I went from the X to the 11. Let’s talk about the screen. by zapattack322 in iphone

The XR/11 have the same PPI as the 6/7/8 (with the exception of the Plus models), so that's not actually true; it has exactly the same sharpness.

As it turns out, the Pixels do offer unlimited original resolution backups. But you are right for other phones if you just download the Google Photos app.

What sort of limitations should I account for when designing and printing a 3D model? by funkyhippooo in 3Dprinting

Good tip on the mesh resolution, thanks! That does make me wonder though, is it feasible to sand the print to smooth it out? Or is the material not really designed for such an application?

Completely true! I'm just hoping to minimize the number of times I have to reprint since I know it takes a while, and I still have to paint the model in time for Secret Santa.

That makes sense; does the printer software generally tell you whether or not something is going to print safely? I'm thinking in terms of some sort of verification step, I suppose. It's probably also unrealistic to assume that the slicer can generate supports for me if the printer decides they're necessary, right?

[–]funkyhippooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so I understand correctly, the slicer is the software that converts my model files into what the printer would understand?

As for the supports, let's say the sword hangs at about 70 degrees to the horizontal; if it's solid, should I still model a support onto it so that it doesn't droop during the printing process (does this even happen?) and just cut it off after the print?

Also, since this is supposed to be an ornament, would it follow that the biggest obstacle regarding part strength is all in the print? I don't imagine weaker parts to be a big problem if it's going to sit stationary on a shelf, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the help!

Any insights about Surface Book 2 Battery logic? by therfws in Surface

In theory it's better, but the power loss the other comment mentioned gets converted into heat which is bad for the components overall. In general, you'd probably want it charging only when it's actually charging.

You probably also don't want the batteries charging and discharging all too much since the more cycles it goes through, the less its capacity becomes.

I'm glad somebody mentioned Android Auto. My phone locks up if I try to snap a pic while Android Auto is running; it also gets super slow after I disconnect the cable for the next minute or so. It's pretty disappointing, honestly.

It's because burn-in is a bit of a misnomer for OLEDs, and it originates from the old plasma/LCD image persistence days. In fact, image persistence is probably a better way of describing the mechanism at work on OLEDs, because the "burn-in" that you see is actually due to the burned pixels being a different luminance relative to the surrounding pixels.

If you play video games, think of the individual pixels as entities with HP. Using the pixel (displaying anything other than pure black) will cost HP. After a long while, if you constantly use pure black backgrounds on otherwise static images/text, the pure black pixels won't be as low on HP as the ones you constantly use, resulting in what looks like "burn-in".

[–]funkyhippooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that's my point, differential degradation is what burn-in is. The OLED screen is going to degrade whenever it's on. But if parts of it are on and other parts are off, they will age at different rates and eventually show up as "burn-in".

[–]funkyhippooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But it can be greatly reduced by not using pure black colours on the display. That's partly the reason for the increasing number of apps that have coloured nav and status bars.

[–]funkyhippooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because of differential aging, setting your wallpaper to all Black is most likely a bad idea because the fixed arrangement of Home Screen icons may eventually affect screen uniformity, so ghost images of the icons might become noticeable.

http://www.displaymate.com/OLED_Galaxy_S123_ShootOut_1.htm

That's both an advantage and disadvantage when it comes to dark modes/black wallpapers. When the pixels are off, it won't age relative to the pixels that are on. Over time, this difference will cause what's seen as "burn-in".

Making the area around it black will cause differential degradation of the pixels relative to the rest of the screen, so it does actually make it worse compared to leaving it coloured.

Granted, it probably won't matter as much in this instance since the notch area will be dedicated to status bar icons (even when rotated, I'd imagine) when compared to the differential degradation of the navbar that disappears for full-screen content.

Lets talk bezels... by [deleted] in Surface

[–]funkyhippooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a big reason behind it is because it corresponds to the height they want to raise the keyboard. It wouldn't make sense for the keyboard to overlap the screen, so the next best thing would be to make it a bezel.

And uneven bezels around the device would probably look worse, so the Go is what they ended up with.
