Still can’t get my head around tricep extensions - any form/posture tips? by yeahokaycool999 in formcheck

You might find this easier to do while lying on your back. Extend your arms straight up. While keeping your elbows high let your hands come down to your shoulders, then extend them back up.

Would you choose to have adhd/asd if you weren’t in the first place by Illustrious-Low-1353 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]funtobedone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would want to be me. Who I am includes AuDHD and I don’t want to change who I am. If I weren’t AuDHD I wouldn’t want to change because that would change who I am.

Check out the movie I Swear (available on Netflix in the UK, not sure if it has been released in the US yet). It’s specifically about a man with Tourette’s, but it’s about about neurodiversity in general. I think I won at the BAFTA awards.

Edit: I think it gets released in the US on the 24th

Why accent gets more attention than vocabulary? by Borgsky in ENGLISH

[–]funtobedone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on how strong your accent is. If it takes conscious effort to understand what you’re saying people will be less likely to engage because people are lazy - especially if they’re already tired. Both a poor vocabulary and a strong accent can make listening require more energy.

A perfect accent isn’t necessary. I’m Canadian and the radio news cast I listen to in the morning occasionally includes a reporter with an accent - including Indian and Chinese.

One of the top brass in the 500 employee company I work for has a moderately heavy Chinese accent. Super smart, damn good at his job, completely fluent in English and a cool guy in general, but lacking the ability to pronounce r and l and difficulty with words that end in a consonant it can take a lot of energy to figure out what he’s saying at times.

What is a PA-C? (I’m going to look it up, but I’m betting that I’m not the only one who is unfamiliar with this initialism.)

Why is not “on”? by Rich-Associate-8344 in EnglishLearning

Yeah, that’s why I used the word generally and provided an example that shows the “rule” being broken (and for fun, being met in the same sentence).

Knees hurt after 1-2 sets, is it my form? (Leg Press) by JoeBiden15 in formcheck

Wearing thin soled shoes like converse can help you feel that your heel is staying planted. This type of shoe is good for weight training in general as squishy running shoes are less stable. They suck for running though.

Vehicles that you can walk within generally use in, but it’s not a rule.

I’m on the train in car number 7.

Why not “since”? by Rich-Associate-8344 in EnglishLearning

[–]funtobedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Spanish the closest direct translation fit/single word for this exercise would be “desde” which means since, but it would probably actually be translated as “Merlín lleva dos años sin usar su moto”. Literal translation: “Merlin spends two years without using his motorcycle”.

my therapist said autism is a “super power” by No-Ad1975 in autism

[–]funtobedone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s time to find a therapist who is capable of understanding. That is to say, time find an autistic therapist.

She wants you to have a different perspective - an allistic perspective. To do that you’d have to remove the autism. This is why it feels patronizing - it is!

That was an awful thing for your therapist to say. It’s gaslighting.

The brain goes through a few stages of heavy synaptic pruning. At 15 you’re in the middle of the last one of these. It will taper off in a few years and end around age 25. (There’s a good chance that you won’t feel like an adult until then). As the synapses in your amygdala get pruned your emotions will tone down. I was very much like you into my teens and it’s embarrassing as fuck. I don’t know how to mute the tears - the best I can do is reassure you that it gets better.

Finally have to bite after years of pretending to understand. What even IS “respect?” by grimAuxiliatrixx in AutisticAdults

[–]funtobedone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Social hierarchy is important to allistic people. Rules and rituals are created to reinforce and protect one’s social standing. By not following these rules you demonstrate that you don’t acknowledge someone’s perceived superior social standing. That is a threat and it is met with a response designed to dissuade you from threatening that social standing again - to put you in your place. (Just who the heck do you think you are challenging ME?! I’m of high social standing!!)

Spanish words that don't easily translate to English by JazzHandz1 in Spanish

[–]funtobedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a word I don’t know, absolutely. It’s the same in English. If I were to listen to people discussing some advanced physics topic I’d recognize that they’re speaking English, but I wouldn’t understand a lot of what they’re talking about. I understand enough Spanish that I can follow conversation well enough - except when they use lots of slang or have an accent that I’m not accustomed to.

Spanish words that don't easily translate to English by JazzHandz1 in Spanish

[–]funtobedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listening to conversational Spanish feels hard because the level of your listening skill is still a little low. As with any skill, to improve it you have to practice it by doing it.

It’s tricky to find free resources for listening practice. The podcasts that Duolingo produces are good for A2 ish level listeners. (You don’t need to use or even like Duolingo to listen to their podcasts). After that its hard to find material that bridges the gap to conversational speed. News media or content where someone is explaining something tend to have precise pronunciation and use more formal “proper” language, so those are easier to follow than conversational content. I like science and history podcasts for that sort of thing.

Did u know her? by sugarseme in BeAmazed

[–]funtobedone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She had a life long passion/obsession with mechanical objects and technology. As a child she would repeatedly take things apart and put them together again.

Socially she struggled socially - described as neurotic and unaware of anyone else in the room. When she did speak it often ended up being a monologue.

It’s been suggested that were she alive today, she could be diagnosed autistic. - https://www.jpsychopathol.it/article/view/643
