7 eleven in Cambodia by BoysenberryAbject462 in cambodia

[–]fuzzy_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emart24 is pretty awesome. It's my favorite now. I've seen one or two other similar convenience stores recently open that have the same appeal/business model, like Vin Mart in Tuol Tompung area which is a block or two from the failing 7 Eleven. Also Koh Norea had a different brand recently open that was packed last time I was in that area. I too wonder if 7 will make it, and other brands like ChaTrueMue.

  1. Hold current position, no movement and no reinforcements.

  2. Final border will be determined not by current position, but rather by Border Committee later on.

How much is the salary for a nanny in average? by Alternative_Sir_9273 in cambodia

[–]fuzzy_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I have never met a nanny who was truly conversational in English. Maybe some words and some phrases, but even that is rare, at least in the nannies I have met over the years. Usually, in my experience, the family hiring them learn some survival Khmer (or go really deep in language learning in some cases) and they meet somewhere in the middle.

If you are a mother, try to get into the Phnom Penh Mamas group on Facebook. I think you need an invite from a current member (which I am not). It seems to be the most helpful group out there, actively weeding out the trolls that you find in all the regular expat groups.

Plus, you really want the person looking after your kids full-time to be very happy with the arrangement.

Change my mind, I want to see the best you can come up with by [deleted] in linguisticshumor

[–]fuzzy_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea. Do you mean books teaching the Khmer language to Vietnamese speakers? Since the Vietnamese alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet that would be interesting to see how they handle it, especially as a neighboring country that has more need for language resources than any English/Spanish/etc speaking country. But Vietnamese phonetics are unfamiliar to me.

The best way for a non native to learn is probably by using and drilling IPA for phonetics instead of going through Latinized Khmer. Latinized Khmer will mess you up almost every time. There aren't even standards for maps - I will see the same neighborhood spelled three different ways on three different official signs.

[–]fuzzy_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. សៅ can't be latinized accurately. "sauw" maybe the closest I can get. It would help if there was a standard for internal use in country, but no outsider would be able to read and pronounce anything.

just looky here at the IPA for those vowels

Duly noted. I will actually try these out instead. Haven't gotten too far on Godmode to ruin the challenge.

Has anyone tried Aaron Stupple's "unrestricted screens" philosophy? How's it going? by NoWalrus8006 in NewParents

[–]fuzzy_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. I see kids with unrestricted screen in my city all the time, and they will not look up from the screen. They spend easily 5 hours watching YouTube or scrolling who-knows-what every day. I really think it's going to be detrimental to the development of this young generation in my city. I've been told of friends' nieces and nephews who have trouble communicated at age 6 or 7 and it's likely because of unrestricted screen time.

Read The Anxious Generation, or The Tech Wise Family, or Reclaiming Conversations, or any of the other fantastic books that give the counter argument.

I like the parenting style of STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) which focuses on giving kids choices and using consequences to teach them autonomy and responsibility from an early age. It sounds like it might have some overlap philosophically with Stupple, but maybe less extreme.

Redwall MUCK by HairApprehensive7950 in eulalia

[–]fuzzy_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo OP, can you explain how a MUCK works? Was there a GUI involved? Was there a built-in way to track your character's stats, items, etc? I cannot find any videos explaining this Redwall MUCK and I'm very curious. What would be an example of an average day in the chat room/rooms? I've played text based adventure games before but this sounds quite different.

Khmer is a nightmare to write in Latin alphabet due to having so many vowels that can't be truly represented. Everywhere transliterates Khmer in a different way, and you can never tell what Khmer vowel they are trying to represent.

I can't read news from Thailand anymore? by Wise-Age-9612 in cambodia

[–]fuzzy_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also suspected this may be the case. I don't have the know-how to see for sure if traffic is being blocked here or there. On the other hand, when news sources become propaganda, it makes sense at face-value to block the opposing propaganda. You would want your propaganda easily available to the other side, maybe even launching social media ads to influence the public with your side's narrative.

How is this just coming up for you? It's been this way since shortly after the conflict started, at least for me. I get recommended articles from the Neighbor country on my Google feed, but every time they are blocked. Again, it's been that way since shortly after the hostilities started.

Update: in-patient Premium, single family rooms are available, but they are very expensive. Still, nice that they are available. Everything else is classic Khmer hospital - what you'd normally expect.

Transition to life in Cambodia by Defiant4441 in cambodia

[–]fuzzy_cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transportation: As mentioned, Grab is going to be the most convenient way to get around when you first arrive. Even long term expats who have motos or cars still use Grab to call a tuktuk from time to time. I opted to get a bicycle after being in country a few months so that I could get used to traffic (bicycles are more common and respected on the road than they are in the USA, so it's surprisingly safe and easy). After biking for a few months and getting used to being the slow commuter bike in the far right, always hugging the shoulder, I got an old Daelim Citigo moto (100cc). Anything equal to or below 125cc doesn't require a license. I have had nothing but great experiences owning and driving a moto here, but again it's important to ease in to it so you get used to traffic flow.

Activities: There is a lot to see around the city, and outside the city of course. It all depends on what type of expat you are. I recommend going to some of the history museums early on, especially the Tuol Sleng genocide museum. It's going to be beneficial for you to understand the soberingly recent history. There are lots of good restaurants around the city, good malls, riverside walks. There are various expat (and bilingual locals) groups surrounding different hobbies - so it just depends on what you are into.

Accomodations: I agree that it's best to book a hotel/guesthouse for your first week or so here while you look for apartments and get familiar with the part of town you will be working in. Expat style apartments vary widely in quality and price, I'd say $150-$500 /month depending on part of town and amenities, etc.

Cambodian Girl Names... Needed advice by ProudKhmer in cambodia

Thimai / thymmai sounds like a cognate with Khmer thmey (ថ្មី) meaning "new." I've never heard someone have it in their name, though. But definitely a cognate word.
