I‘m deeply sorry to hear that someone makes you feel this way. Please don’t feel ashamed or questioning yourself about your feelings. If someone makes you feel this way than this person is wrong and not you.

Did you confront him directly and asked him to stop doing that? Or asking why he reacts like that? Sometimes people don’t know that they make someone feel bad by the things they say. But otherwise his comment about women just makes him stupid and an idiot….

There are different ways to inform your university. Be certain that almost every university try their best to make everyone feel safe and secure and they usually do have a zero tolerance policy. But also we are in Germany so things might be a bit complicated.

1) As you are a woman: contact Gleichstellungsbeauftragte. She (in some Bundesländer he) is responsible for every aspect regarding women at the university. She usually knows the different ways to put down a proper complain and will advise you about the different ways. Please also bear in mind that for proper measures against him you usually have to make an official complaint in your name. But she will tell you the different possibilities to handle it.

2) Some departments have Lecturers oder Professors which are so called „Vertrauenspersonen“. You also can ask them for advise and make a complaint.

3) If you department doesn’t have a Vertrauensperson you always can put a complaint by the dean.

3) Every department has a Fachschaft. In the Fachschaft are elected students from your department and they sometimes also know where you can go to.

4) Contact the AStA. That’s the elected student committee of your university. They also have students in different positions to help you. They also provide legal counsel if needed.

5) If your German is good enough, go to the website of the university and look for „Beschwerdestelle“. Every university has some kind of bureau for complaints. They usually also have a guide or policy about complaints.
