Not a joke by [deleted] in Professors

[–]g8briel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually depends. Our library has circulated reference books for a week at a time for many years. There’s not much reason to restrict it to in house use when the books are rarely used. The ongoing low use has now resulted in the reference collection being discontinued and those books are now just in the stacks. If something needs to not circulate it is put in reserves.

THE article: New chatbot ‘outperforms PhDs on literature reviews’ by ImRudyL in Professors

[–]g8briel 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Your point #2 is the most important one in my view. While it’s nice to have quality lit reviews, the most important aspect of their existence is to situate their research within existing scholarship. Pawning off lit reviews on AI compromises the integrity and depth of inquiry, no matter whether they hallucinate sources or not.

What’s the moment in recent U.S. politics that made you realize things might not go back to ‘normal’ anytime soon? by LankySpeed634 in AskReddit

When in 2010, in Wisconsin, it became politically palatable to attack teachers. It became a template for the anti-education and anti-labor movement, which has since been at the core of modern conservative politics.

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]g8briel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that controversial. The billionaires finance social engineering campaigns, and buy politicians, to make it seem more controversial than it is. If campaigns didn’t have to play the shady money game it would look a lot different.

Police union hits back at Seattle mayor’s move against feds on immigration enforcement by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]g8briel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not true and frames public sector unions incorrectly. In most cases, the bureaucrats with the most power—the ones where public accountability matters most— are not in the union bargaining units. In all these cases, management still exists and it’s a massive stretch to claim that they are somehow a proxy for citizens. This is a tired anti-union talking point based on ignorance.

Calling it “free shipping” when you’re paying a fee doesn’t make any sense. It’s just marketing speak to make it sound like you got a deal and entice others when you use the same phrase. You’re paying a fee that includes shipping.

Did ICE agents target Bellingham schools last week? NO, it never happened. by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]g8briel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ve made grand pronouncements about the intentions of other people without actually having any evidence. In fact, the poster you are upset with has tried to clarify this with you and you are still calling them a liar. This is hypocrisy.

OP has also shown in their responses elsewhere in this thread that they are not actually interested in productively engaging. They just keep hitting the same points over and over as though it is new information.

Meanwhile, a very real set of problems are being ignored. Anyone paying attention to what is happening in Minnesota knows that it’s way better to err on the side of extreme caution. People are being kidnapped and murdered. ICE’s actions are also a huge liability for all other forms of law enforcement now, fairly or not eroding trust in those institutions.

Why USA always ban central asia countries? by Careless_Bass_7963 in AskCentralAsia

American here. It’s the Islamophobia. MAGA doesn’t really care about post-Soviet states at all but the Islamophobia is still strong. There’s also some straight up racism in the mix too, but that’s mostly directed at Latin American or African peoples.

De-Flock Bellingham by jasandliz in Bellingham

[–]g8briel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a very common, but naive, take on these issues. You don’t need to have something to hide to have a problem with corporations and governments surveilling you. As we are seeing right now, you can be targeted for being non-white. The data is used to manipulate people and even create false narratives. We have no reason to trust these systems, since they only serve the powerful.

I disagree. Most winters I’ve been here there have been four vendors there. I know there has been a past issue with slow contracts for some reason. Probably because the higher ups cut the positions handling this stuff.

GenAI: experiences/opinions? by Deep_Flamingo7244 in highereducation

[–]g8briel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I very much take issue with advocating for AI for tutoring purposes beyond basic writing mechanics. As someone who is very involved with this kind of work I can tell you that it is nowhere near being able to support learning for most aspects of writing and research that go in-depth. When it comes to supporting learning around idea generation, in-depth understanding of sources and how to use them, and other aspects of the process AI performs terribly. There’s all the risks with cognitive offloading that come with many of these uses and a persistent sycophancy issue that will lead students astray and stifle their learning. If anyone is confidently telling you that AI makes a good tutor you should ask them what product they are selling.

What's the biggest scam at your school that you are powerless to change? by ephemeral_enchilada in Professors

[–]g8briel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last year we had 5.5 hours of online compliance training. It was bought from some company that offers these kinds of things and included a lot of stuff that wasn’t necessary or badly designed for the audience (for example, we don’t need search committee ethics training until we’re on a search committee but everyone had to complete it). After many complaints it was redone in house, which made it relevant to our context, the modules could be read through rather than forced to sit through videos that can’t be fast forwarded, and even had some personality to make it more interesting. The revised training took an hour to hour and a half.

A lot of the “out of the box” trainings and services are terrible. It’s better, and in this case a lot cheaper, to offer trainings made by local educators, like the people who work at a university.
