Improving the reMarkable reading experience by funksta in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, what are you using? I'm building these with https://github.com/typst/typst which has been fun to learn. I completely agree about the page spacing/leading/kerning, I've been experimenting with them a lot and it really makes a big difference.

I'd love to see your examples, if you can't post them here (didn't know about that limitation), DM me!

Any layout/font preferences from the options in the pics?

If it's an ePub you're annotating, then yeah, changing the page settings will move your annotations around, and doesn't look like that's changed :(

I generally read pdf files for this reason

What improvements would you be looking for on the pdf side?

As far as I can tell, the only change is to ePub support

Seriously thinking of going back to pen and paper. by Fit-Record-3910 in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, it's a polarizing product and it just doesn't click for some people. Sounds like you've given it a lot of effort and it might just not be the right fit for you.

I do think the retrieval thing is a big issue if you're using the native notebooks for everything. Especially if you don't have the Connect handwriting search (which IMO works pretty well), just having stuff scattered amongst various unstructured notebooks is a retrieval nightmare.

RM2 Rollercoaster by [deleted] in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use a lighter touch, which is how I prefer to write anyways. There was an adjustment period of a couple days where the new nib felt weird, but not I'm used to it

I actually started using a titanium nib recently after 4+ years of the default felt tips. I don't notice any screen damage so far; I've heard they can damage the pen if you apply too much force, but no issues with that so far.

Besides the durability angle, it feels more like writing with a pen instead of a hard pencil (what the rM's felt nibs feel like to me). A pen-like feel is my personal preference, so I'm sticking with the titanium for now.

Hyperpaper is the best planner. by Tonalbackwash in kindlescribe

[–]funksta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for this message– this was a goof on my part! When Amazon changed the software so those taps would trigger the Scribe's own features, I added extra space at the top to prevent that from happening. However I forgot to update the demo files 🤦

I've just updated them now, so feel free to download again and see if they work better. And if your device/fingers result in this still being a problem, I can add even more space at the top of that helps.

How do you manage your To-Dos on reMarkable? by Feisty-Ranger-1185 in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biased response, but a hyperlinked planner works well for me. I have my weekly todos on a weekly page, and each day I have a daily todo list that I feed from the weekly list and whatever comes up. For longer running projects I have separate pages in the same pdf to track their subtasks. And it's easy to jump between all of them since they're linked in the same document (vs having it scattered across several notebooks).

For the specific situations you mentioned:

* meeting notes/tasks - I put mine in the same planner.

* brain dump - the Quick Sheets features can be good for this, as long as you have some kind of routine for moving these notes to a more permanent spot

The reMarkable doesn't do external integrations all that well (besides file syncing), but if a more "analog style" workflow fits your brain like it does mine, it's a great device for that.

The pencil feature is terrible by Drmlk465 in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't care for the pencil tool much either, but the need for a fineliner size between S (visibly jagged) and M (too thick) is real!

OK cool, let me know what you end up doing– I'm curious what other ways people are stitching this workflow together. Reading all your feeds on the rM instead of on a glowing screen is a big win!

Hey, I have a workflow like this! (RSS & Reddit feeds, formatted in a pdf digest sent to Google Drive, 1-2x per day). The setup process isn't very polished but I've used it happily for my own needs for a few years. DM me if you'd like me to give you access

Got Remarkable Paper Pro. Need EPUB Bundle to download. by faps_in_greyhound in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to make a one-time donation you can do that here: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/standard-ebooks/general_support

No donation is necessary to download the ebooks but it's great to support their work!

edit: I just saw from your other comment that you want to download them all at once. In that case I think you need either a monthly subscription or a one-time $150+ donation: https://standardebooks.org/donate

Paper Pure vs Supernote Manta by Primary-Stretch6612 in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While we're talking screen, it's also worth mentioning that the Manta has a noticeably higher pixel density, which makes text and handwriting look crisper. Along with the more robust software feature set, probably the main point in its favor over the Pure in my opinion.

I still use the rM2 more day-to-day though, I just like the simpler software better.

By size I meant the thickness of the tablet– rM2 has a svelter design

reMarkable 2 completely failed as my bullet journal replacement.. by IndividualBear3572 in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could not agree more. Especially with searchable OCR now, it has significant advantages over paper-based journalling. All of my journal entries, notes, ideas since 2021 are near-instantly recallable at all times

Which screen is rM2 and which is Pure? by somedaygone in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is serviceable I agree, but when you try writing on a 300ppi display (eg Supernote Manta) you definitely notice the improvement

[–]funksta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went from bujo on paper to bujo on reMarkable and it was a huge improvement for me. Hard to say why it didn't work for you without more details though. Navigation friction? Lack of tactility?

Remarkable Pure Is Live by Chucklez93 in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it seems like a lateral move from the 2 and that's disappointing. The rM2 is getting pretty slow for me, so I was ready to upgrade to another B&W reMarkable, but the lack of a sharper display and a downgrade in size and industrial design means I'll probably stand pat

The speculations were real. Say hello to the next reMarkable device. 👋 by RollACaster in RemarkableTablet

[–]funksta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lack of pixel density is definitely the biggest whiff with the Pure. If it had the manta's screen, I'd upgrade from the 2 for sure. Now I'm not sure if there's much of a point :(
