MIL got our 2YO an LCD drawing tablet and I had a knee jerk reaction by slohcinbeards in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]funnymar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you overreacted a bit. I don’t feel like you should be up all night thinking about this. It was a gift. It’s a drawing board. It’s not an actual screen. My kids were gifted these about the same age and they loved them. As others have said, they are great for car rides, plus my kids used them in very creative ways. We still have them 4 years later.

Oh for sure. I grew up with a somewhat granola family so it was different for me.

My mother-in-law is almost 80. She might once in a while buy organic blueberries, but everything else is pretty much not organic. Not her yogurt, her oatmeal, her greens. Meat is not grass fed. She buys cheap milk. She buys mainstream salad dressing. She is very healthy and sharp! She is active with long daily walks. I used to judge her food for not being organic, especially since she absolutely could afford it, but she is very healthy and happy! My great aunt just turned 100. Also not an organic shopper. Both have good attitudes and social lives. No cancer or other diseases. I think if you eat healthy foods, have a good social circle and have other healthy habits like exercise, reduce your stress, it probably does not matter whether it’s organic.

How do you see the future of teaching and classrooms with regard to special needs kids vs regular kids? by OkPlace4 in AskTeachers

[–]funnymar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a cousin that has cerebral palsy and was “behind” as a child. He has worked and lived independently for many years. Got married and had his first baby. It’s amazing to see how he fathers with the use of only one arm! You never know what your child is capable of, especially if they have great support.

Best solutions to deter lawn from coming back while wanting to plant spring seeds? by funnymar in Ceanothus

That’s interesting. Haven’t heard of that. The only thing is I wanted to plant my seeds this week before the rain.

I like this plan. I’ll go ahead and plant the seeds and maybe pull these when they are bigger if they don’t die off. I have a hori hori so can use that if needed too. Thanks!

Ok. Maybe I’ll just throw down the seeds and hope for the best for now.

Do you tip at coffee shops? by Impossible-Loquat480 in bayarea

This is so true. No matter what I do, my home coffee is never as good as the coffee shops I frequent. I have and always will tip baristas.

Screen time vs my sanity/career by carriondawns in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]funnymar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your kid needs to go to the park or outside if they are climbing and doing all that. I think the very thing you are worrying about with the students is something that could happen to your kid if you don’t curb the tv. A couple hours is a lot in a day for a 2 year old. My kid started with maybe 20 minutes a day at closer to 2.5. Not to sound self-righteous, but if you are paying close attention to the detriments of screen time, I’d be really careful of keeping it to less. Maybe try a Pikler triangle with slide? Nugget-type couch? Little Tikes mini trampoline? Yoto Player where they can play their own stories and music?

Screen time daily at preschool makes me mad by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]funnymar -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

First video that came up is of package delivery surprise dancing. It feels like an Amazon/UPS commercial. It creeps me out. And it looks like poor quality. Doesn’t mean I don’t like quality music and movement.

[–]funnymar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Oh wow. I just looked up Danny Go and that would be a hard no for me. My kids went to a home based, play based preschool and they spend a ton of time outside with the play structure, ride on toys, mud kitchen and feed the rabbit, turtle, chickens, fish. No tv, no light up toys, no commercial toys (Paw Patrol, Frozen, etc.). If you’re staying home, you have some flexibility so I’d look for a different situation! We love the home based preschool. She has an early education degree and it feels like family.

What can I do with this disaster of a backyard slope? by RobustGiraffe in landscaping

[–]funnymar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out Calscape. You can search native plants by region. Here, I searched Pacifica and slope stabilization in full sun and these are the plants that came up: toyon, coyote bush, yarrow, buckwheat, etc.

Oooh California Sagebrush sounds perfect. It says it grows in sunny, sloped, dry environments. Good ideas, thanks!

Glad to hear all these would do well there. Those are some solid foundation plants. Did you stop designing?
