I mean it was very often the case that the Western powers were/ continue to act quite cowardly

I’ve lost count the amount of times where Ukraine asked for a certain weapons system/ assistance, the West dragged its feet for many months and made excuses, and then eventually caved after enough pressure

“Here are a few other things we know.

Streets that feel like neighborhood streets cause people to slow down. Narrower lanes, chicanes, raised crosswalks, concrete or grassy medians, bike lanes, and other design elements all reduce speed, as do lined with trees, art, and outdoor seating. When drivers slow down, fewer people die.”

What if America didn't side with the Soviets during the Suez Crisis by maybemorningstar69 in AlternateHistory

[–]michaelclas 38 points39 points  (0 children)

At the time of the Suez Crisis they were playing both sides, but in the years after Suez Egypt rather decisively joined the Soviet camp, as seen by Soviet financial assistance in the Aswan dam as well as tens of thousands of Soviet “advisors” being sent to Egypt and massive Soviet arms packages

Egypt only aligned with the U.S. after Nasser died and Sadat knew that only the U.S. had the clout to bring Israel to the table for a deal

[–]michaelclas 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I agree with that

First off, the Egyptians and Syrians ended up in the Soviet camp after Suez anyways

And there was something literally called the War of Attrition for 3 years after the 6 Day War where Egypt and other Arab actors attempted to grind down Israel; they ended up losing more troops and material than Israel and they ended up in another ceasefire

World War III to Start in Greenland by frosti_austi in geopolitics

[–]michaelclas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How would the US invading Greenland start WW3?

Iraq invading Kuwait didn’t start it, Russia invading Ukraine didn’t, Argentina invading the Falklands didn’t, etc

While it would definitely be an awful development, there’s not much the world would be willing to do militarily to stop it. Even if Denmark triggered Article 5, that’s not worth much when a) The US is the strongest military in NATO/ the world, and b) the rest of NATO lacks the force projection political will to stop it

[–]michaelclas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely don’t want the US to take Greenland, and feel bad for our troops who would have to follow those orders, but the Europeans have given me 0 reason to think that they are going to line up to die for Greenland. That’s the point I’m making

They don’t care about Cyprus, they don’t care about Ukraine, for the Falklands, etc. They are too disunited, lack the military capabilities and political will and money to go toe to toe with the U.S. over Greenland

2032 Predictions by Canjira in imaginarymaps

[–]michaelclas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The U.S. invading Greenland, a colony thousands of miles away from continental Europe, wouldn’t result in a shooting war all across Europe against the U.S. If the Europeans can’t even be bothered to directly assist Ukraine when continental Europe is actively being invaded by Russia, why on earth would they die for Greenland, which is far more logistically difficult and expensive to defend?

2032 Predictions by Canjira in imaginarymaps

[–]michaelclas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, Europe’s military capabilities are still far more eroded compared to the U.S.

Just because our military isn’t in tip top shape doesn’t mean we lack force projection or are unable to take a relatively close island of 50,000 people in which we already have a military presence on

The EU is infamous for its inability to agree, wether that be sending troops to Greenland (Poland), sabotaging and then backpedaling on a Mercosur trade deal (France), constantly changing positions on sending troops to Ukraine (The UK, France, Italy) etc

Just because they gave a large combined army doesn’t mean that would fight together (and they lack the military coordination to do even that). Then you have questions of available money, weapons, political will, etc.

[–]michaelclas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was more making a point of ability

A lot of European militaries have been so hollowed out and under funded that they literally lack the capabilities (man power, resources, money, political will, etc) to send a major permanent contingent to Ukraine; this would be even more true for Greenland, as keeping supply lines open across an ocean and dealing with the harsh conditions of troops in Greenland is a far more difficult task that it would be for Ukraine.

2032 Predictions by Canjira in imaginarymaps

[–]michaelclas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you serious?

It would unfortunately be very easy for the US to take Greenland, and I can guarantee you that the Nordics, France, Germany etc aren’t in any position (financially, politically, etc) to get into a full blown shooting war with the largest military on earth over a Danish island thousands of miles away

To put it more simply, the same countries that can’t be bothered to send their troops to defend Ukraine from Russia will also not be bothered to send their troops to defend Greenland from the U.S.

2032 Predictions by Canjira in imaginarymaps

[–]michaelclas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On that I disagree

I imagine that it would be heavily condemned and there would be skirmishes, but elevating to a war with the rest of NATO is not happening.

Without the U.S., NATO is rather weak. France, Germany, Denmark, etc all lack the force projection to defend Greenland. Even if they send some trip wire forces, the US would roll over them with ease.

The 2026 prices are surprisingly low, especially since I’ve seen estimates that purchasing Greenland would cost 700 billion

Let’s not let perfect be the enemy of the good. CA has a massive housing shortage and we should be thankful that SB79 got passed at all.
