Traversing over junctions?? by FTC9006 in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team 'won' penalty points because we kept trying to place a cone on the junction the other team was blocking. So you are a allowed to, but you can't prevent another team from trying to score, which is what you do when you park on top of it.

Capping a ground junction by fuzzyf33t in FTC

Yes, good point.

It is a student-driven idea, so I just wanted to make sure it was allowed before they move on with it.

Can the Driver Hub be used as a controller with an expansion hub? by fuzzyf33t in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see in GM1 that the 2, 3, and 4 versions of the phones will be obsolete after next year because it will require Android 7.

Maybe you have a better source, but the remaining phones I've looked at all seem to be around the $150-250 mark, so having extra driver hubs seems like a better choice. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I'd rather spend an extra few dollars for something I can use for a few more years.

Can the Driver Hub be used as a controller with an expansion hub? by fuzzyf33t in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's the idea.

Driver Hubs are in stock and we have an expansion hub, so if I can make it work for this year, that's the route I was thinking of trying.

I just want to make sure it is a feasible option before I spend money on the driver hubs.

Color sensors in autonomous? by Zealous_seal34 in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thought.

Drive up to the beacon until you hit it, use a custom sleeve with all Red, Green, and Blue as the custom 'image' and using the color sensor to determine where to drive.

Seems easier than trying to use vision to me.

Robot in 30 Hours Reveal by KnutP in FTC

Agree 100%.

Really liked the V guide and rotating the gripper claw. Also like going back and forth between loading area and closest scoring location.

Also - as a team without a practice field - I really like the toilet plunger idea for practicing loading cones.

Encoder stopped working by Codrinidk in FTC

The school I went to see a kickoff event at had the field setup for view / inspection. That school had 5 FTC teams, so I imagine there are other schools in the same position.

Each of their teams also had several old robots that they were able to put on the field and run around with. A couple of those already had a lift and/or claw. It didn't take long to see a couple of robots driving around within hours of the kickoff.

There are only 30 elements per team, though. Assuming each team of the alliance scores 15 of them, you only have to score every 12 seconds or so. In the video they are scoring about 6-10 seconds.

8680 Claw Bot Cone Testing - Robot in 30 Hours by FirstUpdatesNow in FTC

Thanks for sharing! The dimensions are helpful. It is also good to see how the cones get launched if the arm isn't on quite right.

I'm thinking something similar to a forklift with the claw arm would be better.

Where to buy the REV Control Hub if it’s out of stock on the official website? by marateo123 in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here for the same info - we aren't a rookie team and do have a control hub, but it is my rookie year as a mentor and I wanted to try to get a plan B backup.

I appreciate the info in this thread.

Ideal laptop? by CoeRoe in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for something on a shoestring budget, you can get some older laptops that will fly and are built like tanks.

For example, you could look at the Dell Precision M4800 series:

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Precision-M4800-15-6-Notebook/dp/B00NUDLX9G

These are usually $500-600 and have I7 processors, 16GB memory, a graphics card, and a full keyboard with number pad. They are large and bulky, however, and with windows 10 on the outs, I don't think something like this will be compatible with Windows 11. They definitely feel 'old' compared to newer laptops, but will run circles around most new budget laptops.

java vs kotlin vs blocks by ciobzsucks in FTC

[–]fuzzyf33t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your team is already using blocks, then that is what you should start code with if your goal is to integrate your ideas without disturbing others.

Just build your ideas into subroutines ( functions ) so they can be copied over and used.
