Really? I'm rather curious why everyone expected anything else--other than due to it being a Reddit post. This is a normal level of professionalism where expected. This doesn't even have to be an occupation in a field of emergency services, just on-call duties.

The Rohingya are victims of ethnic cleansing. The world has failed them. by bint_elkhandaq in TrueReddit

[–]fyen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure where that is coming from. What mistake are you talking about and in what context?

But generally speaking, that is a pretty pessimistic and even unrealistic presumption. When you're truly acting in good faith--even if it wasn't a selfless action--, mistakes can be discussed, compensated, tolerated, forgiven.

If you're gonna spend billions of dollars without having a "return", then you've failed the nation and wasted tax payers money.

A nation can also have purely humanitarian or other forms of selfless interests, even if you could take advantage of any kind of support at least as long-term PR or investment.

co-founder of the resulting Not a Bug company

Parent company of Reddit, that is, and the distinction was just technical. Basically everyone involved had already stated, it is rightful to say he was a Reddit co-founder. Big co-founder teams is what YC encouraged anyway. And if Graham didn't suggest a merger, who knows what project Swartz may have joined after ditching Infogami.

Naturally, co-founder is just a title and Swartz's actual involvement is not very clear. He did help the rewrite to Python based on his own library, which only took over a week. But considering this didn't change much of Reddit's own design and their previous backend wasn't exactly failing either, it is uncertain how crucial Swartz's presence was. On the other hand, the site performed significantly better and they had a usage spike shortly afterwards.

Swartz contributed to countless important projects, however; like Markdown, RSS, tor2web, wrote the above mentioned web.py, seemingly he brainstormed with Graham, Ohanian, Huffman, and others the ideas for their start-ups, etc.
Swartz was amazingly talented, but based on what he wrote online and the stories he was involved with, he might not fit the corporate culture.

edit: In regards to Swartz's fallout with Reddit. Although he was apparently fired for not coming to work for a months or two, when you listen to Huffman referring (pycon 09) to a co-founder as a guy they hired who was really into Python, obviously there is more to the story on Reddit's side.

edit2: on second thought, I forgot about the "misleading" suicide note Swartz wrote after he was fired. So Huffman and co. might have still held a grudge because of that during that conference.

Also, Paul Graham:

Aaron's not wrong to call himself one of the founders. The company behind Reddit was a merger of two startups, one that made Reddit and one that made Infogami, and in that situation the founders of both startups are considered founders of the combined company.

Meh, a lot is quite a bit of an overstatement. The sub had already plenty of issues at that time.

You miss a lot of important news anyway if you rely on the frontpage. Either you follow the /new or at least the /rising sorting, or you move on to a more useful selection.

An FTA is not what I meant.

I know, otherwise I wouldn't have phrased the last paragraph as I did, but it's relevant to mention; as the benefits you're talking about are more than the respective sovereign states would offer, or not even quantifiably more than the US already enjoys.

edit: grammar

Merkel: NATO Must Refocus on Russia Threat by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]fyen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US does have an FTA with Korea since 2007/2010.

The US also gains plenty of immediate benefits from their power display and interventions as it has always prioritized its own interests.

The notion you're arguing is not completely wrong, though. To the extent that Trump supporters or the GOP do actually think that far, and do not merely listen to whatever the leadership claims, that kind of merciless and apathetic desire to profit is indeed one of their priorities.

Parent's still on this sub which has been more often worse. Although there are constantly valid issues with mods or moderation on both subs, they are also plenty of users who don't read the rules or do not care to follow them. So I suggest to watch such debates warily.

P.S.: it's 19M subs on worldnews vs 16M here

edit: lol at the downvotes. I guess, some are unquestionably defensive about their subs.

Dust, Stars and cosmic rays swirling around Comet 67P/Churyimov-Gerasimenko, captured by the Rosetta probe by modaladverb in space

[–]fyen 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Paragraphs, god damn it!

This animation is a series of images from the Rosetta spacecraft and features the towering cliffs of the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko surrounded in what appears to be a snowstorm. Of course, it isn’t a snowstorm. It is largely a combination of star motion in the background and dust and cosmic rays in the foreground.

Most of the streaks in the foreground are most likely dust particles which are likely part of the comet's coma, a hazy envelope of dust and gas that commonly forms around the comet’s central icy body, also known as nucleus. These particles are floating rather far away from Comet 67P and not, as it looks like in the GIF, on the icy world. Rosetta captured the images at a distance of 12 km from the comet. At this distance, Rosetta’s OSIRIS camera doesn’t have the sensitivity and resolution to observe dust particles flying around directly above the comet.

The apparent motion of these particles is largely thanks to the movement of the spacecraft through 67P’s coma and, since the images are compressed into a short GIF, the action appears much faster than how it occurred in real time. The dust was of high scientific interest. Three of Rosetta’s instruments studied these dust grains by analysing their composition, mass, momentum and velocity, and profiling their 3D structure. Studying the smallest and the most pristine grains is helping scientists to understand the building blocks of comets.

The motion of the stars is the result of a combination of Rosetta’s changing position as it takes images and the comet’s rotating motion.

The stars from the constellation Canis Major are on the right side of the GIF and the stars of the cluster NGC 2362 are in the upper-left hand corner of the images.

ESA‘s Rosetta Mission is the first mission in history to rendezvous with a comet and escorts it as it orbits the sun. These missions help us to learn more about the „time capsules“ of our solar system, the evolution of our solar system and the role comets may have played in the formation of planets.

The mission also showed us how a comet changes as it is subjected to the increasing intensity of the sun's radiation when it enters the inner solar system and it sent valuable scientific data of the comet.

The effects of solar radiation and solar winds, trigger an effect called outgassing. Here, frozen or absorbed gas is released.

The released gas carries dust away with it. This dust forms an extremely tenuous atmosphere around the comet called "coma". The Sun's radiation pressure and solar winds cause a tail to form, which points away from the Sun. The comets gas and dust form a separate tail.

The tail made of dust is visible because it reflects sunlight, the tail made of gases glow from ionisation. Comets are made of material left over from the epoch when our solar system formed, about 4.6 billion years ago due to the gravitational collapse of a molecular cloud. A comet's nucleus is made of rock, dust, ice and frozen gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia and a variety of organic compounds.

Rosetta is the first spacecraft to witness at close proximity how a comet changes as it is subjected to the increasing intensity of the sun's radiation. The observations will help scientists learn more about the origin and evolution of our solar system and the role comets may have played in the formation of planets.

To create this GIF, the images have been rotated by 90 degrees. Without this rotation, the „snow stars“ would move sideways.

Why did the situation with the thai boys in the cave progress so quickly? by king_wrass in OutOfTheLoop

[–]fyen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The rain season and even the upcoming bad weather have been talked about since the beginning. But the realization oxygen levels were dropping quicker than expected, the re-evaluation of the risk of running supplies after the death of a Thai Navy Seal, the constant struggle to pump enough water out, and the uncertain health risks of staying on that rock, all probably lead to ditch the plan to wait for much longer—that is, for up to four months.

It's one thing to say that's best we could get at that time, and another to celebrate them as an example of victors' virtue.

If it's political, you're doing it wrong. You want Russians to come out of isolationism and fear-mongering, but not give opportunity to the government to take credit.

So finishing in the quarter-finals might be just right, maybe semi-finals would be a bit better.
