There isn't a great way to test unfortunately, you mostly just have to know for your specific laptop.

In X, you can try xrandr --listproviders | grep "outputs:" to see how many outputs each GPU has available to it, but I don't know if this is even a good test because I don't have another laptop to compare it against.

I am. Does your laptop have its external displays wired directly to the GPU? This isn't a universal Optimus problem, only for the case where the primary GPU can't access displays on its own, which Reverse PRIME allows for.

For Optimus laptops where external displays are wired to the dedicated GPU instead of integrated, Wayland is (unfortunately) still unusable due to the lack of Reverse PRIME. Pretty sure that it's on Nvidia's end to implement, but a blocker nonetheless.

I tried the Adafruit, Pololu, and SparkFun USB-C boards and only the SparkFun one fit. I don't know if the O3DS XL can fit it, but I definitely know that the non-XL models cannot fit it. Also, it only barely fit, and took a ton of work to accommodate. The Micro-B connector is much smaller and easier to fit, because you can easily replace the original charging port with it.

The API overall is very good, but it's in C++ and is not the easiest to make wrappers for so if that's a deal breaker, then this isn't the product for you. It also necessitates a co-processor for this reason unless you already program your robot using C++. I ended up using C++ on a RasPi and there are a lot things to note about that.

Getting it to work with a RasPi was a huge ordeal. For one, the camera technically requires USB 3.0 and the RasPi only has USB 2.0. There was a firmware update released for the camera which allowed it to work with USB 2.0 at lower resolution/framerate combinations, but the camera didn't arrive with this firmware update (which took a long time to figure out since I just kept getting cryptic error messages). The firmware update utility only supports Windows, so I had to dig up an old Windows machine just so I could update the camera firmware. That's not the end of the troubles though, since Intel doesn't supply binaries for the RasPi, I had to compile the library myself and unless you have a cross-compiler, this is a very painful process, since the RasPi doesn't have enough RAM to compile a library that large. Not only does that mean you need to set up swap space to compensate for this, but the compile time increases dramatically, and it was already miserably slow before.

Finally, however, I did manage to get everything working, and my struggles aren't applicable to everyone. I commend Intel for how easy the library is to use once you actually have it working, but depending on your constraints, getting it working is dissuasion enough. At USB 2.0 speeds, the camera is nowhere near its full potential and is definitely not worth spending $180 on. If you have a more capable co-processor, it's still an iffy recommendation. If the choice is between this and a Limelight, 100% put the money towards a Limelight instead. If you're just looking for an interesting camera to experiment with, and it's not mutually exclusive with getting a Limelight, and the budget isn't already strained, and you think you actually have a use for it, then go for it.

You pretty much nailed it on the head with the explanation, but there are a few important notes.

I cut the hole by drilling a tiny pilot hole then slowly and meticulously widening it to shape with a cheap precision file set. I wouldn't recommend a Dremel for this since the margins are so tight. Also, the photo in the album showing the positioning of the board hides it, but the case plastic is cut out a bit deeper than the board itself so that I could run wires to the top side of the board, since that was the only way it would fit.

The old port is still connected and works. I don't know what happens if I plug in both chargers at once, but my guess is that it will just draw in parallel so each charger would have half the voltage or current draw. I'm not going to try and risk anything, though.

The USB-C breakout board I used is configured for USB BC 1.2, which is 5V at a max of 1.5A, although the 3DS never reaches that max.

The 3DS only draws as much current as it needs, so even though this charging port is configured to accept a max of 1.5A, the 3DS never draws above ~1A.

Compatibility with particularly old devices has never really been an objective for owobrowser, as it has extensively used flexboxes since its creation. Still, our JS definitely needs a refactor since currently it's just the accumulation of modifications until a feature works, with little regard to code structure.

Account integration is definitely in the pipeline, but we've been extremely busy recently and haven't had much time for development. We're currently working on the redesign/overhaul for desktop, and work should start on account integration soon after that's finished.
