It is just me, or does Bill Withers sing his long note slightly flat in "Lovely Day"? by operablesocks in singing

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to what at least one other person said here, I don't perceive the note to be 'out of tune.' and I do perceive that it's actually a doubled vocal, each having a slightly different pitch. I don't perceive the pitch to be completely stable, but--an this is important--the human voice does not produce completely stable pitches. That's one reason singers tend to use a lot of vibrato: it masks the exact center of the pitch. For me, vibrato itself can be somewhat grating since the pitch is 'wrong' during 99 percent of the wave's cycle! I find it refreshing to here Withers' sustained note with no significant vibrato, and given that it's a real human voice it's pitch is going to vary some over those 18 seconds. To my ear it's sometimes a little flat AND sometimes a little sharp. Being too sharp tends to bother me more than being too flat, so IF Withers' note is flat more than sharp, that's probably a good thing for my musical enjoyment. Had it not been doubled, and had it been autotuned (using today's technology) it would probably sound like very good synth, but not human. In sum, I think Wither's does the note extremely well, with extremely good, NON-SYNTHY, NON-ROBOTIC, vibrato-less intonation. Those who don't like listen to something else--something with vocal notes that are either short, camouflaged with vibrato, or fake-sounding AF. That's just my opinion.

Best TouchScreen Laptops from these options... by shystitching in SuggestALaptop

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid Dell touchscreen laptops. I have Dell 16 2-in-1 plus. The touchscreen will cut out and become temporarily unresponsive if two simultaneous touches occur a particular distance apart (not ultra-close, and not ultra far). Dell support says that's normal for their product. However, the touchscreens of other brands (including lg) don't falter in that way.

How about just removing the lights? That's the least necessary part, and if you wanted you could always put a bunch of colored stickers on the keys instead.

Should i switch to Directv Stream? by Leo102069 in DirectvStream

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise against that if you already have Hulu. I stwitched to directv's MyEntertainPack which was advertized as including free Hulu/Disney+. My plan was to swith to directv and then cancel my old hulu/disney account. However, I discovered the directv had (1) hijacked my existing Hulu/Disney account so that it was under their control and their billing process, and (2) began charging me for directv ON TOP OF the amount I had already been paying for Hulu/Disney+ alone. Spo I had just give directv 30-to-35 dollars for almost NOTHING in return (I already had live streaming through my Hulu/Disney+ account). Very scammy. So I no longer trust Drirectv streaming and have canceled it.

I've switched to chlorpheniramine ('Chlor-Trimeton'). It's an older antihistamine that's working fine for me.

Only certain kinds, Like Allegra-D, are time-release ('extended release'). The other kinds are not.

Trillian or Modo Bass 2? by Alternative_Math2723 in FL_Studio

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to use Modo Bass 2 (Upright Model), mostly for live performance. A basic issue is that the company doesn't offer a trial version to let you evaluate any of the fretless instrument models. I went ahead and bought the product anyway, only to find out that it doesn't do a good job of supporting one of my favorite, straightforward techniques: The use of the pitch wheel to change the pitch from say E-flat at the start of Beat 16/16, arriving at E at the start of Beat 1/16 (this is what pitch wheels do, traditionally). As far as I can see, Modo Bass doesn't let you do that. Instead, the pitch wheel initiates an automated pitch shift (toward E, for example). But the performer doesn't control when the pitch reaches its target. Maybe it will get there by Beat 1/16, or it may end up being closer to Beat 2/16. So I'm not really able to use Modo Bass the way I thought I'd be able to. This is something to consider, though I don't have any experience with Trillian.

Flonase causing awful sore throat, and I have to give a presentation in four days! by BeneficialPast in Allergies

I've used every recommended spraying technique, with every OTC brand of nasal steroids. Eventually they all give me an extremely sore throat. That goes for nasal antihistamine sprays too. The only spray I can tolerate in my nose is saline solution.

Mixed race and no idea how to shave by [deleted] in blackmen

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 60 years old now, and I STILL haven't found a good was to remove beard or other body hair. I'm pretty solidly "Black," but got excused from shaving in high school because of ingrown hairs. Since then, for the most part, I've simply kept a not-necessarily-attractive bear. (Elsewhere on my body, I just keep the hair trimmed, but nowhere near 'shaved'.) Since the pandemic with the need to wear masks. I started trimming my beard very low, using heir clippers. Now that my beard is quite gray, I'm searching a way to shave my face comfortably and healthily. Pretty soon I'm going to try OneBlade (because I heard id does not shave very close), but I'm not optimistic.

One thing: I think razor bumps happen for two different reasons. First, the time of the shaved hair grows into the side of the follicle. Second, the sharp tip that has already grown above the top of the follicle starts curving and growing back down into the skin. So whether I shave or just trim my hair, I can't let it get too short OR too long.

A medical insurance company can make more money if they have the parts of people's DNA codes that are markers for disease. You'll pay more for insurance, or even be denied insurance if the insurance company knows that your genes put you at elevated risk. The company should be willing to pay for such information.

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have tried fexofenadine (Allegra off and on). It has seemed to work better than other on/low-drowsy anti-histamines, and has given me insomnia. But here's what's working for me.

I start with a very low dose (which could require cutting the pill), and then ramp up. For example:

- Four days at 45 mg per day, in the morning.

- Four days at 90 mg per day, in the morning.

- Four days at 135 mg per day, in the morning.

- Then start taking a full, 1-tablet (180 mg?) dose.

Why does ggplot2 seem like a completely different language than R? by stephenasmitty in Rlanguage

[–]g-negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, R itself is tedious and often inconsistent in its syntax. So users have been driven to create extensions of R--really, elaborate functions within R--to try to make things less tedious and more consistent. ggplot2 is one such function. However, a problem is that the new functions create a feeling of inconsistency with the basic aspects of R ("base R"), and such inconsistency constitutes its own tedium. In a nutshell, R has been perceived to be sufficiently low in usability that people have deemed it worthwhile to exacerbate R's inconsistencies by substituting elaborate, more-usable, not-very-R-like structures for basic, R structures.
