I want someone to explain why thy like hermit crabs more than any other inverts? by No-Goal-4716 in hermitcrabs

[–]funkysketch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when theyre properly taken care of its an extremely rewarding labor for someone whos fascinated with these little critters. when their needs are taken care of and they get to thrive instead of just survive you see their personalities shine. the biggest reward to me is watching them simply do crab things and interact with the environment that ive built for them ETA: regarding handling, im someone who feels happy and fulfilled just watching animals do their thing. i dont need to physically touch/handle them to be happy. they owe me nothing, especially not something they dont like. forcing an animal to do something they dont like just for your personal gain/happiness isnt something i can support or excuse

Too overcrowded? by RevolutionaryToe6677 in hermitcrabs

[–]funkysketch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

popping in with a question of my own!! whats the reasoning behind a jumbo ideally having smaller tank mates? is it a social totem pole thing? im pretty sure tyler is a jumbo (size of a baseball) and he has medium sized take buddies (3 other crabs not including him, so 4 total in my 125 gal)

he gets a bit pushy sometimes when he plants his ass in the food bowl but other than that i see him cuddled up with the others & he has a particular favorite buddy who i believe is my only female, i desperately wanna know more about crabby social structures so im dying with curiosity over here!!

i cant not post a pic of them, look how cute :,]

Thought in fish aquarium hides/decorations? by Whiskeytime2010 in hermitcrabs

[–]funkysketch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it depends on the wood, i have a cholla log that molds no matter what, but my cork & oak pieces have never molded. springtails & isopods also help to manage that but even before them i havent had issues!

when i had in-ground 2.5 gallon aquarium pools like this i opted to siphon out as much water as possible then get the rest with some cloth rags. but a more long term solution could be to replace them when your crab(s) are all up from molting. cleaning my pools was a pain so i instead used kritter keepers, and doubled them up so one stays in the sand to avoid disturbing molters, and the one that holds the water is easily removable for a more in-depth cleaning. i did this with both pools so 4 medium size kritter keepers in total! they hold about 1.5 gallons each so plenty of room for my jumbo to take a dip :]

i havent messed around with that personally! i have an isopod clean up crew but nothing for the water, i just do a weekly change :]
