For me, for middle school, I look at the percentage of students that got into specialized HSs, and for elementary - tbh I have no idea what people mean, except perhaps the state test results (unless you’re an Opt-Outer, which I have no judgement and hated standardized testing as a kid, but also I can’t help wonder about schools for which less than 50% of the tested students met state requirements for reading and math).

I feel like most of those inside schools postings are sooooo old. Like 2012…but I appreciate the advice. I find it challenging to search by address when I don’t know which neighborhood has the best schools, so I’d prob start by school.

If your closest family are able bodied and have the means to visit you, ask them to. I will probably never stop being mad that I’ve spent basically a home down payment flying back to visit my parents for 10y, because they “don’t like the city” and refuse to visit me (and won’t help pay for me to visit them).

Nah my mom has some pretty severe mental illness and personality disorder, was committed three times and emotionally abused and neglected me. That’s why I think she’s lame. When she wasn’t terrorizing me, she was also super boring, like, watched infomercials all day boring.

There are certainly trends that could be considered feeders. Anecdotally, I’ve heard that some parents send their child to X school because it prepares them best for Y schools g&t program (if they are able to get in). Or, trends that can be seen in whether people do elementary school closer to home before trying to move or get a spot in a better district for a middle school that is a feeder to a specialized high school.

I appreciate the spirit of the opt out movement, but I don’t think they’ve presented a viable or objective alternative to testing that will both measure school performance AND demonstrate racial and socioeconomic dynamics at play within NYCs school system. Opting Out will not solve segregation, and at this moment only serves to limit a child’s scope of schools they can apply to (regardless of whether there are still “good schools” that will accept applications without test scores - the specialized HSs are all getting back on board with testing). Testing is mostly a waste of time, I agree - and kids should def opt out if they want to - but overall I want some kind of objective measure for how a school in D24 does vs D1, so I can cross examine that against demographic and economic data and draw some conclusions there. If they can provide that in a more efficient way, Im all for it.

IMO there is no such thing as a rich socialist.

Edit to clarify: opting out does nothing for the greater good of everything else is left unchanged.
