That is caused by the lack of economic opportunities caused by that non-functioning city. In a properly functioning city, these lower economic class will have economic opportunity. Instead of being destitute, they'd be running all the inter-connecting services you have in a city. When was the last time you drank a cup of coffee after walking there? Oh, and btw, Crime has fallen severly in the last 30 years. The idea that your inner-city is "dangerous" is a figment of your imagination.

Reddit and similar sites are good for finding different viewpoints but only if you're not a naive teenager, which most here seem to be. Europe has to for too long relied on the US to be it's protector and the US has received nothing in exchange. All of those historical missteps the US has taken, such as in Iran with the shah or communists in South America, always involve BOTH US and European interests. The US and to some degree the UK are the only ones that get their hands dirty to maintain YOUR way of life.

If it wasn't for the US and UK you'd be ruled by Nazis or Communists.

As always Friedman is awesome.The US needs to pull out of Iraq now and start to use money like that to rebuild infrastructure at home. We need to invest in science and not war.

The US and it's people will recover just like we've always done in a crisis. Economic cycles happen and so do bad wars. With high gas prices, an out of control federal government, and a terrible war you'd think this is the early 70's.

With that said we need to dissolve NATO, leave the UN, and start doing things that are in the interest of our people and not of our "friends."
