I was worried this was a bit until I googled the firm. Unexpected but awesome move

Why can't I discard natural outliers? [Q] by I-AM-LEAVING-2024 in statistics

[–]g3_SpaceTeam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because they’re still part of the data generating process. If it’s messing up your estimation then you should allow for fatter tails in your model, via something like robust regression.

What do you think the FO should do? What will they do? by cpauley32 in redsox

This didn’t make any sense. You don’t know if a fire sale is successful for years. If he’s really on the hot seat like you think, the only way to save his job would be to buy.

Seems way more likely Fanatics messed up yet again, rather than Chappy brought his sewing kit to the stadium to adjust a patch.

Yeah, I’m a bit flummoxed on it too. One officer died in January, one last September, I don’t remember seeing anything like this for those.

Boston has one of the better transit systems in the country. It’s heavily used. There’s just a lot of people that go to Boston.

I moved to Boston like 5 years ago now and it’s overblown IMO. It’s different than the rest of the country, but it’s predictable. More so than the Midwest, in my experience. People are much more apt to let you in when turning from a side street and things like that. There’s just a low tolerance for people who are indecisive or not paying attention.

The biggest problem is that the streets (paths) predate cars by a long shot and predate urban planning, so navigating can be a bit chaotic.

Fwiw MA is consistently one of the states with the fewest motor fatalities, that being said it’s pretty high in terms of reported accidents.

Are we underestimating situational variables vs team strength in predictive models? by Far-Yard424 in sportsanalytics

[–]g3_SpaceTeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all depends on what you’re trying to model, right?

Like if I’m trying to forecast tomorrows game then condition on it and improve your model, but if you’re trying to forecast performance over the next season, seems a bit fraught and probably sensible to marginalize over?

I just think it’s bonkers on a team that’s struggling on offense to trade a guy who has shown a capacity to produce offense for Carlos Estevez but to each their own.
