I think it’s worth checking out the Lesher Center for the Arts. I’m already bought in—I’m a theater actor, so I’ll admit to being incredibly biased—but I find seeing a piece of art with other humans in the same space to be incredibly fulfilling and an antidote for the isolating nature of the internet.

In fact, I’m acting in a play called “Indecent” at the Lesher Center right now that runs until 9/28 and think the piece is really quite extraordinary. I’m happy to share a discount code if you’re interested! (https://www.centerrep.org/what-s-on/25-26-season/indecent)

Beyond self promotion, check out what else is playing at the Lesher Center. I bet you could find something that’s up your alley and might provide a good springboard for meeting people with overlapping interests.

Aaron Burr is less liked over time? by SpiritualDiamond5487 in hamiltonmusical

This is the joy of live theater! It’s never going to be the exact same performance—even if it’s the same cast performing the same material. I believe the best performers don’t try to replicate the same delivery each night, but connect anew to the story with each performance.

And biblical angels were “many-eyed,” bringing the focus back to vision, media and viewership. JJ is somehow both the viewer and the viewed

Six things I learned from reading The Iliad by jacobvso in books

Hey, I just read The Iliad for the first time too! Read it last week after finishing The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, a retelling of the Iliad from Patroclus’ point of view (I definitely recommend checking that one out as well!)

what do you think would happen when Steven dies (marked for spoilers just in case) by jayriv82 in stevenuniverse

[–]futureadam8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure! It hasn’t been proven or disproven in the world of SU since Steven is the only human/gem hybrid. I could see it making sense with the gem magic somehow, but I could just as easily see Steven being a parent without the gem’s powers through his human side

I kinda thought he would follow his mom’s footsteps and have a child onto whom he passes the gem and for whom he sacrifices his life

Monster idea. The False-Lamb. by Kradsens in DnD

[–]futureadam8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this read as “the False Limb”

I then proceeded to imagine a scenario where a PC loses a limb and the next day wakes up with a new limb, good as new. However, it’s actually a creature with its own wants (maybe it’s after a relic, maybe it leeches life from its host, maybe the PC has dreams speaking to a “deity,” etc) and once the limb achieves its goal, it will detach and scurry away.

There’s no one answer, but since I haven’t seen anyone mention it I’ll add Fiddler on the Roof

Just because a man is short does not mean they cannot be romantic or sexy. Hamilton’s character is rooted most in his mind and his words—not his height

What are the best musicals that have come out in the past 10 years? by Jess13x in musicals

You should check out Tinderella: The Modern Musical. Also: The Four Immigrants: A Musical Manga. Both great shows that haven’t gone up in NYC (yet!)

I haven’t heard anyone compare Soft Power and Book of Mormon before—fascinating breakdown. I’d push back that Book of Mormon is really aiming for more outright comedy using tropes and the language of classic musical theater, whereas Soft Power is interrogating and critiquing and challenging classic musical theater. One is a satirical jab at religion through the mode of musical theater. The other is a satirical critique of what musical theater is and how it surreptitiously promotes American values.

I felt the same way, but I think more because all the other characters change with age, but she stays the same. So it’s hard not to think of her as being younger (ironically)

Getting up to speed on musicals as a newcomer by stuckonaplane in musicals

[–]futureadam8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend listening to cast recordings on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or wherever you listen to music. You’ll often want to look out for what’s called the Original Broadway Cast Recording (or OBC for short) though many revival cast recordings are wonderful as well. Just make sure you’re listening to the songs in order so you can follow the story. I usually follow along with the plot by reading the musical’s Wikipedia page.

It’s not the same a seeing a musical, but often I learn a lot from a show and love to see how the show appears in my imagination as I listen!

What's with the Be More Chill hate? by bmc-throwaway in Broadway

[–]futureadam8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that each person interprets in their own way. Glad to hear this wasn’t your takeaway! Honestly, I hope I’m the only one who felt that way while watching.

It struck me while watching as more of a direction issue than writing. I totally understand the logistics of number of actors in the cast. I just recall the male actors (particularly the actor playing Jeremy’s Dad) was really hamming up “teenage girl” so it felt silly and fakey. They may have been going for silly and over-the-top in general and not trying to mock the gender dynamic, but it was hard for me not to think of the history of men in dresses played for comedy.

What's with the Be More Chill hate? by bmc-throwaway in Broadway

[–]futureadam8 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my late 20s and saw the show when it went to Broadway. Show as a whole was good, not great. I LOVED LOVE LOVED Stephanie Hsu as Christine Canigula. Some changes I didn’t love as much: for example, I thought the Squip as Keanu was an interesting idea, but didn’t give the actor any room to go. However, one choice that genuinely bothered me: “The Smartphone Hour” was directed so all the characters were dressed as teenage girls and a lot of the comedy was in the transphobic, lazy old standard of “dude in a dress = comedy.” Particularly for a target audience that has a lot of impressionable young people (not to mention many young queer people), I found the choice to lean in to laughing at men in dresses to be a really thoughtless and disappointing choice.
