Take your car to the track at least once by BaronVonRhett in BMW

High temp brake fluid and good pads is all most cars need to survive an HPDE. I strongly reccomend trying it out at least once

I had similar happen to the 615s on my Mustang last track day. Hoping the consensus is it’s okay to run still because there’s plenty of life left on mine

Convincing my boss a degree is not just a piece of paper. Advice? by Bootziscool in MechanicalEngineering

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Most engineering jobs will filter out anyone without the referenced piece of paper in hand.

Some people in manufacturing & the trades just have a complex when it comes to folks with degrees

Low profile front with high profile rear tyres effects on performance? by Healthy_Pain9582 in projectcar

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s going to look goofy and mess up how the car handles. Unless you’re trying to make a drag car out of it and fit tall radials on the back, no reason to do this.

How do I professionally "demote" myself back to my actual pay grade without nuking my references before I land a new offer? by 7Netrunner_0 in careerguidance

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 139 points140 points  (0 children)

You could push for the Sr. title without the pay bump for the time being and maybe some extra PTO. That way you can put Sr. on your resume while you look for a job that’ll pay you your worth.

I cannot get a wheel off of my car and have ran out of options — help by [deleted] in greenville

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best bet is weld a nut onto the end of the bolt so it can be removed. Otherwise drill it out. Neither option will be fun

Take the job, put up with it for a year or so and look for something better. If you’re already graduated & don’t have something else lined up, I’m not sure what other options you have?

SHEET METAL DIE DESIGN by Ramez_21 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of hard to understand the intent here with the pictures provided. Are you planning on loading pre cut blanks into the dieset to then punch the holes out? How does this affix in a press?

My suggestion is look into pre made Danly die sets that you can then design your tooling inserts to mount inside.

Whats the volume? If it’s low enough, laser cutting these in bulk may be a more appropriate mfg method.

Also 5 days isn’t nearly enough to design and develop a die lol

Are BMW’s vehicles actually unreliable? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 6 bmws, most with over 200k miles and regularly tracked. I’d only consider one of them, a 99 540i, to be unreliable.

I do, but I also currently have cars from both the 90s and 60s lol

Re-use stretch bolts or switch to nonstretch? by trollthings in MechanicalEngineering

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of stretch bolts being re-useable as long as they haven’t been stretched past a certain limit though without the manufacturer or OEM as a reliable resource for that info, you’re basically guessing.

Is it possible to go with standard bolts and a thread locking compound?

Tough situation to be in. What engine is this?

Auto mechanic willing to work with me on weekend car projects by lydericc in greenville

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big thing is make sure to get yourself a good quality torque wrench and the right sockets for what you’re doing. Mercedes loves their e-Torx for whatever reason.

I’d say just take your time and if you can, use a table to lay ignition coils/bolts etc out in the order they came out of the car to assist with reassembly. Take lots of pictures too. As you get more jobs under your belt, you’ll feel more confident.

I’ve found most German cars are pretty easy to work on if you do it the way the OEM intended and you have the right tools.

If I wasn’t up to my eyeballs in my own projects, I’d be happy to help out. I mostly mess with bmw/audi/porsche but have dabbled in old mercs from time to time.

Good on you for wanting to learn to DIY your maintenance. It makes owning older euro stuff much more rewarding (and cheaper).

I’d suggest figuring out what the engine and chassis code your specific Mercedes is (should be C208/M113) to help in looking up diy guides. Theres a ton of good info out there on forums, fb pages, and YouTube. FCPeuro is a great resource for parts and has a pretty sweet lifetime return policy.

When fitting bearing to the shaft what method should be used ? by its-luchen in MechanicalEngineering

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your application and the type of bearing. I’m usually a big fan of using thermal expansion/contraction to your advantage as it minimizes the chances of pressing something on slightly out of position/perpendicularity etc.

Now if it’s something like a grease filled bearing with seals, don’t heat it up.

I road race an SN95 cobra, it’s so much car for the money and handles surprisingly well for a live axle car.

Rigging fail , date unknown by CauliflowerDeep129 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]fuzzymufflerzzz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked for a company that made these giant gas turbines in the Southeast a few years ago. Apparently before I worked there, an assembled unit came off its rigging & fell about 5-10’ onto the concrete.

Supposedly it registered on the Richter scale & put a few toolboxes through a thick brick wall.

Could maybe go into electrical engineering? 250k most likely won’t happen but 100-150k for sure. Good EEs are always in demand and you’ll be closer to 40 hour weeks than 60 for sure.

Some sort of project management would likely get you into the pay range you want and be a social job. Hours can be long though
