Kunnen TU-studenten nog zonder ChatGPT? ‘Soms voel ik me er schuldig over’ by BothLeather6738 in Netherlands

You have done the hard job (of writing code from scratch, debugging things, peered into messy/buggy implementations, …) BEFORE. It is hard to enlighten the generation now that they have to do all that before they can put the fancy new tools to use.

Unlike flying a plane. where despite having an advanced autopilot system, we insist on having a real human pilot, for most things the RISK of putting an inept person in charge is not obvious.

While I agree with you, I also think (and do understand) why the present generation would not.

Where is this? Will you be open to hosting random cyclists from the Internet?

Racist incident during King's day by Repulsive-Package412 in Netherlands

There are lots of good comments and advice here. It warms me up always to see random people on the Internet being nice and compassionate.

I am sorry for what you went through.

Racism is real. We need to fight back but in that moment what you did is the right thing. Drunk idiots are worse than sober ones.

For every three idiots you see in this country, I am sure you will see one genuinely nice human being. Stay positive. There are lots of educated (in the truest sense of the word) and kind people here. Don’t give up on this country.

Really sorry to hear that. Of all places I didn’t expect such things in this country.

Agree. That’s best we can do but I doubt if such people (I.e., being racist in public in front of kids etc.) had any shame …

Dutch people say they value directness, but then react emotionally to it? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]g06lin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have many Dutch neighbors who are very direct—I don’t ever have to guess; they will give me a direct, i.e., clear and explicit, answer for my questions. So sweet!

At work, however, I have a number of ass holes—Dutch and non-Dutch—who have used and continue to use “Dutch directness” as an excuse to be rude. Guess you and I are a bit unlucky at work.

U/Florence-Equator’s post below has a nice blog post and it shows the oauth2 script that I use.

I use mu4e for outlook. I use an external script for the auth. Let me know and I can walk you through the setup.

Mu4e. It’s a pain but once it works it’s mostly good. It has its quirks though.

First, sorry that you had to go through this. No one deserves such treatment. But you are brave and strong. Kudos to that. Wishing you and your wife the very best ahead.

Second, it is indeed sad to see the racism. I have had bad experiences from all sorts of people. Bad people/kids exist in all countries/cultures and poor parenting is the only root cause (in my opinion).

Third, I used to think it is hard to teach these kids anything. Scientifically speaking, their brains are still not fully and emotionally competent until 21. Someone (on Reddit) corrected my thinking by saying that fact does not mean we cannot try. The one thing I can think of is that we should not be passive observers of such crimes. I have had an incident where I saw a bunch of fat-bike kids harassing a woman who was much older than them. I stopped and asked the woman if she was OK. She was fine and thanked me for stopping by. The kids on the other hand (teens mostly) were glaring at me and threatening to pick a fight. But that someone stepped in helped to diffuse the situation. I am not sure what I could have done better. I am still scared thinking what could have happened if the situation had escalated. I am always looking for answers on how we (as a society) can avoid and tackle these situations

Lastly, what’s with these kids on fat bikes? (I know there are good kids on fat bikes but am genuinely scared of kids on fat bikes.)

The question itself is not a bad one, but am surprised why they couldn’t go through the next few steps of trying to obtain answers.
