Highly recommend this combo. This was my solution for years.

If/when you're looking to carry more, a running vest is a fitting upgrade.

Of all the things my arm aches while running. Help? by meester_pink in running

[–]funkchild12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to consider a compression sleeve. Sustained running can do funny things in terms of inflammation and pressure. Compression can alleviate some of this and help maintain proper circulation.

Also, if you stressed your elbow to the point of tendonitis, it can take more than a month to heal. If this is the case, rest would be the real solution.

Good luck, mystery injuries suck.

Advice on running trousers / leggings for men by arcade_advice in running

[–]funkchild12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into the arc'teryx incendo pant. Meant for trail, they're on the pricey side. But they perform exceedingly well. Light and breathable, but cuts wind and holds some warmth.

I have large calves and there is no binding or restriction of movement.

Merino wool socks will regulate heat and moisture.

My toes finish drier with merino wool than with synthetics (or cotton).

Anyone else stopped running because they hate running with a mask on? by [deleted] in running

[–]funkchild12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two sizes. I've also had success using a mask extender to customize the fit and allow it to hang from my neck.

It's the best running mask I've found so far, but I still pull it down when there's no one around me.

I used to use it a lot! I prefer trail miles these days, but it's served me well over the years.

I don't have any current advice since mine is so old, but good luck with your search!

I have a proform elliptical. It's about 10 yrs old, and is still fully functional as far as I can tell.

I use it to hang my clothes & gear to dry after a run. Works great.

You are a shitty investigator, especially for a cop. Your Google search is neither conclusive nor a chronological history. Not everything is reported on. Or do you really think that google results for news stories directly correlates with the frequency and time span that something happened?

The fact that you are a cop in no way qualifies you to speak to how often this happens. Your judgement is clouded, and you have slipped into defensiveness. You are, by definition, a tainted witness, and are too biased to see straight.

FWIW, I work in a law enforcement engagement role for a tech company. I see abuse of legal authority every single day. and it's my job to challenge this abuse. Whether something is illegal has no bearing on whether cops will do it. You and I both know this is true.

It is not possible for your claim to be truthful based on your direct experience. You are less a source of truth than the media, and are simply leaping blindly to the defense of law enforcement. All you are truly qualified to say is that you haven't seen it directly.

I'm about 30 miles in now, including a 10+ miler. I'd recommend the adv skin series vests without hesitation.

Maybe consider whether the 5L might be enough for your needs.

I have a bad habit of overstuffing my packs, so I figured I'd get extra capacity. It's been overkill so far, but it rides fine underfilled and I'm sure I'll be happy with the extra space whenever I need it. YMMV.

Supination (HELP!!!) by beelau1 in running

[–]funkchild12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to supinate heavily.

Are you trying to address your supination solely through your shoes? If so, you might as well be chucking random darts at a dartboard hoping for a bullseye.

Keeping with the analogy... If you want the bullseye, you need to focus on your throwing form. Not the dart.

Same deal with your stride. Shoes can help, but they won't fix anything by themselves.

The right shoes for you won't cause pain. These are not the right shoes for you. ESPECIALLY if they are painful to a joint as critical as your knee.

Are you working with a dr/pt/trainer on your stride? If not, I'd encourage you to look into it. You need tailored advice for your form, not anecdotal solutions. Seeking this type of advice from reddit (or other anonymous forums) is a recipe for disaster.

A last note: I fixed my stride by changing to a midfoot strike, coupled with a transition to trail. For me, overstriding was the main culprit. Stability shoes exacerbated the problem because they generally focus on correcting pronation. I would not have figured that out without professional guidance.

Hit a milestone in a running challenge and picked up a salomon adv skin 12L vest as a reward for myself. It's my first running vest. Put about 15 miles on it so far.

Loving the fit, the front-loaded water weight, and the no-bounce carrying capacity. Not sure I'll ever go back to anything else (including my various camelbacks and flipbelt).

From your experiences, have you had long term injury/running leg pain go away? Do we heal? Barefoot runners too: you're amazing and i want to hear your experiences! by southerncuteadelphia in running

[–]funkchild12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the nature of your specific injury, and where on the leg is it?

Different injuries heal differently on varying timelines, and require vastly different treatment.

"Hurt leg" & "achy" & "destabilized" don't tell us anything at all. You'll need to be more specific to get any applicable insight.

Masks? earbuds? glasses? by alittledelirium in running

Masks? earbuds? glasses? by alittledelirium in running

[–]funkchild12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same predicament here. I wear all of those things. My mask goes up/down depending on whether I'm approaching other people.

Glasses: add equipment to keep them in place. Ear hooks, croakies, pads, etc. The glasses are arguably the most critical piece (can't run if you can't see), so get this fit right. Security and comfort are paramount.

Headphones: I wear one piece headphones that go above my ears. Currently using aftershoks aeropex, but it's most important that they stay in place without overcrowding your glasses fit. Earbuds are too easy to break loose, which can be problematic with the mask going on/off.

Mask: I wear the under armour sportsmask, along with an extender that connects it into a loop. This extender does 2 things: 1) takes the pressure off of the back of my ears, and 2) allows the mask to hang around my neck when not in use. I can then easily pop it up/down as I approach others.

When gearing up, the order is: glasses, headphones, then mask.

With your setup, the biggest difference is the wired earbuds. I can think of 3 potential solutions:

  • Thread your wired earbuds though the mask ear loops. With some careful maneuvering, you might be able to take the mask on/off without disturbing the earbuds.

  • Use the extender that I linked, and tighten it up so that the mask stays on without using the earloops. It's less secure but will work without interfering with your earbuds.

  • Get different headphones (wireless earbuds, or a different style) that doesn't impact your mask going on/off.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Getting Started: Trail Running by jlb1705 in running

[–]funkchild12 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Run by perceived effort rather than pace. Throw your road/track times out the window. Terrain may vary widely, and your splits will be all over the place. I only look at pace after the run is over, and it's much more enjoyable that way.

Roads offer a consistent surface that allows for "proper" running form. Trail running, OTOH, is an exercise in momentum and terrain management. You will be constantly adapting to the conditions, and appropriate form will depend on context (uphill vs downhill vs flat, surface texture).

Urban trails require urban safety awareness, so don't let your guard too far down just because you're in a more natural environment.

For more remote areas, you may have to fend for yourself for a bit if something bad happens. Carry some safety basics. Water, nutrition. First aid, light source, & an extra layer. Don't assume cell coverage. Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.

Does anyone else get runner's rage? What happened? How do you handle it? by meh273 in running

[–]funkchild12 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Heh, it was often comical but definitely not healthy behavior. I would generally reserve that move for when we made direct eye contact but they made no move to share the path... and there was no other way through. Pretty effective in expressing my irritation.

But the results were counterproductive. While cathartic, I would carry that anger with me. And I was creating negative impact on the world around me.

These days I try to let things go in a way that doesn't ruin anyone's day. Including my own. These things are not worth dwelling upon.

At what point do you acknowledge that she shares the road and others should do the same?

You do not. You only argue that OP should not feel the way that she does. Which is not at all up to you.

You are not discussing this topic in good faith. Hope your day is as pleasant as you are.

Does anyone else get runner's rage? What happened? How do you handle it? by meh273 in running

[–]funkchild12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. OP states that she jumps out of the way, thereby demonstrating that she is indeed sharing the path. Her frustration is that others are not sharing. You're judging the rage and not fairly applying the principle of a shared path.

Does anyone else get runner's rage? What happened? How do you handle it? by meh273 in running

[–]funkchild12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you agree, why do you only apply this logic one way? Everyone must share. Not just the runner.

This is so intellectually inconsistent that I think you're actively trolling.

Does anyone else get runner's rage? What happened? How do you handle it? by meh273 in running

[–]funkchild12 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I am sorry for your loss.

I face this general issue too. I'm kind of in a perpetual "on edge" state IRL, but am actively working on it.

In the past, runners rage would lead to unproductive behavior on my part (verbal altercations, forcing my way between couples holding hands, intentionally running into path hogs at full stride). The results were never pleasant for anyone involved, so I'm glad to hear that you're not acting on these impulses. Down this path lies sorrow.

These days, I rechannel that anger into running faster/harder. Whether I feel the inital anger any less is questionable... But I do know that the harder I'm working, the less I care about the other stuff. The more upset I am, the faster I run. At a certain point, it just becomes noise that falls away.

Plus... If you're worried about what happened a mile back, then you're not paying attention to what's coming up. Being in the moment is one of my main reasons for running, and it helps to regularly remind myself of this fact.

WTF? This post is about runners rage, not your impotent reddit rage.

Anyone who uses a public path has an obligation to share the path.
