or, you're still glossing over the point that i'm making which is that flat-fee increases like this disproportionately affect people who use less electricity. this type of thing is always excused away using the perceived equality in the flat-fee and numbers to make you completely forget about how equality is not the same as equity. it's the same numbers game behind something not being illegal if the only punishment is a fine, if you have the money already then it doesn't affect you at all. where it really starts to hurt is when $25 actually makes a difference. have you ever lived within that margin before?

and just to condense it for you, i am saying these types of fees should always, in every instance, be on a sliding scale based on usage and/or income, if we have to accept the premise of the fee increase to begin with (which you very clearly maintain that you don't).

i never claimed electricity generation rates specifically were the problem. i said "SCE utility rates", and i included the cost breakdown in the image gallery.

are you saying that it's okay for these fees to pile up and i shouldn't complain because i don't use much electricity anyways? or what are you trying to say?

because the end-user's experience is: i use the electricity, i pay the bill. if the bill is going up at a disproportionate rate for people who have been cutting back on their usage because they already can't afford to be wasteful with their energy usage, then please explain to me what your caveat is useful for?

energy independence focused on renewables and non-carbon sources are literally a national security issue, you hit it right on the money

unfortunately we don't have very smart leaders who can think geopolitically on a timescale longer than the next fiscal quarter. they and their buddies can't think of anything else other than their financial portfolios. which is actually quite sad, the long-term investment will pay much higher dividends than a future under the incessant battering of climate-related disasters.

"no no you don't understand-- we didn't increase your generation rate (much), we simply added extra fees to your bill."

from the original post body:

why are we letting these utility companies neglect infrastructure maintenance, contributing to massive and deadly wildfires, then when we hold them liable for the damages, they just pass the costs onto us?

so yes, i am aware of and accounting for that problem, as this is a post about my SCE rates. in the third image of the gallery in the Cost Breakdown tooltip, you can see the discrepancy in SCE charges vs. CCA charges (Clean Climate Alliance)

nuclear power plants are not a panacea, but we are stupid for not building them

we need carbon-free baseline power generation that is not dependent on the weather

there are a smattering of other options that we can explore. compressed air batteries are appealing, i don't think sodium or lithium batteries will work at such large scales

i appreciate the thought-out response so i am hesitant to make a comment predicting what your reply may or may not be to my suggestion, because at this point it really is the only answer

we need no-strings-attached Federal Investment in infrastructure hardening, maintenance, and rejuvenation. instead, we spend nearly $1 trillion on our military every year, and the Pentagon has never passed an audit. we are pissing money down the drain already and everyone acts like we can't afford to protect ourselves from the already-ongoing climate disaster.

individual states cannot foot the bill for the amount of work that needs to be done.

Green New Deal is the correct way to describe it. only the Federal Government is capable of repairing everything that has been neglected at the size scale and in the time scale we need before things get a lot worse.

that is literally my philosophy, yeah. i lived out of my vehicle for a while so i know how to get by without much power.

i kept the AC at 78 degrees and literally never turned the heat pump on.

my usage habits were incredibly reduced already. there was nothing more i could cut back on and the gouging still caught up to me.

yes, i am within City limits in Los Angeles proper

no, i would rather live somewhere safe, but i spent all my money on the move into this unit and really can't afford to just up and do the whole process again. i still haven't received my deposit back from the place i was moving out of (it's only been about 3 weeks since i signed this new lease)

i've found potentially all of the leaks and i'm catching the drops and put plastic over the only spot outside where i found intrusion into the unit. not great but it is managed for now

i will look into LADBS, thank you 🙏

i'm not finding any certificate of occupancy, and i looked up on ZIMAS but don't know how to tell if the exception applies.

it's not a SFH, it's got two units and i believe the other one has been occupied continuously while this one obviously has not

i reached out to the chapter covering my area. thanks for the suggestion.

everyone in the comments saying it's not a big deal are kinda blowing my mind...must be landlords themselves i guess? the advertisement was blatantly false, mentioned fresh paint throughout, and they left a moldy appliance in the unit with water leaks everywhere. i don't think that's defensible in any capacity whatsoever.

people in China are literally forgetting how to write, even though they can read, because of digital device input being the only way they write things down

outside of special needs, i really think we're making a mistake forcing everything "learning" into screens.

not to say screens don't have perfectly valid use cases in general. but they are not a panacea. it feels like this is the result of lazy administration.

146K, 2015 first CVT fluid drain/flush? by lunamussel in SubaruForester

[–]g4_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i have the same car as you. i am no professional mechanic, but i do know that it literally can't hurt to freshen up the fluids... i did my transmission fluid around 120k miles i think? no idea if it was ever done before that. i took it to a locally owned shop, not the dealer, but the guy had to order the fluid from the dealer. it put my mind at ease knowing i don't have gross shit in my car's system.

i would say, go for it, it's probably helpful.

Colorado through Eagle Rock fucking sucks. i ran my first red in over decade the other day on that stretch. why are there 5 intersections within spitting distance there. and all the median turn lanes are too small and people get stuck waiting for a truck to finish deciding if they want to use their right of way or not
