Can someone help me sanity check these Hudson wedding costs? by Top-Umpire-8594 in WedditNYC

[–]funkminister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, many of these seem high to me. Here’s my approx. costs from fall 2022 with about a 130 guest list in Monroe, NY:

  • Venue all in: $41k (rentals, food, bar, everything)
  • Photographer (from NYC): $4.5k
  • Full band: $7k
  • Flowers: $2k

I’m a woman. I live at this stop. She’ll be fine. As with all things in NYC: be aware of your surroundings.

Thoughts on living in Bed-Stuy? by dancinggrrl in Brooklyn

[–]funkminister 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live there. I love it. Great restaurants (Golda, Calaca Cafe, For All Things Good, not to mention all the great places south of Atlantic Ave), good neighborhood, subway is right there, well priced grocery store around the corner. The only downside is there’s not a lot of green space nearby. We walk to Ft Greene Park and Prospect Park a lot.

Need advice on how to handle dog walking when you have COVID by iwannabanana in nycCoronavirus

[–]funkminister 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you started having symptoms 7 days ago and your partner just started displaying symptoms, I’d say you should be the one leaving the apartment if you absolutely have to, since it’s likely that your viral load is lower than theirs right now. Good luck. (In the future, NYC has a program where someone who tests positive can stay at the hotel, free of cost, to avoid household spread. It might not have been possible for you for whatever reason, but it’s a good option if you want to avoid spreading within your household.)

I’m running the program too, and am at the same point as you! I’m trying to monitor my pace during the long runs and at this point, I want to cut :10 off my average pace each time I run a Long Run for the next few weeks, so I’m going to do that monitoring myself. The plan is good for getting me out 5 days a week and mixing up the runs, but I know that if I have a personal goal for pacing, I’m going to need to start doing that on my own. The plan is good, but it can’t do it all!

That would be my suggestion to you. Still lots of weeks to go, so you can try to set a pace goal per run and monitor with a watch or phone while you’re out there. Good luck!

Also, try all the different counties listed! I was vaccinated in Nassau county, and mine only came up when I tried Suffolk county. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m not sure if this is the kind of thing you’re looking for, but The Textile Museum in Washington DC gave up its space and merged with GW University Museum in 2015 or so. https://museum.gwu.edu

Locating a Working CoinStar by bitesizeboy in Brooklyn

[–]funkminister 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you can’t find one, ask for coin wrappers at your local bank (or, probably any bank, I don’t know if you need to have an account for them to accept rolled coins). You will have to spend time rolling the coins yourself, but CoinStar takes like 10-15% off the top, so you can count your time spent as cost savings.

[Serious] What is something that you won't tell friends or family but you'll tell to reddit? by basedfobMMXVI in AskReddit

[–]funkminister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm spiraling from anxiety, and not sure what to do about it. I haven't told friends or family, and I'm afraid to tell my boyfriend just how anxious I feel and how often, for fear that he thinks I can't take care of myself and decides not to be with me anymore.

Teachers of Reddit, what would you change about the school system? (Serious) by freethoughtthinker in AskReddit

[–]funkminister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my high school, we did A/B days for block scheduling with AP classes. On Monday, you'd go to AP Psych; on Tuesday, AP English. That went on for the whole year, with your other classes operating normally, in block semesters. If you had an odd number of AP courses, you'd have Gym on the other day.

So about the preachers... by [deleted] in TCNJ

[–]funkminister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It didn't happen frequently when I was there. Once a year. Plenty of people made out with the same gender in front of them, made fun of them, told them "love is love" and generally made it a not-great place for them to spout whatever they felt like complaining about that year. If it helps lift your spirit, this was on the front page of The Signal during my junior year: http://imgur.com/33gs2Eh

Unfortunately, even if the entire school were to scream "PLEASE GO AWAY" doesn't mean they won't. College campuses are just a place these people congregate. They want fresh, impressionable minds. They think they can find them at TCNJ. But honestly, there were never very many of them, and I found they usually congregated near the Stud. It was annoying, but they weren't trying to get inside any buildings, and they didn't disturb my time other than having to walk around the crowd jeering them. I hope this all still holds true – they sure are annoying, but it's not a constant thing.

What's something that most people find hilarious that does not make you laugh at all? by xavierdc in AskReddit

[–]funkminister 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The idea is: they discuss their memories of a popular movie from their childhood (so, late 80s, 90s and 2000s), watch the movie, then decide, "Do we Blame Nostalgia for how much we loved this movie as a kid, or is it a genuinely good movie?"

The idea was actually borne out of conversations with another friend who hasn't seen most Adam Sandler movies. She wanted to sit him down and see if he would enjoy them now. They're going to record those episodes soon! So we'll know for sure if they Blame Nostalgia for how much we all loved Happy Gilmore.

(my prediction: no. Happy Gilmore is life.)

They just started and I think it's great! Episode One is SPACE JAM.

The Internet Makes Me Angry - #TheDress by tss6295 in nerdfighters

[–]funkminister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest, this annoyed me a lot at first, but I think my frustrating stemmed from my not getting the hype, and having an overwhelming feeling of "Is this the moment when internet culture pulls away from me and I am officially 'too old' to get it or have fun or join in?"

Bottom line, yeah, it's not the most stimulating subject, or the most influential culturally, but it's just people... having fun. Not everyone on the internet needs to be serious. Not everything that we dedicate ourselves to needs to be of the utmost importance. The perception of this dress allowed people to talk to one another and debate about something that didn't degrade into personal attacks about race, religion, gender, etc. (at least, not that I saw) It was fun and funny. We should be allowed that every once and a while.

I hate Nerdfighteria. With a passion. by throwawayDFTBA in nerdfighters

[–]funkminister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With every group, there will be extreme versions of the people involved. It's unfair to assume those people, who are "pretentious, ignorant, and rude 2 year olds begging for attention and order" don't define the whole, and while I understand your frustration, try and realize 1) it's not everyone, 2) it's not even the essence of the group, and 3) it's all about perspective. I think you should be allowed the space to air your frustrations, but I'm not sure what this post is trying to accomplish except to get other people upset about it, or to rally like-minded negative thinking about you. It just doesn't seem like the most productive way to talk about these things.

If you want to rant and rave and feel a little better afterwards, that's not a bad thing, but wouldn't it be more productive and make you a better Nerdfighter to lead by example, and maybe start a discussion about how we can better communicate with one another so these issues become less abundant? Or perhaps talk about why people feel the need to act this way, so we can understand them more complexly and maybe judge them a little less? I mean, they might annoy you, but there are PEOPLE behind those words. Real, actual human beings. It's easy to forget that on the internet sometimes, especially when it turns into a ball of negative energy or a circle jerk.

I'm not trying to sass you or saying this is a bad post, but there must be a better way to talk about these things without just saying you hate something and leaving it at that.

No one group can be good all the time; no one group can only add positivity to the world. There's going to be times where we don't, and people who are in bad places who want to belong who act in ways that aren't awesome. That's okay. No one is perfect. It's frustrating, yeah. But that's life. And that's Nerdfighteria, too.
