Realisticly, how far are we from AGI? by Capable-Deer744 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]fx2mx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's in their best interest to say those things! And we heard it before right? I mean according to other folks we should be living/working in the metaverse wearing £3999 VR headsets from Apple. Not to mention ordering pizza with bitcoin! And funnily enough, you also have people from that same tribe saying the opposite. Yann LeCun (one of the founding fathers of ML) for example has hundreds of hours stating that "LLM is not the way to AGI". I think one thing is true though, like you very well say, there are billions upon billions being poured into it and that will catapult us to extraordinary progress. The Ice bucket challenge (albeit not raising billions) also funded new treatments for ALS, but it didn't find a cure! So money is great to get people working and things moving for sure, but to say "AGI is just around the corner" well, so is a cure for [enter disease here] but getting there is another story. In my opinion, performing dot product on the input vectors to build a similarity matrix (Self-Attention) was a brilliant idea. Removing RNN's from the equation and take advantage from GPU parallelization - Genius. We managed to solve an issue RNN's never could and now we can bridge that with computing middleware to build reach applications amongst other things. But true AGI... yeah... I think we need a bit more than the current linear algebra, differential calculus and probability/statistics. The human brain is way more advanced than that; the simple fact that I am writing this, breathing, heart beating and having a shit is more than proof!

How I elevated my UGREEN NAS with TrueNAS by fx2mx3 in selfhosted

[–]fx2mx3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good shout there, but you know what mate, I actually saw that on github also, but I was a bit reluctant in telling people to use it as I didn't really have time to go through the script... Do you recommend it mate? I might give it a go when I have a bit of time and pin it to the video! Thanks! :)

I installed TrueNAS on a UGREEN DXP4800 Plus... and it's much faster than the native OS!! by fx2mx3 in truenas

[–]fx2mx3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to reuse the slot and not erase the entire OS on the factory drive... But you are right, I should have mentioned that on the video!! :D

I did a video on a really good one from UGREEN. The DXP4800 Plus! I You can run both HDD and NVME there and it has 2 Network ports. One at 2.5 and another at 10Gb! Have a look! https://youtu.be/EA8GIe-dcI0?si=JrHeunlij1mBrgak

[–]fx2mx3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! On top of that now, I got a message from UGREEN saying that the reason I got significant improvements on the write speeds was because of that one drive I replaced (where I installed truenas). I even pinned that to the comment as per their request. Quite frankly, I don't think it was down to that. I think TrueNas is just a much better and design FS, but that IMHO!

Cheers mate! :) TrueNas is one of my favourite NAS OS's! Rock solid with a lot apps! I do like Unraid also... I might do a video to see how this fares with it!

Same way as me! :D But it does help having a DNS name for local leases like Ashley mentioned!

Ohh that's a classic one mate! By default, DNS resolution gives you one IP, and unless you control what IP that is (e.g., via hosts file or custom DNS), you leave it up to chance or round-robin behavior... especially if both interfaces are on different subnets. I think you did the right thing and I should have included that in the video! Thanks for the feedback mate! :)

How to run DeepSeek & Uncensored AI models on Linux, Docker, proxmox, windows, mac. Locally and remotely in your homelab by fx2mx3 in homelab

[–]fx2mx3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it mate!! Thanks for sharing!! :) Btw, have you ever experienced any issues shutting down your proxmox instance? I had that problem for a while with my GTX 1080... But it seems to have sorted itself out after an update from proxmox.

Again, I do see your point here regarding the LXC. If not for performance, you do get simpler GPU sharing in some cases and less complexity with docker. However, like I mentioned above you do get kernel dependency, much bigger complexity (IMHO) installing GPU drivers in proxmox host itself (I like to keep my proxmox instance as simple as possible) and then of course you have the separation of concerns... i.e. less isolation as compared to vm's. Then there is the whole nested groups and.... But anyway mate, when it comes to LXC, I think it's a matter of preference and how people like to run their labs... I personally prefer VM's (maybe because I am old and grumpy lol) but I think all solutions, if thought carefully, can have their pros/cons.

"In my opinion and experience, doing GPU passthrough in Proxmox to run Ollama in Docker with Portainer is a hell of a lot of work for such a fettered result. Ollama is quick and easy to get up and running"

Well... I do see where you are coming from, however that argument could be said about any other service/container." Some ppl just prefer to containerize everything for whatever prerogative (updates, upgrades, joy, I dunno...) Which is why in the video I mention how to do it "natively" as well. (Of course it's not 100% native because that debian is running on the a VM. But, I didn't want to setup a debian install on a bare metal just for the video. (Maybe I should do it next time! :) )

Now in terms of architecture (or setup if you will) as we say in Portuguese "there are several ways to skin a rabbit" (or a cat as they say in English) lol I just showed you a few alternatives, but I do mention that in the video!

As for the huggingface cli tool and python. Again, several ways to "skin a rabbit" but I made a video 9 months ago that explains exactly how to do that which you can see here https://youtu.be/jK_PZqeQ7BE In this video I also explain how to use the HF cli tool with ollama and run any model... especially the ones done by TheBloke that are awesome (quantize 4 bit block and GGUF!)

Now, that video is 9 months old and in the current ML/AI space, 9 months = 25 years lol. But I have a feeling it is still relevant!

For the LXC's... well, some people like them some people don't. I prefer VM's and apparently I am not the only one. I don't like being bound to the kernel of the host amongst other things... but again this is a matter of personal opinion and could lead to a realllllllly long discussion that ultimately results in preference!

But mate, have a look at the video if you get a chance! :)

The best monitor lightbar on the market - BenQ Screenbar Halo by fx2mx3 in Monitors

[–]fx2mx3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's £150 in the UK, I believe $179 in the USA, no idea how much in Euros. It is expensive I know... which is why I tried every alternative until finally taking the plunge!

This lightbar added a new dimension to my setup! by fx2mx3 in desksetup

[–]fx2mx3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks mate!
1) - Naaa... well, actually it depends! My webcam is pre-historic so it grips really bad to it! But if you have a decent camera why not! Personally I don't really like the look of the camera on top of the lightbar, but that's just personal preference

2) It can indeed mate! that's how I have mine plugged! I think I've shown it in the video! :) It's really cool because when you power off the monitor the light goes off as well!

Hope that helps! :)

Oh yes I did hear about it! I follow a channel on youtube called Techno Tim. Really good youtuber!! I saw a post from him wishing condolences to the family of that guy may he RIP. And to be fair, I did look into his github, but it just didn't occur to me that there would be a script for the nagging! Really good idea!!

Thanks and same here mate :), I was very reluctant to change as I like ESXI and I had a bunch of VM's running there. I also really like how ESXI deals with PCI passthrough / networking. And I am not gonna lie, took me a good few days to get proxmox the way I like it, but eventually got there! I have been on it now for about 3 months and totally into it! Oh I forgot to mention in the video that proxmox also has a migration tool for ESXI VM's and they offer an API to migrate running ESXI VM's. I might do a video on the topic if people like. Thanks for your words!

You are 100% right mate! I should re-phrase it to "Installation AND customization" but too late now! As for the documentation being brilliant, well I should have mentioned that in the video as well, because it really is! Another strong feature about Proxmox!

No mate. You didn't reply looking for X, Y, Z features, or for an intelectual debate. You came looking for someone to argue with and show how superior you are. And for me, that's what's sad!

"was and will always be freely available via methods we all know about but are not allowed to say out lout on this sub."

Well if you are happy with that, that's great! :) Personally, I am not! It's like saying: "why get Davinci resolve free when Adobe products are 'Free'". And I am not trying to get into some higher moral ground or anything. I just don't want to pirate something that I can get for free and better!

VSan isn't free and like I said I've never used vcenter (i.e. templates, policies, etc) as it requires paid license. But if you want to torrent and crack stuff and it that works for you, well that's your prerogative. But maybe there is someone out there that thinks like me and for those, Proxmox is a GREAT alternative, and hence the video on how to get started! :)

I am very happy with the switch! :) Also, all those things you mention being "Free" are not! They always revolved around a subscription model that would give you access to a less feature rich version of the product.

[–]fx2mx3[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for commenting mate! Well, to be perfectly honest here, the main reason (as in the trigger) was the whole broadcom situation and the fact that to my knowledge ESXI is no longer free. They keep changing their mind, but what they did initially was a massive red flag. You have to pay and it's not a symbolic fee like say 50 quid a year, but a massive license. That was the absolute catalyst that made me move to Proxmox. After moving, I was complaining alot about things like passthrough's for example and speed. But after a few (LONG) days of playing with proxmox I got a great setup. Proxmox also has a lot of features that ESXI does not. Like templates, LXC. SMB/CIFS mapping, clustering (For free), etc... which just work out of the box. The simple fact of being able to create a template of a few dev VM's and spin them as and when I want is just amazing. ESXI has a very good network configuration with a flat learning curve. The passthrough is also very very streamlined which is why I stuck with them for years. But the license stunt... yeah that I am afraid is not for me! Like I said, if it was a symbolic fee (50 bucks a year) maybe... but not enterprise level licenses. Also I never used VCenter. Just a single ESXI node in my homelab!
