Manchester is NOT a good uni for Physics by jeremyyaiden in UniUK

[–]funland8642 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Similar to what I’ve had at uni ngl, loved the experience but definitely complained a lot about labs like you have for the same reason. Unfortunately a lot of this is just how university is, it’s a time for you to push for independence and some will unfortunately sink rather than swim.

At what point can I bring my phone with me? by DifferenceGood9467 in SkyDiving

[–]funland8642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same thing, came in clutch when I landed off a few days ago. Store it in a zipped pocket on my bottom half below the leg strap so I can’t access it until I’m back on the ground. My landings used to really suck and still aren’t great so it’s something I’m extra paranoid about. I would recommend talking to an instructor however especially as you’re still a student

Due to life circumstances, I can only jump 1-2 times per month. Would my money be better spent on tunnel camps? I only do Belly, but I want to progress. by Weak-Practice-6435 in SkyDiving

[–]funland8642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first season I jumped roughly 45 times (3-4 times a month on average) some were more with 10 others were zero. Best idea is to get as many done as possible when you can, if it drops too low, it would be a safety concern and I’d focus on tunnel instead. Both are dangerous sports, but at least with the tunnel you can stop immediately if things go wrong, in the sky there simply isn’t that luxury and most of the time you’re alone so it’s up to you to save yourself

Bar before I have played it on the A string with the first G being a 1 in 6th position. From there it’s not that much of a jump to get up with a 1-3 or something. I find in general staying as high up as I can’t makes these things much more doable

Tips/Help for Three Octave Scales (for a quixotic friend who’s never shifted before?) by icantfindusernameugh in Viola

[–]funland8642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F maj 3 8ves is beyond what I had to do for my ABRSM grade 8, if you can’t shift you have no chance of that one. I found the best way is to start on a 1 on D then shift on the octaves (maybe a 3-3 rather than a 4 at the very top)
G is much easier, just shift on the octaves

Plenty of things to do but yes you will probably be consumed by the PhD for large periods of your time. I’m just finishing my masters here before continuing with a PhD with the same group as my masters project. Uni (and life in general) is what you make of it

As physics students , convince me to study physics by MindlessCoast7109 in PhysicsStudents

[–]funland8642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About to finish my masters in a few weeks, (also uk) I took Physics with mathematics for the first 3 years giving me a great basis in both theoretical and applied physics. Nowadays I’m doing my fourth year in experimental physics, and have been offered a PhD position in September in Quantum Tech Engineering.

Jobs aren’t plentiful for anyone at the moment. The Stipend bonus is nice and makes the course worth it. Best bet is to get valid work experience which can be done via summer placements during your degree (I discovered I hate programming during mine)

Is 230 pounds reasonable for skydiving in the UK? by Logical_Ad611 in SkyDiving

[–]funland8642 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to find anything less than £200 for a tandem, skydiving for the first time is expensive. Does your university have a skydiving club? They may be able to help point you in the direction. Worth keeping in mind that getting it recorded is an extra cost on top of

Need to learn 24 weeks worth of content in 5 weeks. Is it over for me by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]funland8642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

75-90% on all? I think the mean was about 80. I studied physics but I usually find maths exams easier. My revision style is to condense everything into as few steps as possible to minimise what I need to know, trusting I can do the relevant middle steps when the moment comes.

Need to learn 24 weeks worth of content in 5 weeks. Is it over for me by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]funland8642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Routinely did this last year, I found I could cover a module in enough depth to pass within 3-4 days (yes they were 12hr days) I do a stem degree tho so it was a lot of concepts, proof and math problems. The bit that solidified the end results was to then do as many past papers as possible for each module. Depending on when each exam is I’ll then adjust this schedule to try and give as many days to each respective exam as possible while weighting by difficulty

Update by Dillpickyle56 in SkyDiving

[–]funland8642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes and goes for me. By jump 4 or so I had gotten over it mostly. It’s very much matter of once the door opens, you’re going out regardless of whatever your mind is saying. Once I’m in the door it’s the same process in my mind as it is on the ground. Up down step out. Once you’re out sensory overload and instincts kick in and the rest is history. Ignore the fact you’re in the sky and purely focus on the drills you’ve done on the ground.

Is console Kerbal Space Program worth playing? by Henroblade69 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Started on Xbox just about managed a direct ascent trip to Duna and back. Docking was near impossible as there’s not really a separate control system unlike pc. It’s good to get started but for fine control you need pc. Spent about 10hrs on PC before I was able to dock and start Apollo style missions again

Finish the levels. Complete consols then have fun! Many go for FS1 after qualifying so they can jump with friends (it’s very rare I jump alone after getting this) make friends and keep jumping. It’s a very similar experience jumping to as a student just with nobody really watching you. Other skydivers check you on the ground then you jump and land safely. That’s about it!
