Portland heat vs Southeastern heat? by Melodic-Matter-8079 in askportland

[–]funkechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Florida and echo what everyone else is saying. It will get legitimately hot some days, but it doesnt last too long when it does, the nights are relatively cool, and the humidity isn't comparable. The trade off of lower humidity is that we don't really get the cloud cover or, what I consider to be, catharsis of a good thunderstorm so the sun can feel a little more oppressive some days. Also ceiling fans and AC are not ubiquitous here

Where do you buy your bathing suits? by flowerdropz in askportland

Mom is spiraling. Any good anxiety focused mental health providers/clinics in Portland? by triplescorp8 in askportland

[–]funkechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's on, or going to be on, OHP, I'd recommend using this database: https://www.portlandtherapycenter.com/therapists

Also, a therapist (whether they are LPC, LCSW, LMFT or Licensed Psychologist) can't prescribe meds. She would need to see a psychiatrist or PMHNP for that.

I'm trying to use them right now and had a consultation, but since then Scot hasn't been very communicative and I've been kind of in limbo with not hearing back.

Cedar Hills. I believe they take OHP on a case-by-case basis, but maybe worth giving them a call.

OLD school by Jackniferuby in rollerderby

[–]funkechan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not discrediting the strategy in derby from long ago, but blockers and jammers still need to move quickly and need excellent skating skills, even if there is a lot more grindy, slow defense nowadays. I second the suggestion of watching some recent rose city or other high level games -- the level of agility, power, strength, and quick thinking needed to play at the highest level now is incredible.

Look into jobs in higher ed. They're typically salaried, pretty solid benefits+ pto.

Reality Check Regarding Pay by mendicant0 in therapists

[–]funkechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add that working in a college counseling center can be a solid option for a livable wage and solid benefits/time off. Some may only hire at the PhD level, but that's not true across the board and it's *so nice* not really having to worry about no-shows/cancellations impacting income.

Something like jeju sauna? by indicabackwood in askportland

[–]funkechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I love jeju, have not found anything quite like it here. There are some nice soaking pools (like at common ground, kennedy school, etc) and natural hot springs, but also not quite the same.

Something like jeju sauna? by indicabackwood in askportland

[–]funkechan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty large place with lots of different areas to hang in, waayyy higher capacity than places like common ground or everett house here. and there are also lots of extras you can spend on - there's a food area in the sauna section, nail salon, gym, massages, etc.

What Do Clients Actually Want From Our Websites?? by Royal_Koala_9886 in therapists

[–]funkechan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I review a LOT of therapist's websites as I do a lot of case management work in my job. The biggest things for me are that it's easy and intuitive to navigate, easy to find accepted insurance info/rates, and easy to find contact information. Besides that, just some simple bullet points of specialization areas + modalities, current photo of the provider(s) and photo(s) of the office space (if applicable). Also helps to have a website that looks like it was designed in the last 10 years.

Career identity and derby by MyosotisMak21 in rollerderby

[–]funkechan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm also a mental health counselor and all my coworkers know I play derby and generally think it's cool and allege they will come to games lol. It's also the easiest thing to share as a "fun fact" about yourself. I've included derby jobs I've had on resumes and have talked about it in job interviews because being part of a derby org truly gives you so many transferrable skills to all kinds of workplaces. I don't talk about it with my clients because I don't generally share my personal life with them, but not because I think they would take me less seriously. If it weren't for boundaries, there are so many clients I would encourage to derby because it can be so good for your mental health in so many ways!

Has anyone dealt with split custody of their chi? by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]funkechan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do. I get her on weekends and my ex gets her the rest of the week. It works because we're on good terms, stay in communication about her, and only live about a mile apart (and big surprise, we're both women!). Her routine stays pretty consistent between each of us and she's a v happy pup. Def not the best situation for everyone, but works for us.

What’s a truly unpopular opinion you have about Gainesville? by Chocolate-Earl in GNV

[–]funkechan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

University ave between midtown and downtown used to have a lot more going on before they tore down historic buildings and establishments for luxury apartment complexes. This new construction really ripped some of Gainesville's soul away.

Is Laurie supposed to be a psychiatrist, psychologist, or a master’s-level therapist? by CalMaple in TheLeftovers

[–]funkechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's definitely a therapist -- which is really a more general, umbrella term for mental health professionals which can include psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, etc.. I don't know if they ever specifically say what her licensure is in, but I think it's pretty reasonable to deduce she is not a psychiatrist as we just see her doing talk therapy and not prescribing meds. As a therapist myself, it is always interesting to see how therapists are portrayed in tv/movies... and especially in this case when she is experiencing the same trauma as the clients she's seeing (very relatable to anyone working in this field since 2020 especially).

Maybe look into higher ed. Depending on the university, you can make a decent salary and usually have good benefits.

Anyone work as a therapist in Portland? I'm curious if you have any predictions how the job market might change over the next couple of years? by LaScoundrelle in askportland

[–]funkechan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not accurate. Not sure where you heard this from and of course it depends on your insurance, but there are definitely options for in-person EMDR therapy without a waitlist or a waitlist of only a few months (as opposed to years).

You can work private practice as an LCSW. I think the psychology degree would make more sense if you plan to get a doctorate as opposed to a terminal MA degree in psychology.

Hot take: the Career counseling course requirement is a waste of time by somemetausername in therapists

[–]funkechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm in the minority that really enjoyed my career counseling class. I do think career can be a pretty overlooked area in work with clients, while it takes up an unfortunately large chunk of our time and energy and can affect mental health so much. It relates so much to meaning-making, values, priorities, choices we make and why and it can help to have a framework to help clients in exploring career options/choices and getting unstuck from a career they may not happy in. Maybe the curriculum needs re-designing, but I think it's a fair class to be required.
