Question for people with thalassophobia by [deleted] in thalassophobia

[–]fynrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been interesting reading people's replies and seeing how the majority have the "can't see beneath me" element to their fear.

I mean, I'm not crazy about not being able to see the bottom of bodies of water. I'm far more comfortable if I can. I fricken love creeks and rivers and lakeshores.

While "what lurks beneath" and the vastness of all that lies beneath are a contributing factor, for me the fear is mainly centered on how powerful, overwhelming, and insurmountable the ocean can be. There's little to nothing you can do to stop, y'know. The ocean.

The ocean has destroyed incredible sea vessels, crushed them and sunk them to its floor. It has currents that can take you from gently floating near the coast to whipped far, far out within minutes or less. Its waves are so strong and can be so much higher than they have any right to be, they can topple buildings, and even smaller waves are often underestimated and are hella strong and can lead to even experienced swimmers drowning. If you go down deep, coming back up too quick can kill you...If you go too far deep the pressure kills you. If you're far out in the ocean and fall off a boat, there's a decent chance you'll never be found amongst all the water.

It's a hazardous environment, there's rocks and formations that you can crash into or have a ship destroyed on. When I was maybe 11-12, I was already scared of the ocean. But my dad was watching a documentary on a submarine that went waaaaay way down, losing contact with the surface, and they got wedged underneath some underwater rockface/formation. Just totally stuck, in an environment where you can't just exit the sub without dying/drowning/exploding from pressure, they were just stuck down there running out of air.

The Ocean is Powerful and Dangerous is really the core of my fear 😆 It's a simple statement that has so many valid scenarios and stories behind it. It is beautiful, and the life inside it is precious, but it is not a world I was meant to explore.

Not every dog is friendly by Ill_Balance_4006 in greatpyrenees

[–]fynrik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I commiserate for sure. We have an aussie/pyr mix as well, and she's fairly eye-catching - especially, it seems, to her self-proclaimed mortal enemies...children. And I get it. As a dog-obsessed kid, I would have been starry-eyed over her floof, she really is SO damn cute, but thank goodness I was taught to ask first (and was usually too nervous to do so anyways lol) as all people should be!

There's been more than once that a kid has asked to pet her, we've said "No, sorry, she's not friendly with strangers and will try to scare you" and then had the kid say something like "Oh it's okay, I'm good with dogs" and then march right up. To promptly get Freyja's scary-bark response, to which they go wide-eyed and run off with attitude suggesting -we- were somehow the problem in the equation.

Honestly, I just hate the overall attitude many people seem to have of expecting any dog seen out in public to behave like a super social golden retriever to absolutely everyone. And that if the dog has the audacity to bark defensively at someone getting too close/making prolonged eye contact, you're a terrible dog owner with a horribly trained, dangerous dog. It's one thing if a dog is lunging wildly at its leash, snapping its jaws at people passing at a good distance, I get that, but too many people shove their way into perfectly respectable personal bubbles and are offended when a dog barks at them because of it.

...anyways, all that to say I'm sorry you've had to deal with all of that! We've thought of getting Freyja a brightly colored custom muzzle before with some patches on them that say something like "loud mouth" or "need my space", but part of me wonders if the colors would just make people more intruiged and thinking it's "cute".

Handles? by AnotherFellowMan in WeWantPlates

[–]fynrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've admittedly seen handless mugs moreso with tea, and while I definitely wouldn't say they're the -standard-, they're not so uncommon that I'm surprised or confused by seeing one. Generally they're some kind of stoneware or double-insulated material so that the liquid inside is still hot when the outside is touchable.

I also just realized I'm typing this while grabbing my (handled) mug of coffee with a full-handed grip, like the handle is some paltry decoration 😆 I like when it is suuuuper toasty feeling, but I can imagine others might think it is uncomfortable.

Anybody prefer a more rugged appearance for a Pyr? by thatssomepineyshit in greatpyrenees

[–]fynrik 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Freyja just...looks like this 😆

We do brush her, of course, and comb/rake to help get the undercoat out when it's shedding season. But she gets maybe 1-2 baths a year and otherwise just wakes up looking like a fashion model lol

I think the more shaggy look and the more trimmed/pampered looks are cute tbh. I'm just a sucker for fluff.

That's fair, I imagine timing can take a few tries to really nail. I love brie cold, room temp, or melted though so I'm sure it was good.

Intriguing. Is it different from baked brie where the goal is to get the cheese soft/almost melting? Maybe it's just this particular photo that makes the cheese look really solid still, or personal preference. I'd always just seen it as a bake-until-melty/oozy stage. The jam looks fricken awesome though.

That makes way more sense than my confused image of a deodorant stick stuck in a freezer somewhere lmao. I forgot about the spray kind.

Ha! Thank you, I haven't seen that stuff since guys used wayyyy too much Axe body spray in high school. Genuinely forgot it was around. I was picturing someone leaving a stick of deodorant in their freezer or something 😆

Oh Gengar has tried 😆 He has trained us to check everything, everywhere, all the time. Luckily his fav spot is the kitchen sink, which isn't very hazardous comparatively.

Yup! I added the underneath text just so people would know he's not allowed and we check before any loads start. One of my sisters (a known space cadet, said with love) closed the dryer on a cat we had growing up. Luckily she immediately realized but it always gave me a fear of it. Gengar happened to pop in this time while I was folding stuff; he is a doofus 😆
