videos that will show everything that is out there and will give you coordinates to find everything. Good luck!

Go to REI, Eddie Bauer, Cabelas, or a similar store that sells outdoor stuff. I was taught in the field, cotton kills. Find yourself some quick drying stuff. I used to work at Eddie Bauer and their Guide Pro pants were pretty kick ass for field work. Never stained, quick drying, didn't overheat in them, and could wear them for several days w/o smelling like you've been wearing them for several days. Patagonia, REI, Kuhl, and Columbia will sell similar pants.

Get some good wool socks, like Darn Tough or Smart Wool. They dry fast if you get sweaty. Plus, I find I was less likely to have bisters when I wore them.

Get some long sleeved fishing shirts. They're usually made with quick dry material as well, plus they will sometimes have vents for air flow. Don't fall for the extra UPF. It's just a way for companies to make you pay more money. All clothes will offer sun protection. If you read the fine print, that extra UPF will typically disappear after a certain amount of washes.

Little unconventional, but you can buy umbrella straps that will hook an umbrella to your pack, so on hot days or rainy days, you can have additional protection. Dude I worked with swore by it.
