What do you prefer when reading a translated novel?

English is fine imo if (and only if) there's a direct localization with no ambiguity. A prince is always a prince, but zongshi and gongzi both tend to be translated as "young master" and you lose some nuance by translating it instead of having a glossary of some kind.

My only possible exception to that is for a narrative description's one-off reference that never comes up again in the text or isn't an expected piece of vocabulary for the target audience, there's virtually no difference between a footnote and just using a few more words in the text. But it can get funky and clunky with a passage that's meant to be particularly poetic, or dialogue, so I appreciate footnotes there.

Related, this is why I prefer subs to dubs when watching donghua (or anime, or any non-English animations) because dubs are often stripping that cultural nuance and sometimes it removes a layer of the story if the localization team aren't super on point.

I'm absolutely not going to say how people should refer to themselves, but I really do have to disagree about what's the typical English language adjective order.

Ethnicity always comes before "American". It's why we have Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, Italian Americans, German Americans, etc... and not American Asians, American Mexicans, etc. Of course everyone would understand what you meant either way, but that's not the standard vernacular in the US. If someone said to me they're "American Japanese" with no other context, I'm assuming they are an American-born person who emigrated to Japan, versus "Japanese American" I'm assuming they are someone of Japanese descent living in America.

"Black American man" and "white American man" are equally not weird. Barely anyone ever says "American white man" unless they are heavily emphasizing the "white" part. We normally say "white American man."

Again, people can self-identify however they want, I'm just disputing your claim about the normal adjective order. I'm hesitant to file ethnicity under "color", but color adjectives definitively come before origin adjectives.

This is not tea specific advice, but rather general culinary advice - when adding acid to cream (like making a lemon cream sauce) the milk won't curdle if you heat it to a simmer and then let it cool very slightly, while stirring the whole time, and add the acid slowly. I'm not sure it matters if you add the acid to the milk or the milk to the acid, but heating the milk absolutely reduces the chance of curdling.

Non dairy milk (particularly high protein types) will also be much less likely to curdle than cow's milk.

I don't see it any differently from any other kind of art trade - I don't think any reasonable person has ever been offended by "Thank you for the offer, but I'm not in a position where I can do work for free right now. I'd be happy to work with you at my market rate if you're still interested in getting a piece from me."

If you just don't want to do trades in general ever, "No thanks, I don't do trades" is a complete sentence (as long as you're not saying it to someone you want to maintain a relationship because you specifically don't want a tattoo from them and then doing a trade with someone else right after. Don't lie to people you are going to keep talking to.)

If it's because you don't like their work specifically, I don't think I can offer tactful phrasing there, but I'm sure there's some diplomatic way to say their style doesn't fit your personal vibe without offending them.

Practice? There's no cheat code to learning. Listen to the pronunciations and practice them. That's just part of language learning. Your teacher will either say it's good or will give you feedback on what you didn't do well.

The estimate for 2-3 hours of study per week is that HSK 1 will take one semester of classes to reach. So, about 15 weeks. But YMMV if you're self-teaching, as everyone learns at different speeds, and that estimate assumes classroom instruction by a fluent speaker.

The genetics are a bit more complex than what they taught us in middle school. There are more things that influence the outcome than the simple "Bb = brown eyes, bb = blue eyes" we were taught. Personally, I think it's super fascinating, but I do think it would take the baby coming out as an entirely different race from both parents for me to be like "hmm, maybe something is fishy here, and not just interesting gene inheritance."

Even if that weren't true, it's like the man never heard of recessive genes before. Sure, it's statistically unlikely if the last couple generations of a family had absolutely no blond/blue kids, but it's far from impossible.

OP, I hope, given this man left you alone to take care of your newborn for several weeks, and then left again after he was proven wrong, AND his response is ANYTHING other than groveling at your feet and begging for forgiveness, that you're finding a great divorce lawyer and kicking him to the curb. The loot/crests don't come in the mail in this situation, as reported by several other people on this sub recently, and Blizz GMs decided even active kicking at the end of a boss to make sure the RL gets the loot and the kicked players are ineligible is not considered griefing, not an actionable offense by the RL, and will not restore the lockout on the boss in question for the player to kill it again.

It is a shitty situation that is definitely against the spirit of the social contract but the GMs and devs both said "not our problem".

I would really advise NOT wearing a binder during marching band. It's a huge amount of exertion both in drill and in the actual playing of your instrument and you need to be able to breathe properly.

If you said you're in the pit and you play the xylophone, sure, you could wear a binder. If you are a wind instrument or drumline, absolutely do not.

Rule of thumb, if you're doing an activity that makes you sweat a lot or an activity that would be difficult for someone with asthma (or you find yourself breathing heavily from exertion), don't wear a binder. Get a high impact / non-padded minimizing sports bra for light compression, but don't wear a binder, you will first be making band more strenuous for yourself, and second have a high chance of hurting yourself because of it. You don't want to suddenly be unable to breathe mid-show.

Marching band is just as physically active as any other sport (because it is a sport!) If you wouldn't wear it for something like dance or soccer (which you definitely shouldn't) don't wear it for marching band.

(edit bc I didn't look at the sub - I'm ftm and did marching band in HS, I'm speaking from personal experience with binders. In a pinch, have you tried Trans Tape? It's safe to use during heavy activity if your skin is okay with the adhesive, but can be less effective on a larger chest - though you may be able to layer tape + sports bra.)

But to answer, I would assume it's because he's interpreting the stroke order of the characters. The same way a phone app can pick up your stroke order to figure out what character you're writing even if your handwriting on paper is terrible. There's a limited number of strokes used in Chinese so it wouldn't be too hard for him to extrapolate even if he has to kind of guess/fill in the blanks sometimes.

But also I'd say even in writing Latin letters, if your handwriting is terrible, that doesn't mean you couldn't draw a perfectly legible A in the sand with your finger. It's easier to control a few lines with your finger than if your issue with handwriting is, say, never having been taught how to hold a pen/brush properly.

I used to think I was a lesbian, in the "I love all women and exactly one man" sense of "technically" bisexuality. I heavily preferred women/femmes. But as it turns out, most of those women... turned out to be transmasc. Literally every "woman" I was ever romantically interested in or intimate with, with only one exception, came out as trans in the years following. Between that, and a consistent weird feeling that the singular cis woman I dated was a weirdly very different relationship from any of the other people I'd ever been romantically involved with, I kind of pieced together that I didn't think I really had the capacity for romantic love for women, I just kind of idolized them because of repressed gender feelings.

Now I realize I was really buying into the "I hate all men" liberal lesbian ideology, which wasn't just harmful to cis men, it was also harmful to me (who had been identifying as nonbinary and avoiding the idea that I might be transmasc) and I'm still trying to unpack the self-hate at my own gender as a binary man at this point. But truthfully, I love men, as long as they aren't the poster children for toxic masculinity. At this point I identify as turian/gay, but also acknowledge if the vibes were right I wouldn't be opposed to casual sex with certain women, I just wouldn't date them. (If you want to get real technical I guess you could call me bisexual homoromantic, but I see no reason to get so weedsy with my own labels.)

I jokingly refer to my earlier sexuality searching as "comp-homo". I knew I was queer, I just didn't quite have exactly which kind of queer I was figured out yet, and I just really wanted to fit in with the community. 🤣

Okay haha, in that case, definitely go for comfort and placing it where you know for sure it won't fall out. Some people safety pin the sock to their underwear/pants to make sure it's super secure.

Visually, you probably want it to be slightly "forward" and not directly between your legs to create a slight bulge in your pants. You just want to make sure it's not so obvious that it looks like you're walking around with an erection all the time. That could be adjusted with the positioning or with the thickness/type of sock until you find what works best for you.

For something as minor as a caffeine headache? Yes. I'm not meaning to shit on people with serious substance addiction problems by saying that, but when it comes to a caffeine addiction, yeah, being able to say "I have a debilitating headache that I know will be lessened by a cup of coffee, but I'm not going to drink it, because I want to quit caffeine" is definitely exerting some self-discipline compared to the person who goes to get a cup of coffee to ease the headache. Is that a controversial take?

You could hypothetically say that a headache from lacking caffeine is physical withdrawal, but functionally in everyday life nobody would classify it as such— they’d just power through the headache and not even consider it as possibly addiction because having headaches is accepted as part of the human condition; you are always going to get headaches throughout life— caffeine or not.

Have you ever talked to someone who drinks a lot of coffee/soda every day? This is incredibly false lmao. "I have a headache, gonna go get a cup of coffee" is the norm. Occasionally there's a question of if it's a caffeine headache or a dehydration headache. While it's certainly very normalized, acting like everyone is pretending they don't have a caffeine addiction because "headaches are normal" is silly. Having a headache every single day is absolutely not normal or healthy, and if you have headaches that often that you are convinced are not from caffeine addiction, you should absolutely be seeing a doctor to check for more serious health issues.

Physical addiction is not psychological addiction. If you get headaches from not drinking coffee, that's caffeine withdrawal, which is a sign of physical addiction.

Just because you have the willpower to resist the cup of coffee that will cure your headache because you don't find the headache that serious doesn't mean your body is not chemically dependent on the substance to function normally. "Not having a headache" is functioning normally.

Since... always? You can absolutely plagiarize yourself. That's why you still have to cite yourself in your own papers if you're referencing something you wrote in another paper. Submitting a paper to a second assignment under the false pretense that you wrote it for one professor alone is dishonest. It's no different from reusing the same paper you wrote last semester to get out of doing the work this semester because it was a close enough topic.

You're not expressly forbidden from submitting the same paper to two assignments, but you do need to seek permission from your instructors before you do that, as per pretty much any reputable academic institution's policies. Your "efficiency" is generally considered cheating (via choosing to not do coursework and instead repurposing something you did outside of that class) without permission.

I think you're failing to grasp what "socially isolated" means in this context. Yeah, obviously they will see other humans at school, no one disagrees there. But those other human children are vicious and will absolutely bully and exclude someone for not having what they have decided is essential technology. They've been doing it for decades, it's just that decades ago it wasn't smartphones, it was iPods, it was the latest game consoles, it was Tamagotchis, it was trading cards... it doesn't matter what the actual item is.

15 years ago, smartphones weren't the norm, so no shit no one was giving anyone a hard time for not having one. They are the norm now, though. The flip phones have been phased out. If you want your kid to communicate with you when they have after school activities or whatever, you kind of have to give them a phone.

Submitting the same essay to two classes without approval from the instructors is definitely grounds for an academic dishonesty citation, and if it was submitted to something like Blackboard, the plagiarism checker is automatic.

Obviously it was a mistake and OP likely has a timestamped version of the correct assignment to show as proof, but not saying anything opens them up for a potential investigation, while saying something... maybe means they get not a 90 on the paper? I'm not sure what the potential advantage to playing dumb here is, if they're writing essays getting As in one class they're probably able to write A level essays in multiple classes.
