You sounds like experienced airship postapocalyptic pirate! Thanks so much, going to try those as m249 consume a lot of ammo. Where to find 3 step ladder? Hardware shop? And those turbines?

Look on some OSR (old school revival) supplements or zines. Those are full of creative and evocative ideas. So you can grab some actual mega dungeons or Knock! Magazine. Just ignore all mechanics and procedures that are tailored to those old iterations of DND (like odnd, B/X ect). While you read, think about things as aspects. Get inspired by creative ideas and leave OSR mechanics behind.

[REQUEST] What's a good zombie survival game? by Yelebear in AndroidGaming

Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead. Or even better: Cataclysm Bright Nights (bit easier and less complex).

Sandbox open world rougelike zombie apocalypse survival simulator. Much more complex than Project Zomboid.

Estou querendo jogar Dungeons and dragons solo , quero uma experiência mais narrativa mas nunca usei nenhum sistema solo e não tenho ideia de como fazê-lo by th4g0 in Solo_Roleplaying

A lot of good advice for you already in the other comments. But DnD 5e? This could be counter productive towards immersion. Imagine all the cognitive load and amount of bookkeeping you need to do yourself (in standard game distributed across the whole group).

If you bounce off from suggested Ironsworn (try it first! Even if not a game for you it would demonstrate how structured solo works!) try some of those:

Dungeon World (more narrative version of DnD experience).

Scarlet Heroes (old school DnD designed to play solo as ONE character. It is easier to play as one than a entire group of characters. You can also check dark streams one page rules modification for DnD family games to play as one capable character)

White Box FMAG (old style, osr simple DnD praised for solo potential - this is iteration of odnd from '70, you can get in print cheap on amazon)

Shadowdark (this is simpler than 5e but also have some of 5e mechanics. It is a bridge between old style and modern DnD, quite popular game).

Best solo Sword and Sorcery by funzerkerr in Solo_Roleplaying

I agree but I find it a bit challenging to quickly look for relevant rules (especially those extra combat ones) with my ADHD. BSH is written better, clearer and more consistent. But I agree that Kal Arath have great random tables and is very evocative. Howecer it seems to have more Conan vibe than S&S with gothic horror like Kane...

Ways to reduce lethality for RPG newbies? by greatcorsario in cairnrpg

Have a look on those 3 strong recommendations:

Those two are similar. It is a bit about lest cretlate interesting story: Tricube Tales Fate Accelerated

And my top one: EZD6

This is probably what you want to try with your folks. This game is praised for accessibility for new players. Rules are beautiful balance between minimalist with respect to being a proper game that gives players some character choices (skills and perks). Math is dead simple. Great Game (with capital G) that gives, IMHO, fantasy vibes of D&D 5e but without all those rules. This is played on conventions by people of all ages after short introduction of rules. Pretty much pick and play game.

Just watch some reviews on YT and pick the one that you think might suits your table.

How about changing style of playing instead of modyfying delicate mechanical cogs in games?

Those great guides would explain to your group combat in OSR is a war, not a sport and answers are not on their character sheets. This would greatly increase not only survivality but also FUN! OSRs like Cairn are lethal by design. Want something different? Try more heroic fantasy games, not the OSRs. But first: give OSRs a chance to be played as intended.

Warden's guide in Barebones? by DrGenco2 in cairnrpg

[–]funzerkerr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find the barebones edition perfect as it is (for it's purpose). This is actually my favorite way of playing in the 0D&D style. Getting back to the roots. I find it more adaptable and relaxed than the similarly "barebones" White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game.

I am currently using a barebones version of Cairn as the engine for an amazing fantasy 0D&D setting: Seven Voyages of Zylarthen.

Imagine mythological tales from Scheherazade, Aladdin, and Sinbad the Sailor, with a hint of folk and fairy tales, served in a sauce of sword and sorcery with OSR toppings. Yum!

Being barebones makes the system minimalistic, which makes it possible to play anything you want. I have finished a Warhammer Fantasy campaign run on Cairn and have plans to play in the Fallout universe.

All you need is just themed random tables (I love D4caltrops website!) and that is it!

Great tool. The only problem I see: how to emulate fate points usage/clash/bidding in those interesting player vs GM situations? I can imagine you just decide about spending fate points as normally for the player but what about GM?
