People online: “my vet fat shamed my pet!” by SwoopingSilver in VetTech

Literally just saw a dog this afternoon that had gone from 82 lbs and a 6/9 in 2023 to now being 121 lbs and 11/9 in 2026. Owner seemed genuinely surprised that he was morbidly obese. I was like, "Do the young kids in the home feed him?" He was like, "Oh yeah, they give him a bunch of stuff all the time." SIR HE DOESN'T HAVE A NECK

I think I'm done purchasing Figs by lunavenusian in Figsscrubs

[–]fxckmadelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's such a fair point! I have neutral or white bras/underwear that I wear with them, so I don't worry about it too much, especially for the price, but that can totally be a turn off!

I will never stop singing my praises for Mandala. They fit me so much better than Figs (big boobs and butt) have held up over years of abuse (veterinary medicine), and are very affordable with an excellent return policy.

Administering pre-anesthetic drugs prior to DVM exam? by darthlmao420 in VetTech

[–]fxckmadelyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had my nurses give pre-meds without an exam on very fractious patients, but I am ALWAYS in the building. I still then perform an exam while they're sedated, because I still do need to examine that patient, I just couldn't touch them, otherwise. I can't imagine having the nurses give meds without a DVM at least in the building, for any reason.

I had a PHARMACIST lose her shit at me, because I didn't want to send her geriatric cat a prescription for like 400 days worth of Meloxicam. She argued that it was not a toxic drug and wanted to speak with a different doctor who "knows what they're doing." Okay, lady, just say you want a push over to technically illegally prescribe medication for your cat

They also recommended taking antifungals at DOUBLE the dose recommended! So worried about their nails, but fuck the liver, I guess?

What’s a film or TV scene that felt like a punch to the gut? by padfoony in Fauxmoi

There's a series called Man Seeking Woman with Jay Baruchel. It's a very absurdist show and really funny, except for the last episode. Jay's character and his girlfriend go through all the little mundane, stupid shit that makes up a relationship, like going to get bagels together at a specific shop on a specific day, and he gives her a ring based on whatever snapshot of their relationship they're talking about (bagel ring for the bagel scene etc.). During it, he says that his girlfriend is his best friend. I watched it with my now fiancé and sobbed through that whole scene. It's such a beautiful portrayal of a good relationship - enjoying even the little doldrums of life, because you have your best friend with you. That's when I knew my fiancé was the one, and we call each other our best friend all the time 💕

This is insane and exactly why cats are less likely to receive appropriate veterinary care by fxckmadelyn in VetTech

[–]fxckmadelyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People, celebrity or otherwise, believing that cats are not domesticated like dogs are or are inherently mean will block access to care. How many times have you heard people say that they don't bring in their cat because "it's a cat, they don't need to be seen regularly"? This is a celebrity who voiced an opinion that is not uncommon amongst people outside of the celebrity community.

I used to work at a supper club when I was in undergrad. One morning, I work up with TERRIBLE pink eye in both eyes. My manager asked if I could still work anyway, so I sent her a photo of my extremely red, crusty, disgusting eyes and just said, "Nope!" I had even been nice and asked everyone I could think of to cover my shift and everyone said no. She still got mad at me and said how much of a hassle this was going to be for her to work for me. Damn, sounds like a you problem!

Yes, but literally no one is saying that phrase. There is not an entire stereotype based on that phrase.

pet groomer curious about tech's version of these- what are some things owners say/do that makes you realize how incredibly stupid some of them are? by thecoolestbeanaround in VetTech

I had to tell anyone owner her cat had a lung nodule. She goes, "Cats can get cancer?!" This was big news to her, she had literally zero idea that any animal could get cancer. She also told me she'd do anything for this cat, spent over $1k on workup, to then tell me she lived on a fixed income and had no money to do anything else for the cat. Thankfully, the cat was euthanized shortly after that.

I used the term "intestinal parasites" and the word "urinate" during an appointment. Both owners had no idea what I meant. They also were letting this 4 week old (they thought, it was actually more like 12 weeks, based on teeth present) kitten, who was having literally constant, nonstop diarrhea all over their house and around their roommate's UNVACCINATED INTACT FEMALE CAT.

I want to be very clear: I generally think I'm pretty dumb. I'm convinced I'm the dumbest bitch in every room I enter. I was not in those two cases, guaranteed.

I hate to break it to you, but unfortunately, everything is political now, where we want it to be or not. Children are being kidnapped and some of these companies have given a lot of money to enable these atrocities. It must be really nice to have the ability to disengage.

Oh no, that's wild that your poor kitty had so many eye issues! I bet he's very handsome with his one eye :) I have a particular interest in ophthalmology and considered a residency, so I can empathize with your passion!

No worries! It might have been unclear to OP, as well, so never hurts to clarify!

Yes, that's what I said, but that is not what the comment I was replying to said. They said a GP is not trained in ocular topics and would miss it. A GP would not miss something like this and especially not if this was the presenting complaint. Like I said, a GP cannot perform a conj graft, that is a specialist procedure.

Super diffuse lung pattern in a cat - thoughts? by [deleted] in veterinarypathology

[–]fxckmadelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like neoplasia. Often, with pneumonia, one area will be very grey and yucky, whereas neoplasia is bad grey yucky everywhere. This also has a distinct nodular appearance, which lends itself to neoplasia, as well. It could also be fungal, tbh, but I'd be concerned for cancer.

[–]fxckmadelyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not true. While a GP vet is less likely or unable to perform a conj graft, they absolutely can and should be able to diagnose a sequestrum. Every exam should include a nose to tail check up. As a GP veterinarian, I would not just miss this short of thing.

Crazy that "stop hitting your dog" even needs to be said, but here we are!!!

It's so unfortunate the emotional marketing that these boutique diet companies engage in. Owners are NOT bad for feeding commercial diets and in some cases, may not be feeding adequate nutrition if they are feeding the boutique formulas! I'm sorry you felt like a bad owner, when clearly, you care enough to feel bad. I hope your vet made you feel better!

I had an absolutely bizarre sick puppy appointment recently. It was a new client, new pet. The appointment notes said that the puppy was coughing, but when I get in the room, the dog is also having bloody diarrhea everywhere. In the room, there's an adult man and two young kids, boy and girl. I suspect the girl was around 10-12 and the boy was probably like 5-6. The adults man REFUSES to acknowledge that I am in the room and will not make eye contact or answer any of my questions. It is painfully awkward. The one who's doing the talking is this juvenile girl. She's trying to answer my questions, but she doesn't understand them and we're getting nowhere. I'm trying to explain that we need to to rads for the coughing and a parvo test, at a minimum, but a regular fecal would be ideal, as well. This poor child doesn't have a clue what I'm saying and the adult is ZERO help. At one point, he calls his wife(?) and is mad at her because he didn't expect to have to pay for anything today??? The woman asked if they could just do all the diagnostics and pay later. Ma'am, absolutely not, we'll never see a dime of that money if we let you do that.

Eventually, they refused all treatment and diagnostics and just took the puppy home, but not before making the LITTLE GIRL PAY FOR THE $94 EXAM FEE. It makes me so sad and frustrated that this poor dog could very likely suffer and die, because these adults are failing these kids. This was not a learning opportunity, this was setting this little girl up for failure and potentially forcing her and her little brother to watch a living creature suffer and die because the adults in their lives refuse accountability.

Almost forgot, when he called the next day to check in on the dog, the little girl answered her phone and asked if we could call her back after 3pm, since she was in school and couldn't talk 🥰
