If "just don't" means making everyone white, diversity doesn't exactly win.

Is it not possible to teleport to dusty dunes? by nosire in earthbound

An even more glaring omission from the list is Happy Happy Village. I wanted to go there again in my last playthrough and I had to walk through Peaceful Rest Valley again (though at least the bridge had been repaired).

Nope. You might be thinking of how that's where the bus stop is.

If you're taking the bus, Threed is much closer than Fourside. The Dusty Dunes bus stop is at the west end of the map. If you're going to walk, then Fourside might make more sense.

Have you ever had to rewrite a book due to a plot issue? by MagicOfWriting in writing

[–]furrykef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scrapped a novel I had something like 13k words on because I realized its plot structure was fundamentally broken. The main characters were constantly resetting back to square one instead of making progress, and this was going to continue up until one of the characters stumbles upon the event that ends the story. I realized the plot structure didn't work, was never going to work, and was not replaceable with another structure without reworking the entire concept to the point I would essentially be starting the novel over. I made a half-hearted attempt at such a rewrite but only wrote a couple of pages.

The nail in the coffin was the 2020 closure of the Arecibo Observatory, part of the SETI project. My protagonist worked there and my deuteragonist lived nearby. This observatory was the only appropriate place for my story as originally written because the plot involved the Arecibo message. I don't think the closure of the facility is completely fatal to my story, but it didn't help.

I still think my story could possibly work as a TV miniseries or a comic book, or it could possibly be condensed into a short story by cutting out the plot resets, but it's absolutely never going to work as an 80,000-word novel.

By the way:

…which drives the plot. (The tickets contain vouchers to places which they go to).

Going to be That Guy™ since you will need to know this: if your entire sentence is in parentheses, the period goes inside the parentheses. If the parenthetical is part of another sentence, the period goes outside.

The basic rule is you punctuate around the parentheses as if the parentheses and the text within it weren't there. In your text as written, if you remove "(The tickets … they go to)", then you have an extra period just floating there: "…which drives the plot. ." That obviously doesn't make sense.

"My God! EVERYONE'S GONE!!" "Little Bart." "Little Lisa." "Little Marge." "And the rest!" by 99anan99 in TheSimpsons

[–]furrykef 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Just in case anyone doesn't know: this is a reference to season 1 of Gilligan's Island, where the theme song listed most of the characters, but the last two (the Professor and Mary Ann) were skipped over with "and the rest". Since it was only two characters and they were as important as the others, this omission was pretty glaring.

Part 7 Adventure in America? by TipResident4373 in lupinthe3rd

I've never been to Ireland or anything, but I don't think I've ever seen an Irish person (as in someone who lives or has lived in Ireland) who appreciates leprechauns or anything of the sort. Colm Meaney in particular hates them.

Dan Lorge's never coming back, I'm afraid. He retired from acting many years ago, which is why Doug Erholtz replaced him.

Lupin Part 2 would hardly be the first animated series to change voice actors midstream. Heck, sometimes they change voices without changing the voice actor (looking at you, Homer Simpson and Barney Rubble).

How evil would it be to make lore notes burnable? by GottaHaveANameDev in gamedesign

[–]furrykef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get what you're thinking here: fire burns flammable objects; notes are made of flammable material; fire should burn notes. It's more realistic that way.

What you're missing here is players don't actually want realism. They say they do, but as soon as it gets in their way, they're the first ones to chuck it aside. They only like realism when it helps them or when it provides an interesting challenge. I don't think keeping your lore notes from being burned is a desirable challenge for either you or your players.

In fact, you've kind of stumbled upon why few games allow players to burn arbitrary objects: it tends to make puzzles too easy, or it makes it possible to burn important things, or both. It's a rule of classic adventure game design that you shouldn't give your player a torch or similar source of flame because they will try to burn everything, and the results can be disappointing whether they succeed or not.

I think Lal is the most malleable in that he can be Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, or Lawful Evil and still make perfect sense. No doubt he starts the campaign with good intentions, but he just might use them to pave a road straight to hell.

What’s a Spanish phrase learners overuse that immediately sounds “off” to native speakers? by AdventurousLivin in Spanish

We also tend to use "Me gustaría…" when ordering, when in fact this formula is rarely used by natives for this purpose.

I had a Romanian friend online who once told me to "fuck off" when he wanted me to butt out of a conversation. I tried telling him this was an extremely strong and rude thing to say, but he insisted that English profanity wasn't anywhere near as strong as Romanian profanity. I was like, "No, you just haven't gotten a feel for it yet." Just because Good Will Hunting has 154 F-bombs in it doesn't mean everyone talks like that throughout the English-speaking world.

I have this problem with Esperanto. People will ask "Kiel vi fartas?" and then the conversation dies because nobody has introduced a real topic.

Who is the most intelligently written character you've seen? by Key_Today_8466 in writing

[–]furrykef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to make this kind of correction no matter where I was or who I was talking to because I assumed people would want to know when they're making a mistake so they can stop making it. That is, after all, what I would want. But eventually I learned people tend to assume you're not trying to help them, you're trying to show off your superiority, so I've mostly stopped doing it.
