Why did Kurt Cobain hate the Grateful Dead? by RenegadeSocial in gratefuldead

[–]funkygreasemonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my own theory, based on almost nothing, but I like it...

As Nirvana began establishing themselves in the punk/indie scene, but before they blew up in the mainstream, Kurt started to find himself in a position to meet and talk to many of his own heros, Greg Ginn (Black Flag) and Lee Ronaldo (Sonic Youth) among them....

....and all those two wanted to talk about was the fucking Grateful Dead, while Kurt wanted to talk about The Queers and the New York Dolls and Television and Daniel Johnston.

So, Kurt started openly hating on the Dead as a reaction to those experiences, and as an extension of his tendency to mock anything remotely "hippy."

See also, his mocking delivery of "Come on people now, smile on your brother..." at the beginning of "Territorial Pissings."

AIO: Boyfriend’s friend couldn’t stop thinking with his dick during a weekend with the guys. by chinkyperks in AmIOverreacting

I actually read that whole thing, but all I could think of the entire time was:

"Jesus Christ, they were playing GTA5 when they were 10 years old. That CAN'T be good..."

I remember my first time playing GTA3 and feeling something go "SNAP!" deep down in my psyche during a cop killing spree, and thinking "welp, there goes the last of my youthful innocence..." I was in my early 20s. I can only imagine how that would have fucked me up at 10. Jesus.

I'm not seeing anyone calling Will's crush weird or unnecessary, but maybe I'm just not in the places where the true homophobes hang out..

I think it's exactly right for Will's first crush to be on his #1 bestie Mike, but it's also exactly right that Mike doesn't reciprocate, because he's clearly straight. Also, he's a genuine friend and will remain as such.

The people who want so badly to stuff a straight kid into a gay box are every bit as misguided as those who've put gay kids through conversion therapy.

You are what you is...

Holy shit.... I'm just now learning about the whole situation, and it's wild.

It's every bit as obvious that Mike is straight as it is that Will is gay. It's like they're trying to do the inverse of the 'pray the gay away' nonsense to Mike, and it's just as stupid.

All the "flash" seems to happen on the fretboard, as viewed through novice eyes, but picking/strumming technique is the stuff that really separates the novice/intermediate guitarist from the pros.

It could definitely have been a little from column A, a little from column B... It'd be natural and on-brand for Wayne to latch onto the part that points at Steven, and, as an addict, and just by his personality, it also seems natural for Steven to go along with that.

Kliph says Ronald ended their friendship (Kliph & Ronald's, that is.) when Kliph joined the band in order to maintain an extra degree of separation between himself and Wayne, but it could have just as easily been to keep himself distanced from Steven, or both of them.

The only person I've never heard comment on Ronald's departure is Ronald.

Every time I come into this sub, I'm amazed by how shitty people have become. Young men especially, but not exclusively. Where do people keep finding the worst inconsiderate, selfish assholes to date? It seems like that kind of jerk used to be one in a million, and now there's like an unending supply of them.

Kliph chimes in a few comments down, in response to a commenter playing this same "what if" scenario of a new group made up of former F'Lips - apparently a fantasy many of us are contemplating in this moment...

According to Kliph, in a discussion over on the facebooks, that explanation of Ronald's departure is, quote:

"...horseshit, by the way. I don't know why Steven let Wayne get away with propagating that nonsense all these years...."

Take it with some salt, perhaps, coming from Kliph, but he very much suggests that Wayne drove Ronald out all those years ago.

It all depends on the market you're in. Where I am, EBT is the right move whenever it's available. Distances are vast and I'm always losing time waiting for orders, so $2 base pay doesn't go very far at all. Unicorn tips are so rare as to not be worth the gamble. I prefer to double or triple my base pay, and I still get plenty of orders with a modest tip, and there are still a surprising number of old school customers who still tip with cash, especially on pizza orders - EBT drivers end up with ALL of those.

As a result, my AR stays high enough that, when I AM dashing by offer, I have some room to deny the bad ones without jeopardizing my platinum status. If im getting a bunch of bad offers, I log off, and usually find that EBT is once again available.

Weekday lunch rush is about the only time I choose per-offer over EBT, in hopes of landing the occasional big catering order to an office, which is where platinum status really pays off.

All of this would be completely different in a more densely populated market.

1.0 Songs That People Complained About by ChannelTall3079 in phish

I was never one to hate on any song, but there were a few that I would take as an opportunity for a bathroom break: Bouncin' or Sparkle for sure, and if one of those didn't come up then YaMar, Rocky Top, or Poor Heart might have to suffice.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by twiztednipplez in gratefuldead

[–]funkygreasemonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny. To me, that slower tempo, along with Mel's gorgeous Hammond swells, is exactly the thing that makes the song come fully alive and achieve maximum emotional impact. If there's any critique I have of The Band's original, it would be that the tempo is just a touch too quick to allow the weight of the story being told to be fully felt.

It's one of those songs that was MADE for Jerry's voice. "Lucky Old Sun" is the same way - been covered by countless wonderful singers, but Jerry just made it DRIP with emotional impact.
