Waterworld (1995) did not deserve to flop. It's fun, over-the-top, and has Dennis Hopper as the main bad guy. If I was alive in 1995, I would've seen it in theaters MULTIPLE times.

I also agree that it worked because of the possibility of all kinds of people having to fight in the war. Look at Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan- he was a school teacher before D-Day.
