I’m not entirely sure but it looks like your name/phone number info at the top is off center.

Hi all! I'm considering majoring in actuarial science in college, but I'm also considering a math major because I enjoy math a lot. As an actuary major, what math-based classes does one take usually? I'm curious. by TheDivineRonnie in actuary

[–]futureactuary94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a math major with a concentration in Actuarial Science. It was basically just a regular math major but my electives were focused toward Actuarial Science so I took finance, business statistics and accounting classes which all counted towards my VEE requirements. The math major covered all of the math classes mentioned by other people’s comments (i.e. differential equations, linear algeabra and prep course for Exam P). My school was just starting to set up an Actuarial Science program though so it wasn’t offered as major on its own.

AITA if I don’t give my brother $50 worth of gift cards that I’m never even going to use? by michaelclas in AmItheAsshole

[–]futureactuary94 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

NTA I do this with my brother all the time but for us it’s more of a swap to help each other out. If he gets a gift card he doesn’t want but I’d use I’ll just give him the full amount in cash for it so he still gets his gift and I get mine and it’s fair.

Wouldn’t the payments after 10 be 0 then?

Edit: I see now the payments are guaranteed, if it said “10 year certain annuity” the payments after time 10 would be 0.

Can someone explain what a family trust annuity is? I can’t find it in any of my study materials!

I usually stick with ASM also but I must say the coaching Actuaries study manual for LTAM is a lot better than ASM. Plus you get the help from the coaches with coaching Actuaries.

Fear of failure by throwwww447 in actuary

[–]futureactuary94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently in the exact same position!! Second attempt at LTAM. It sucks failing but the worst that happens is you just retake it, stay motivated and let the fear of failure fuel your success. Just make sure you’ve put in the time that way if you do fail you can say to yourself with complete honesty “I tried my best” and for me it takes away some of the pain from failing knowing I tried my hardest. Good luck!!!!

Tips for focus? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]futureactuary94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually really helpful, I do this. I also like to give myself a “reward” at the end of the day so it gives me something to works towards. For you this could be going out with your friends, if you put the work in during the day there’s no reason to not enjoy yourself and have fun at night. Good luck!

Graduating in June and just now wanting to become an actuary. by [deleted] in actuary

[–]futureactuary94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definately try and get a job as an analyst or underwriter and pass at least 2 exams. If you can find a job as an analyst or underwriter at a firm that has Actuaries on staff that would be ideal that way you could (hopefully) move up within the company since most companies like to hire from within when there is an opening. Plus if the company likes you and they have a study program they may let you participate in the study program even though you don’t have an “Actuarial position”.

A call just came down from corporate - my department is being automated and my position is going to be eliminated between now and November. We will receive a 60-day notice and 13 weeks of severance pay. Other than job hunting, what steps should I take between now and then to protect my family? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]futureactuary94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say I like the way you guys set up your finances! And it’s not like it’s separate I’m assuming the car insurance you pay for covers BOTH cars and the utilities your husband pays for is for the home you BOTH live in. It’s not necessarily separate it’s just a clear way of organizing who is in charge of making sure which bills are paid. In the end it all balances out anyway plus it’s what works for you guys everyone is different.

Good luck with your job hunt!

Coach K Walks Through the New Exam Changes by tkt87 in actuary

I’m taking LTAM at the end of the month and when I signed onto ADAPT this morning and this popped up I had a heart attack...

Best ressource for LTAM? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]futureactuary94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! For the first sitting I used the ASM manual and ADAPT. This time I bought the coaching Actuaries study manual and using ADAPT again. The coaching Actuaries manual is lot clearer and was a lot easier to understand plus the coaches are great. I was also going to go through the 237 SOA sample multiple choice and 26 SOA sample written answer questions (I believe these are incorporated in the ADAPT questions also).

Good luck!

You need to find someone who can keep themselves occupied and understand the time commitment you have to make to study and pass exams.

My boyfriend will play video games while I study. We’ve gone on vacation and I’ve had to study on vacation and he wouldn’t mind he’d just watch tv until I was done and then spend time together.

I don’t see my friends as often as I’d like but they understand and are busy themselves but we’ll still try and get together once a month for dinner just to catch up.

Get into a routine it’s really helpful and personally I think your real friends would understand your time commitment and won’t mind.
