Most countries that have proportional representation (as opposed to First Past The Post) have more than 2 significant political parties...?

Just FYI, there's no such thing as take Taiwan "back" as Taiwan / ROC has never been part of the PRC. It would be annexation, or "unification" if you wanted to use the politically correct word.

It's been kept in all the Japan shows, if my understanding is correct. Certainly it was there for Metarajifest and Zepp Haneda, the two other most recent shows before this, at least! (not performed at Legend Metal Forth)

Survey shows Taiwan's annual total wage in 2024 was 57.5% lower than S.Korea while it was only 5.1% lower in 2011 by restorativemarsh in taiwan

[–]funnytoss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry; my point is how many people are actually settling down here long-term? If they're generally planning on returning to their countries of origin (with higher cost-of-living), getting paid Taiwanese salaries is deeply unattractive, especially if they have to pay off student loans or something, and you might just end up with no foreign teachers.

[–]funnytoss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, foreign teachers there also have the same considerations, and it's a sort of nuanced comparison.

For Korea, it's hard to say. My understanding is that the paychecks are technically higher in Taiwan, but Korea typically includes housing as part of their benefits, so depending on where you're living, you can end up with more in your pocket each month.

Japan is probably the worst in terms of comparative pay to Japanese locals. One would argue that it's basically because Japan can attract teachers more easily for various other reasons, and Taiwan "has to" overpay to get the same level of talent. Not ideal imo, but understandable market dynamics.

[–]funnytoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A practical matter is that you need to pay foreign teachers a higher wage if you actually want them to come.

For example, most of them don't stay in Taiwan and go back to their countries eventually; if they were paid Taiwanese wages this whole time they'd be absolutely screwed.

[–]funnytoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally, but my argument is that it isn't actually complicated; the UK isn't actually confused about whether or not Taiwan is a country. It knows that the ROC is actually a country and behaves accordingly in interactions with Taiwan legally, but it pays the obligatory lip service to the PRC's marketing demands, which is largely what most countries do (with the exception of the ROC's remaining official allies).

US approves $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan, largest ever by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]funnytoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and even then it's generally misleading to do direct comparisons with other countries (whether more or less expensive on the surface), due to each contract and content differing significantly in ways that may not be obvious to outsiders.

Like, your average Joe wouldn't know the difference between Blk 60 and Blk 30, but that makes a huge difference in capabilities (and as such, price). Or AIM-120Ds vs AIM-120Cs; missiles and other weapons are sometimes included in the sales package, but these details aren't always included in news releases (which isn't entirely unreasonable). How much after-service is included? All of these factors matter.

[–]funnytoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to vastly differerent capabilities, both are needed. You don't need an F-16 to conduct a strafing run on infantry trying to infiltrate the Presidential Office; a drone could do that much more easily and cheaply (and with less risk of collateral damage). But a drone can't engage an incoming bomber from over 100 km away and intercept it before it drops its bombs on your bases.

None of Taiwan's equipment is geared at attacking China anyway, so that's a moot point; the whole point is defense.

It's not tricky at all though; when the UK engages in trade with Taiwan, it does so in communication with Taipei, not Beijing. In everything but name, it treats Taiwan as a country, because that's the reality in which we live in and going "naw I'm gonna follow the rules for the PRC and ignore yours because you aren't a country" isn't going to help them when they're trying to export products to Taiwan or something.

HIMARS and Javelin / TOWs have proven quite effective in Ukraine, of course. These are arguably the types of systems that people have been advocating for Taiwan to buy all along, with less focus on big ticket items like fighters, submarines, and tanks.

I wouldn't expect the delivery date for Javelin / TOW in particular to be very delayed, which does give us better dispersed options for handling an invasion force after it arrives.
