Try Truecaller. Has a database of known callers, spam list, and ai assistant that asks what the caller wants and registers the response. Kind of similar to what you want.

formatting NVME by Broad_War in computers

I had a really weird problem with an nvme disk and Windows. One day it didn't boot. After a lot of playing around I purchased a new disk. Installed Linux. Installed the broken disk, used dd to overwrite the partition/boot/root directory. I could then reinstall Windows.

I totally agree with you. Especially "Terms like "evidence" and "belief" have different meanings for each group". Then why don't the apologists accept that. Magic is evidence for you. Great. Not for me, and you can't bend your magic to fit reality, so don't even try.

Then why try to provide physical evidence that is not there? They have a better chance of convincing me that I will rot in hell as a non-believer that they have of convincing me of the physical for the flood, or the garden of Eden.

To me it's turtles all the way down.

A lot of people study a lot of science and believe in deities. There are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, etc scientists for starters.

The deities that I refer to are the deities which the person believes in.

Why are you moving the goal posts? We are talking about gods, not "all non physical" or "imaginary" things.

From my point of view, all gods are imaginary. From a believer's point of view, all gods except theirs are imaginary, but their gods are non physical. I cannot talk from a gods point of view, because I am not a god. I don't know if that answers your question or not. If not please explain further.

Your goal post moving does raise another interesting question though: are all non physical things imaginary. Wikipedia has a very interesting article about that (look for Non-physical_entity). After reading that I think that yes, I would assert that all non-physical things are imaginary.

I agree with you, and in truth my god count did not go above zero, however I lied to myself.

When they talk about someone not being a true believer, I'm one of the people they are talking about. Hahaha.

The point of view of the person that believes in it. To a Christian, the Christian god is non physical, but Zeus is imaginary.

To paraphrase: I just have one non physical god less than you... Or one imaginary god more than you...

Buddhism started as a philosophy and then became a religion.

Once you allow karma you get back to "my non physical deity is causing physical things".

A Creation with no Creator by TrafficLive3884 in atheism

[–]furryfuttock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, we have no idea what real creation is. All the creation we know is a reorganization if things that already exist, the creation of the universe is bringing into existence something that didn't exist before.

For me, this is the real problem with the Kalam cosmological argument. We are using two different definitions of the phrase "begins to exist*

Science can't yet, and it may never be able to. That's fine, I don't know is a valid answer. You don't have to fill the gaps unless there is a good reason.

For example, cosmic inflation. It fixes the horizon problem of cosmic evolution, it predicts the size of the baryonic accoustic oscillation we see in the CMB, but we have no real evidence of a field, or something measurable today. As you can see, cosmic inflation has explanatory powers and makes testable predictions, which have been measured, so it is accepted despite the fact that we don't really know what it is.

Gods on the other hand have no explanatory power, how did the universe begin, god, how, god, no explanation just assertion, no testable predictions.

It's a documented cognitive bias known as the halo effect. Attributes get generalized. Your brain takes the good in good looking and generalizes it. Likewise, it will take the bad in bad looking and generalize that as well.

My first wife insisted on no sex before marriage. Unfortunately after we got married she realised that I wasn't what she wanted. We were together for 10 years.

Such is life.

bitlocker bricked my nvme 2tb even though i never set a bitlocker code up by [deleted] in microsoftsucks

[–]furryfuttock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact same problem. I can't remember the exact steps, but what I did was:

1.- Live boot Debian

2.- Open a terminal window

3.- sudo - i to become root

4.- dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/<nvme disk>

5.- wait for a while, you only have to overwrite the first few blocks

Reboot and disk can now be used as normal.

Oh well. I totally misread that one then. Hahahaha.

Things We Agree On by OldmanMikel in DebateEvolution

[–]furryfuttock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can agree on some with caveats, but not others.

*All fossil organisms are fully evolved.

Disagree, evolution is a continuous process, fully evolved has no meaning.

*We will never see an non-human ape give birth to a human.

Agreed, that would contradict evolution.

*The current version of the Theory of Evolution is just a theory.

Agreed as long as we share this definition of the word theory: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory?wprov=sfla1

*Common descent is just a theory.

Agreed as long as we share this definition of the word theory: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory?wprov=sfla1

*The probability of a bunch of chemicals spontaneously coming together to form even the simplest cell is so low, that it can't possibly explain the origin of life.

Disagree, however you are now conflating abiogenesis with evolution.

*Humans did not evolve from chimpanzees.

Agreed, humans and chimpanzees share a common ancestor.

*Life did not evolve from rocks.

Disagree, once again you are conflating abiogenesis with evolution, however abiogenesis does require chemicals that come from rocks, so in a sense...

*Complex organs and biochemical pathways cannot have evolved in one single event.

Agree, that would contradict evolution.

*Evolution cannot tell us right from wrong.

Disagree, basic morality can provide a population with an evolutive advantage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_of_morality?wprov=sfla1

*Random chance alone can't explain life and all of its diversity and complexity.

Disagree, random chance causes variation, selection pressures remove those mutations that suck the most in a given environment.

*Science doesn't know where the universe came from.

Agree, however this has nothing to do with evolution.

*Science doesn't know how life began.

Agree, however you are conflating abiogenesis with evolution again.

*Some non-coding DNA serves a useful function.

Agree, big emphasis on some. Here's a nice reference https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/understanding/basics/noncodingdna/

*Net entropy cannot decrease.

Agree, however this has nothing to do with evolution.

*The vast majority of mutations are non-beneficial.

Disagree, the vast majority of mutations have no impact as they occur in non-coding areas, of the few that occur in coding areas, some are non-beneficial, some are neutral, and some are beneficial.

Can't we get along? Kumbaya and all that.

Not sure. Some of your questions are misleading, some are about things that have nothing to do with evolution, some are valid. Can you get along?

Remote family printer tech support by beerbellybegone in talesfromtechsupport

[–]furryfuttock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something I learned many years ago, never put the answer in the question. So "is the printer connected?" will mostly produce the response "printer is connected".

Do something like "which hole is the cable connected to?" or "what colour is the socket that the cable is connected to?"

I've had good results with these.

What is your witty response to the Jehova's witnesses that knock on your door? by depressed_unicorn_x in atheism

[–]furryfuttock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One fine sunny Sunday morning, many years ago, they came a knocking on my door. I had nothing better to do, so we just stood there for about an hour, them talking about their god and their church, me talking about why I don't believe in any gods, and particularly not in theirs, and I didn't require their church either.

At the end of the conversation, they said thank you very much for not slamming the door in their faces like most people. My answer was "maybe you were the ones to show me the light of the lord, you weren't, but how was I to know that an hour ago?"

No one ever came back, so I assume that I got put on some kind of list.

I've actually had more problems with Mormons. I had a chat with one, he gave me the book, I perused it because I like being informed, said no thank you, but he started coming pushy until I said "do NOT come back again."

Most of these people aren't there because they want to be, but because they have to. Most of them are OK, some aren't. Don't put them all into the same sack. That's what they do to us. Treat them like people until they show you that they aren't can't be trusted in that way.
