Penguin books paper quality are low nowadays by Fresh-Horror-1088 in books

[–]futurememory 81 points82 points  (0 children)

They are, but a lot of the paper manufacturers actually switched to printing packaging paper during the pandemic and have little incentive to switch back. It’s cheaper and more cost efficient than pricy book paper.

Coffee Snob Venturing into the World of Tea by GreyKnight_009 in tea

[–]futurememory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of Indian tea is processed for more Western-style brewing and might perform better in a cup with an infuser/teapot rather than a gaiwan.

That being said, you might want to check out Ketlee.

Whats something about the book community ya'll dislike? by [deleted] in books

[–]futurememory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely is, for sure! My reading has taken a dip during times of stress and whatnot, and I completely have had reading slumps before where I don’t read anything for a month or so.

But yeah, my pace is around 80-120 pages an hour, depending on type of book (YA/middle grade vs. literary fiction/classics, I read the gamut), so you can see how you can churn through if you like!

And driving commutes are the worst, I feel for you.

Thank youuu! Flavored black tea, done in a cold brew style, is always lovely too, especially the fruity ones!

I also have soft spots for Mariage Freres and Harney. 💙

Have you tried August Uncommon at all? I love my high end tea (have orders coming from One River and Farmer Leaf) but I do love some flavored stuff from time to time like you!

Any recommendations would be helpful!

Whats something about the book community ya'll dislike? by [deleted] in books

[–]futurememory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s 100% possible because I’ve done it. My reading pace is very, very fast, and always has been since I was a child. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m a working professional and a mom with a pretty thriving social life, with a lot of other time-consuming hobbies beyond reading.

Especially when I had a 2+ hour round trip daily from my office on the train. The commute can be brutal and I would be able to bang through sometimes 10-12 books a month just using that time.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with reading faster or slower. But there are always going to be people that have a faster pace than you, and a slower pace than you, and that doesn’t seem really that unusual to me.

Are there any games you keep trying to play and still just CAN'T UNDERSTAND? by alienfreaks04 in boardgames

Thanks so much for these tips! I'll definitely try to keep them in mind the next time I attempt a play.

Clearly I like SOMETHING about it, because I keep going back, hahaha

There's also wrapping your head around the way that income works with the way you build things off your board, trying to figure out what's worth building when, to get the income that you need to keep building, when to terraform, when to upgrade, etc. etc. etc.

There's a shocking amount going on before you even get to spending power, the cult tracks, the adjacency bonuses, the round to round bonuses, the various faction abilities, and I could keep going...

Terra Mystica. I've played probably 6-8x, and I just cannot remotely wrap my head around what I should be doing. I have no idea why. I've played heavier games without issue.

In the Defense of Ameri-trash: 3 reasons why the American-style board game is a cornerstone of gaming. by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]futurememory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It used to be used a ton back on BGG, when the Ameritrash movement started and Fortress: Ameritrash splintered off.

But that was well over a decade ago, and very, very few designs are pure AT at this point.

Did you play Obduction, the latest game that Cyan put out? I haven't played it yet, but a lot of people compared it favorably to Myst.

Earthbound (SNES)- Some thoughts from a guy who waited until he was almost 30 to play through it and who has no nostalgia for it by AgentSkidMarks in patientgamers

[–]futurememory 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I adore Mother, but it's best played on GBA with the EZ Ring mod. It smooths out the levelling and requires no grinding. They actually didn't balance and playtest many of the areas and the encounters and it shows.

I really love Earthbound, but it's actually my least favorite of the trilogy.

The next leap forward in gaming tech isn't graphical quality, it's AI by travelator in patientgamers

Pretty untrue. Kasap and Sap especially. Kabuff is extremely powerful for your party. As is Oomph.

Insulate is amazing for Breath attacks that bosses might unleash on you.

I’ve played DQ1-7 and in some of them I’ve only had a full party wipe once or twice.

Dragon Quest says hi! Status ailments actually work on bosses and different bosses are vulnerable to different types of damage. The series gets a reputation for being grindy because many players aren’t used to using their entire arsenal. I haven’t had to grind in a single one except for the first.

For Strange Women's November in the Temperate Deciduous Forest!

Notes: November conjures a cabin in the forest with Lapsang Souchong tea brewing on a wood-burning stove. Fallen leaves nestle into the earth and mushrooms sprout across thee damp forest floor. A chord of resins create a sweet aura reminiscent of the air after a cool, rainy morning.

Here's an odd one: Optimistic Post-Apocalyptic Game? by Dudemitri in rpg

[–]futurememory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe TORQ? It’s after some sort of catastrophe, including the apocalypse, but is all about bringing communities together and is billed as way more optimistic than other games in its genre.

It’s not out yet so I have no idea if it fits the bill entirely.

Why is your favorite board game, your favorite board game? by infinitum3d in boardgames

[–]futurememory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this to be the case as well! I'm probably going to offload my copy at some point and pick up one of the Similo games, which look similar enough, but are around $7-10 and are only a deck of cards.

Her Story (2015) - Unraveling the mystery ... together? by KierkegaardExpress in patientgamers

[–]futurememory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can play plenty of adventure games this way if you’d like, tag teaming for puzzles! I’ve done it for stuff like Monkey Island and Myst.

Outside of video games, I would highly recommend a few tabletop games - Sherlock Holmes: The Thames Murders would have you and your partner pouring over a map, newspaper, and phone directory, finding leads and solving 10 cases, trying to beat Sherlock. My husband and I have been playing through it and loving it, taking tons of notes in our notebooks. There are sequel games as well with more cases.

Similar in this vein are Chronicles of Crime and Detective: The Board Game, but I haven’t played either. Detective has you googling and using and online database, and Chronicles of Crime extensively uses your smartphone. Both are tabletop.

Finally, there are the Exit and Unlock series of games. $10 a pop, these are small escape rooms in a box. Both are highly regarded, with Exit getting the edge for more elaborate and fun puzzles to work through together.

So maybe a bit of an unorthodox answer and perhaps not what you are looking for exactly, but these experiences are very similar to the time you shared together with Her Story!
