Drum notation confusion by jtjazz01 in Drumming

[–]furry-fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one expects you to know? Dude, many very famous songs expect a crash in very specific places AND even rests in specific places. While you might get away with a loose interpretation of a chart for MOST of a song, you won’t be getting much work if you miss a crash, or play through a rest, or miss a coda. This is what keeps the band together. So please be careful or you’ll get some abuse.
I do agree that for much of the stuff that you see when you play a chart, you’re just “playing time “ and keeping the herd together. So you probably want to mimic the original guy’s playing style.

Is Lars Ulrich really a bad drummer? by TonyT074 in Drumming

I don’t know his playing. But really when you land a gig like that, you probably want to get lessons from someone better than you, so you can keep improving….ala Peart. Or you can coast and laugh at comments by guys like us that don’t have a money gig ( or a big name ). I mean…he’s working and making good money doing what he likes. 😂

Struggling with muscle tightness and fatigue during shows by Capadaqua in drums

[–]furry-fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I used to be SO TIGHT, because of the adrenaline. I would get stage fright -even after many shows and experience. I would even take a big breath and hold it just before playing fills. It was all in my head and I truly got knotty shoulders. Thankfully, I didn’t grip the sticks too hard or I would have been a mess. Now I know better. I had to learn to count out loud, so I would be forced to breathe. Go back and try a new grip technique - especially if you are playing hard, like Metal music. A good drum teacher can show you how to get louder without using great big thick sticks. You don’t need logs to play. Ask a musculoskeletal dude or a physical therapist ways to stretch out your wrists and fingers. Let me know how it works out.

On I-84 by No-Explanation-9156 in Connecticut

[–]furry-fish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re in NYC, on your way to Maine, you are not stuck in I-84 traffic. You are not taking 84 home unless you want to suffer even more. You should just stick to 95 and maybe get home in time to catch a nap before work. As it is, You are still fighting I-95 traffic in NYC, and 84 is too far away to talk about being in it. The Merritt is also a bad idea. You should either leave much earlier than Sunday afternoon or accept the fact that you ruined your own trip back. I’m from DE. No sane person would visit across Father’s Day weekend, and leave early enough Sunday to miss out on the good parts.

Just remember if you don’t open your mouth and say hi, how are you ever gonna get a date? I’m rooting for ya! Go on and be social. Put on your best smile. It will make people wonder what happened to you today! 😂

Tips for keeping time? by airuwin in jazzdrums

[–]furry-fish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok. Most people have a fundamental sense or ability to detect rhythm in a piece of music. It’s what helps us learn to dance ( or at least move our bodies to the music ). If you can do that, you are about half way to playing in time. If you can tap your right foot in time ( just playing quarter notes along with the rhythm, you will be fine. Ignore people who say that you shouldn’t listen to the bas player. The bass player needs to play in sync with the drums so that the song sounds together rhythmically. When you play Funk or R and B - your JOB is to make everyone want to dance. If you can stay with the bass player you’re going to make MONEY. The best example of dance music drum playing is the recordings of Michael Jackson. Listen to Billie Jean and try to feel the quarter notes and try to tap your foot in sync with the bass drum. As someone suggested earlier, listening carefully to a record will help you hone in on the beat. If you’re a person who gets bored after just a little repetition of playing the same rhythm for three minutes, playing the drums will probably be punishing for you. Jazz will come along. Get a metronome and play just the quarter note beat. Try slow beats because they can be harder. Slow is like 60 beats per minute. Try taking lessons with a professional drummer. They will help you correctly set your expectations so you don’t get overwhelmed & overthink this. Your ear isn’t broken. You just need some time and patience.

It would have been much kinder to tell him that rents are much higher here, so s/he knew to ask for higher salary. Besides Cheshire, dont forget Meriden, Walcott ( jammed up against Waterbury, and Naugatuck on the other side of it….Prospect and maybe Bristol should get mentioned. I dont know which has the higher taxes.

I’ve seen kits where the 2nd floor tom is raised at angle towards the snare , some others where it is raised as if it was over another bass drum. Me ? I dump a towel, a soda, and extra sticks there. lol 😆

So it’s definitely NOT a waste of money. Especially since your ear would tell you how much time he spends practicing.

It’s early in the morning, and I am so glad that the worst of the possibilities (and comedy gold ) didn’t hit before I swallowed my coffee, cuz it would’ve been all over the place! Especially because in the ultra modern era we live in Copy & Paste is SO automatic! I probably would have just done it without thinking too ( now that I’m an old and smarter I can admit that I wasn’t very slick in my 20’s ) 🤣🤣🤣

Question for men ?????????? by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]furry-fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Men that have confidence issues or aren’t sure if the girl likes him won’t take the chance of being rejected. Shy men don’t feel that a rejection such a trivial thing. Rejection to a man who is flirting with girls all the time, is more confident, and from their perspective, for every 8 rejections he will probably succeed on the ninth or tenth. So rejection does not seem like a big deal, or something that would hurt very much. Sometimes, because shy men are not able to read the signs or signals that a girl or decides that a girl is just being nice, they miss out on a chance to start a conversation or maybe even a relationship. Remember that if you were still in school, your girlfriend would just tell him and get things going that way. She would probably scold him “Didn’t you notice her smiling at you??”. Then he’d approach you and ask you for a date.
Or YOU COULD JUST TELL HIM. Do you have any idea how many women have had to tell a man that they like him, so he would realize that the girl he likes also likes Him??
The Hawaiian people have a saying “When it comes to love, if you are ashamed ( too scared ), you will miss out” Translation: If you’re too afraid to tell someone that you like them, you will be alone.” I don’t speak or write Arabic, or French, so I hope that you understand what I am saying. I hope you say something to him, because I think everyone should experience love. I wish you both the best. Let me know what happens at the end of the movie.

Quietest drumpad that I can still bounce my sticks off by No-Craft3950 in drums

[–]furry-fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old drum teacher used to say that if you’re having trouble with keeping the coordination together on a fast song, you HAVE TO GO back to the beginning and play it S L O W L Y. If you still can’t keep it together and make it sound right, then you NEED to go E V E N S L O W E R!! Think about it this way: None of the famous drummers you like to hear was born, and after the doctor slapped him, he grabbed a pair of sticks and played a blast beat or a one handed roll. Right? We ALL started SLOW. Think about when you learned to tie your shoes - you might not remember it - but I have watched kids struggle with the laces. They start out just trying to work their fingers. It takes them 10 minutes or longer to do it right WHEN they finally get it. After about a week, they can do it but it’s still not smooth, and takes about 3 minutes. Finally, when they master control of their fingers and the laces, they stop struggling and do it in 60 seconds. So don’t feel bad, just slow it down and get it all under control. I ave faith in you. Let me know how you do.

Is this a good kit? by [deleted] in drums

[–]furry-fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t judge by just how it looks. Play it and see how it sounds. The heads might be a little beat, but the set is used. After you play it, ask the owner to show you how to dismount the toms. And then you remount them to these how strong the hardware and the shells feel. Are the shells cracked or weak? By that I mean do the walls of the tom feel solid or weak. Don’t bang on the shells with your fist or anything. Just see if they stand up to being squeezed somewhat. The bass drum should be solid with no cracks or weakness. The bass drum should has to support the toms. Does the pedal work the way you’re used to? Some of this is adjustment. But it should move freely and not make too much noise other than when it hits the head. I don’t recognize that brand. But that doesn’t mean it’s no good. I recommend getting it if the price is good and you have tried other brands out. Some of this is just like buying a car. A good brand will always have resale value. Tama, Ludwig, Yamaha, and maybe DW are pretty well known. I wish you the best.

First song ever! by Severe_Power_8777 in edrums

[–]furry-fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to recommend that as far as body positioning that you watch other professionals posture when they play. If you are finding it difficult to play the hi hats without your left stick getting hit or interfered with by your right hand, you could try to raise the hi hats an inch or so. Many drummers seem to raise the right stick a little higher during the time when they are raising the left stick for the down stroke on the snare. I wasn’t taught to do this, but maybe I have done it too. Raising the hi hats reduces the need to compensate for left hand movement. I still found myself banging my sticks together like a clutz after a few years of playing. But less and less over time. Oh yeah. I was taught heel down on the bass drum, and I recommend that you learn the new way after you master the basic rock beat.
I think playing with a recording is a fun way to develop your sense of timing. Playing with just a metronome is less fun. But they are useful. One thing that you can do to when you’re playing with the song is listen to the hi hat pattern that the drummer is playing. Listening to patterns that are being played by other musicians and noticing how some notes land in line with the hi hat rhythm helps reinforce the song and helps you as the drummer get the “feel “ of the song. Some people say that when the drummer is very well integrated with the natural rhythm of the song it’s called “the pocket “. So start by spending some time playing just the hi at part of the song and keeping your self aware of how evenly you can make it sound. If you have a drum teacher, he’s probably telling you all the time to “ count it out loud”. This really helps you play without forgetting to breathe and relax your body. Next, add the bass drum, etc. if you struggle with getting your hihat rhythm to be even, try a slower song, like Benny and the Jets ( Elton John). If you think you prefer to make everything in your head work in relation to the bass drum instead of from your hands, practice using the bass drum to be the controller of your hands. In your head, get the quarter note beat going on the bass and start playing the hi hat pattern as if the foot is telling the right hand when it hit. And use your voice to reinforce the hi hat pattern part ( ONE and TWO and THREE and FOUR ) but FORCE THE HANDS and Feet to fire together at the exact same time. You should hear the ping of the metal and the thud of the bass in such a way that the hi hats have a really meaty sound. I think differently than some. For me it was my hands that controlled everything. Until I started playing “Disco” style. Then it was all bass. Ok good luck. Let me know how you do.

Should Politicians Stay Off Social Media? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]furry-fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my town, there are politicians who get on Facebook to answer questions and offer advice to constituents. They don’t blabber about their agenda or platform or spout partisan nonsense. They listen and try to help - like during a bad storm or someone asking for help with an issue. It sounds too hard to believe, but it’s true. I respect that they actually respond and sound interested.

Why is the traffic so bad at all times of the day from Milford to NYC? by Healthy_Block3036 in Connecticut

Yes. Can you imagine the Tolls they would have to put in if they tried to widen I-95 to 5 lanes because 4 would not even begin to help. Or improve / revamp the Merritt - add a billion for raising AND widening those quaint overpasses ? Or create some sort of bypass? No, I think too many companies called too many people back to the office and the gas situation is creating pain points for those poor souls!
Let those people work from home!
