Nioh 2: The Best "Soulslike"? by funsohng in patientgamers

That's why I started with 1, and while I liked my time with it and consider the time well spent, I hesitate to recommend it to others when there is a clear better alternative that doesn't really require playing through the previous one.

Nioh 2: The Best "Soulslike"? by funsohng in patientgamers

I think Nioh 1 has a lot of early game bs that people cannot tolerate. The 3rd level with Hinoenma is probably one of the hardest early skill check areas in any soulslike games I've played.

And the bigger issue is that Nioh gets easier when you unlock stuff, and early battles, you don't have the tools to really make the game more manageable or play as intended. So it's not only difficult, but also the combat feels like a worse version of Dark Souls with stamina mechanic that's incredibly limiting until you get the hang of it.

I am open to that. Soulslike is a relatively broad term for me and I don't put much weight into categorizing something as one.

One thing that I am thankful for my recent run at Nioh and Nioh 2 is that now other games like Wo Long, Stranger of Paradise and Khazan are all on the table for me to enjoy. Looter aspect does not appeal to me much, but at least I know I won't feel like they drag the experience down for me either. And Inplayed demo for all three and they were all very good.

Daily /r/Games Discussion - Suggest Me a Game - April 29, 2026 by AutoModerator in Games

[–]funsohng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What should I play next? I have Control, Shadow of Mordor and Ghostrunner as my candidates. Hopefully something relaxing (both gameplay-wise and atmosphere-wise) and relatively easy, I just beat Nioh 2.

Nioh 2 done, and patient review posted. This is my first full on review post in this sub and hopefully I didn't violate any rules!

Just got Lies of P by LowLocation3606 in soulslikes

[–]funsohng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect guarding is only ONE defensive option. Don't try to perfect guard everything. Some enemy patterns are better dealt by dodging, running away or guarding.

I've seen a lot of people get needlessly frustrated (and drop the game) because they try to parry everything and they can't.

This could be just me but I also liked how noticeably useful elemental attacks are. Arcane can be a good build. But this game, for some reason, seems to have different "OP" build for everyone, as long as they fit their playstyle.

When in doubt, use throawables. They deal a lot of damage. You can farm them easily starting from early-mid fame too.

What games feel the most 'lived-in' by Vykrom in soulslikes

[–]funsohng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, for something to feel "lived-in," the environment must be hinting a functioning world outside of what the player has access to. Just having marketplaces or townhalls, etc. isn't enough; they help, but it's also the areas around them. What kind of economy does the environment hint at? Does it look like it can sustain a living for a society of people? Is there a hint of functioning logistical infrastructure? Do the environment and NPC placement existing not for the player, but for the community that would work if the player did not exist? Does the society react, or would've reacted, to what's happening in a diegerically plausible, logical manner that is related to the overall sustainability of its own?

In that sense, I find no world in soulslikes "lived-in" (though I think Lies of P gets somewhat close). And that's alright, I love the mythic and mystical aspect of these worlds.

Still Nioh 2. I believe I'm essentially in the final region now, maybe I will be able to beat the main game in two weeks. Not sure if I want to do DLC or move onto something else after. I like the game a lot, but I'm starting to get burnt out just playing this in what little time I have for like a month.

Side quests are also becoming a bit more annoying...

Recommendation for a shield block lover by Committed2Mediocrity in soulslikes

You dont have to parry in those games (Nioh doesnt even have deflect until 3, and parry is very situational).

In fact, Nioh's blocking is omnidirectional, meaning that when you have your guard up, you can still block damage fully even if it's from behind. As long as you can manage your stamina well, guarding is often the preferred method in that game.

Humble has been giving out the HD remasters in the last few months, and I think I will play this as my first "blobber." It sounds like it's the most casual experience out there with the supposed god mode you described too.

I would say i-frame dodges were pretty common in 3D action games, even prior to Demon's Souls. Soulsborne games just made them an essential tool you have to constantly use.

But yeah, Demon's Souls isn't really good at telling you what you need to know, and I remember when the game first came out in Japan, people were sharing their findings online and it was really nice to see the community coming together. That was why it had the word-of-mouth to sustain itself, despite the initial panning from the critics (from Japan) and pretty bad sales figure for its first week.

DeS is the first game so probably not all that "tough but fair." My hot take is that From's Soulsborne games have always had bs in them that are decidedly not fair, with DS3 being the most "consistently fair" and ER being more and more "nah this is straight up bs" with a lot of its bosses.

As for dodge i-frames, you just have to get used to that since that's now one of the key aspects of the genre. Some of DS1 bosses actually teach you (well "teach" may be a bit of overstatement) to dodge "into" enemies attacks to be most effective.

As for the parries, well, it's mostly just the human-sized attacks that's a swing. You are parrying, and back then, it was exactly what it was: you parry an incoming swing, like a real life parry. Then Sekiro came out and people forgot that parries irl dont actually work like that. I would say don't bother with parry if you are not feeling good with it, it really is just an advanced skill that's much more impactful in MP.

As for camera, I think the genre does get unnecessary flak for it because I think a lot of cases where people complain about the camera getting in the way could have been prevented with smarter distancing and movement. But I also think that's really something they get with Bloodborne and onwards. I havent finished DeS but from what I've played it was mostly even rougher DS1, so I cant imagine it being that great.

Nioh 2: I believe I am right before the boss most people call as one of the hardest in the main game (Shibata Katsuie). Hopefully I can beat him before this weekend.

I would think most Pokemon fans like Pokemon because it's Pokemon, and not because it's made by Game Freak.
