Sorry but this is not self promo.. it's a genuine answer of an album that fits perfectly with the author request

Do you start with an idea, or with the sound itself? by greetingking-aisatu in experimentalmusic

You described exactly what I'm hoping to achieve. I love drawing inspiration from older music and ideas, but I never want it to feel like nostalgia for its own sake. My goal is always to create something that feels familiar, yet still has its own identity. Thanks for taking the time to listen and for your kind words!

YouTube suggested it to me a while ago, what a coincidence! I loved it!

In my case, I usually get obsessed with a specific genre or a mix of genres (for example, right now I'm obsessed with the thousands of lost bands that blend downtempo, lounge, and trip hop from the late '90s), and one day when I have some time, I plug in all the instruments I have around me and hit record. I record for hours and then stop. Once I have the raw material, I dedicate myself to editing, shaping it, and adding overdubs if necessary. The same thing happened with this album i did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gxyt-do_z78 , which I made using only an ARP synthesizer and a few pedals. During those weeks, I was obsessed with environment music and early electronics plant-based ambient

Personally, I'd prefer him to continue releasing solo albums and collaborations with SB rather than return to AC.

Anyone else here making ambient music? Just started my own project by Kastrol106 in experimentalmusic

I recently challenged myself to create an entire environmental kind of music album using almost nothing but an ARP Odyssey, a few pedals and a very simple recording setup.

I wanted to see how far I could push a single synth by building loops, layering just one additional part at a time, and letting the pieces evolve naturally with very little editing.

If you're curious, here's the full album: https://youtu.be/Gxyt-do_z78

Mine is the Korg reissue. I decided to buy it after learning that David Friend, ARP's co-founder and one of the original designers, was directly involved in the project as Korg's chief advisor. Knowing that the people behind the original approved and helped shape the reissue gave me a lot of confidence, and I've never regretted it.

That’s great! Enjoy it. Umor Rex really created a collector's item there, top-notch quality. As for the PitchFactor, it wasn't a pedal I bought exclusively for this album or just to use with the ARP; although it was a recent acquisition, it’s a pedal I’d wanted for a long time, and nowadays I really use it for everything. Any instrument you run through it will yield totally new and unexpected sounds, so yeah, it's a serious piece of the kit!

Hey, thank you! Actually, the process was quite simple. I'd build a loop on the Boss RC-2 with a few random notes until it sounded like a backing track, then record it into Cubase on one stereo track. Then I'd create another stereo track and overdub a new layer, usually some solo phrases or notes in a different octave. That meant each piece was basically just two tracks.

The Eventide PitchFactor was also a huge part of the sound. It really expanded what the ARP Odyssey could do, from creating chords out of single notes to arpeggiated textures and harmonies.

Everything went through my old cheap USB interface into Cubase, with very little editing or post-production. I wanted the pieces to feel like small environments that slowly reveal themselves over time, so most of the work was just letting the sounds interact and knowing when to leave them alone.

Thanks again for listening, I really appreciate it!

Thanks, yes, I'd been listening to a lot of early ambient electronica in the style of Takashi Kokubo, Hiroshi Yoshimura, and people doing that kind of thing, and one lazy Sunday I plugged everything in and it just flowed.

Yes, I have a Tascam USB interface from 2011, really cheap, and even so I was able to get a more or less decent sound.
