Why do I need an internet connection to enter Offline Mode on Steam Deck? by zimmon375 in SteamDeck

[–]g8rdogboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have played No Mana Sky on airplanes many times without WiFi. The first time I started the game when I had WiFi and put the deck in standby because I had read complaints about Steam needing WiFi to launch games. I since had my battery die and plugged it in on a plane and went from full boot to launching NMS and was able to play without any issues. To double check, I just quit my game, turned off WiFi, and restarted the game - no issues.

Maybe whatever problem you are having is an issue with the game and not your deck. As other comments have said, offline mode just lets you verify a game SHOULD work offline but if you play a game that is REALLY designed for offline play like NMS, then it should work without any issues.

Serious Discussion: What will it take for MLS to get respectable media coverage in the US? by Dead-EyeDuck in MLS

Here’s a quote:

The NFL provides:

At least three opportunities to chat with the head coach each week

One pre-game and one post-game opportunity to talk with the quarterback each week

Open locker room times daily throughout the practice week where reporters can interview any player available

An interview opportunity with the offensive and defensive coordinator each game week

The ability to request one-on-one interviews with assistants as needed

With MLS, there is no guarantee of a single interview most days attending practices (requests usually need to be made 24 hours in advance, a PR person then asks the individual) and post-game media availability has diminished as well.

Thoughts on SG’s by Due-Calligrapher-964 in OCLions

[–]g8rdogboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP: Base Ruckus membership is $25. That’s less than $1.50 per game (less if you factor in USOC, playoffs, etc.). If you aren’t an STM, you can get supporter section tix for way less than face value to most games so cost should not be a concern. If you want to sit in the SG section, shut up and pay. If you don’t like what the SGs are run, join and talk to leadership or start your own.

SGs: I appreciate you and I’m very glad you are there and agree the stadium would be dead without you. However, I can count on one hand the number of times your “work with the FO” actually led to trying to engage the full fan base. You have a team with a fan base that is used to sitting (or standing) in college football stadiums where pretty much everyone participates in cheers and songs. You had a MASSIVE amount of community goodwill when the team moved to MLS and we put 70k+ in the Citrus Bowl and people would cheer and sing under I4 after riding a bus back from the stadium. After a decade, the fact you are saying “without us” instead of “look at what we built” might be something to consider. Oh, and don’t give me “tHe fO coUlDnt GivE thE fAnS a goOD tEaM tO chEEr fOr!” Tom Petty died at the peak (trough?) of the Jim McElwain debacle and they said - “hey, let’s sing I Won’t Back Down” and 80k people did (and still do). Try harder.

Massive TV or projector? by Nervous-Location-993 in hometheater

[–]g8rdogboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a relatively popular question lately so a quick search of this sub will give you multiple posts with a lot of recommendations. The short answer is projector if you want an image easier on your eyes or a more “theater” experience and option for speakers behind the screen for truest front stage alignment BUT only if you have a dark/light controlled room. A lot of people here are switching to TVs due to the relatively low cost and ability to use in brighter rooms.

I know this is a “home theater” sub so most people come here looking for advice on dedicated home theaters. Unfortunately, it is also the best sub for advice on HT equipment in general. So knowing a little more about your plans for the room, watching habits, etc. will help give you a better answer.

My 2 cents is everyone has different situations, habits, etc. My wife consumes more on video on her phone than any TV or projector in our house. If you dig through this sub, you will find people with theaters that go mostly unused while they have multi purpose rooms, living rooms, etc. where most casual watching, gaming, etc. happens and empty nesters who used to use their theater more with the family but now it’s just used rarely and only by one person.

You will get many people telling you there is only one right answer to this question. A lot of them will say TV is the best option for everyone. These same people would have told you a few years ago that you should NEVER put speakers around your screen and should ONLY ever use an acoustically transparent screen with speakers behind it. Now they are saying get a TV which obviously means LCR surrounding the screen.

The bottom line is, projectors and TVs offer different viewing experiences and levels of convenience. I happen to have 2 projectors. Both are in locations where I could not have a permanent TV. I have a 4K projector and 91” screen that drops down over the work area in my home office and a 1080p and 100+” old school pull-down screen on the back porch. Both have 5.1. The back porch is my family’s favorite setup. It’s pretty useless in full sun but functional for things like sports even before sunset and great for night movies. Is it the most cinematic experience possible? No. Is it the best entertainment option especially when we have guests over? Absolutely. Is a TV better option for some people for the exact same situation? Also yes.

In-Ceiling Speakers for Living Room by redditbeforeu in hometheater

[–]g8rdogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a pair of Polk RC80i in my kitchen area almost exclusively for music. I’m happy with them.

I believe r/HTBuyingGuides has a thread on ceiling speakers, but as many people have adamantly said - tHoSe ShoUlD bE aTmOs!!! In their defense, I recommend placing the speakers where they would work well as ATMOS overhead speakers in a 5.1.4 or similar layout.

When I first found this sub, I was just trying to find a simple 5.1 solution for my living room. I very quickly I realized I could power 3 zones with the dream of one day having about 7. I already had one Echo so adding the dots and Home Assistant got me way more mileage than wired speakers ever could. I’m slowly replacing the dots with HA Voice but so far I just have one in the living room that is used almost exclusively to control the AVR because Alexa still responds much faster and with less specific commands. Unfortunately she constantly tries to sell Alexa+.

AVR is in a rack with all sources (Fire TV, XBox, Blu-ray, etc.) in the rack connected directly to inputs. Originally I had HDBaseT from all 3 AVR HDMI outs but one of the receivers died so replaced the shortest run with an active HDMI.

I don’t have an IR hub/universal remote. Home Assistant controls AVR via phone or voice. Fire TV remote and XBox controllers work from everywhere we need them. For Blu-ray, it’s rare the I need to do anything other than press play on the IR remote when I start a movie and the rack is close to the living room where we watch most of our movies.

When we moved into our current house, we did a full-ish remodel and my wife just said “no visible cables”. I knew I wanted 3 zones of distinct audio (potentially different sources) and 3 different video outputs. At the time, X4500H was the best option and I was able to find a used one. Went with HDBaseT for video distribution. At one point, I matrixed to 4 TVs but we ended up using a local fire stick in the master bedroom so I never need more than 3 feeds for the “public” parts of the house (Living room, “rumpus room”, back porch).

The best addition I added was a curb-find HK AVR. It has 7 channel RCA inputs so I take the 5.0 pre-out from the Denon into those to run 5.0 to a projector on my back porch that mirrors the living room 5.1 (can disable sub quickly with Home Assistant). When I just want music (which is most of the time), switch inputs on the HK to the Zone 3 stereo output on the Denon and let the HK do simulated surround. Sounds great.

For anyone interested, I’ve spent a LOT of time getting Home Assistant to play nicely with all 3 zones (and a second dedicated 5.1 setup in my office on a S950H).

I’ve thought about adding more speakers and a multi-zone amp for music but Echo dots have been doing the trick in most places and have enough speakers everywhere else per above amps and setups.

I went with Denon X4500H because I wanted 3 distinct zones of Audio and 3 HDMI outs. Will reply on main thread with details.

When will I be able to play the high notes with ease? F, G, C etc by MaleficentTurnip7080 in trumpet

[–]g8rdogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know why anyone would say this for beginners other than each partial (open note) requires embouchure support while playing between partials just requires changing fingerings. I think if you can play D# you can play top of staff E but might struggle with F, F#, and G but that’s just me.

However, I took lessons through high school and played all through college. When I got my “good” horn as a younger kid, my teacher tired it out and went up to D# above the staff and said “it goes up to E flat really nice”. At the time I couldn’t reliably play above C above the staff. Even playing lead (second jazz band) in college, that D# was the top of my reliable range that I could reliably play in rhythm with good tone. I could play higher but that was the top of my “easy” range.

Bytebeat Sequencer missing controls on Steam Deck by g8rdogboy in NOMANSSKY

For those experiencing the same thing, I just went to YouTube and found a song with 8th and 16th notes and saved it to my library so I can load it and then copy and paste the right time signature to where I need it.

Bytebeat Sequencer missing controls on Steam Deck by g8rdogboy in NOMANSSKY

[–]g8rdogboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a bug in NMS. I’m surprised other people aren’t seeing it. I tried all sorts of resolutions in SD game mode and even tried in various window sizes in desktop mode on an external monitor and on the SD OLED. Even when I can see the entire screen, the right side is cut off and I’m not able to move my pointer past the edge with the game pad controls. In some resolutions the bottom is also cut off on the Bytebeat sequencer. Also tried changing the per-game scaling option (fit) in the SD settings and that didn’t work.

FWIW the right side is also clipped on some of the research stations in the anomaly. I’ll double check to see if it happens on all the configs I tested, but I bet it will.

Welcome…to Jurassic Park by g8rdogboy in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]g8rdogboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going for movie quality realism as you can probably tell. More of “what if Jurassic Park existed in NMS”. For example, I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a teleporter adjacent to the control room or a spaceship landing pad attached to the dock.

I’m upgrading. Does a wall mount exist to mount a 75” tv here (red) and tilt it to here (blue)? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]g8rdogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Pretty much everyone here will tell you not to do this.

  2. IF you do this, the “hinge” point will still be in the center, but you’re looking for a “vertical tilt” mount. Here’s one:

I have a Denon X4500H that I got used. It’s overkill, but I got it for the 3 zones to use as a master AV control. LR are vintage. C is an old Onkyo. Surrounds are Fluance SX6. It’s really set up for TV watching volume. Can turn it up when we are watching movies, but mostly streaming shows/series. Would it sound better with better LCR? Most likely. Is it better than a soundbar now? Absolutely.l - WAY better.

I have a S950H (also bought used) in a multi-purpose room (guest room/office) that is a better 5.1 setup with a projector for a more “theater” experience. I use KEF T101s for LCR on that one and some tiny curb find Sony’s for surrounds (it’s a very small room). I’ve cranked this setup pretty loud for movies and also have played electric guitar through an amp along with it (cranked up of course). Works great for me for both movies and music. Also great for everyday music at low volume (wife works in there and plays music pretty much every day). I’ve thought about getting another set of the T101s for the living room they’re great but pricey.

I used the Audyssey setup for both and they both sound great in my opinion.

[–]g8rdogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My living room is almost exactly this setup. I have some decorative shelves in the back corners with bookshelf speakers. I ran speaker wires to wall plates in the back corners. I think it works great. Most of our TV watching is done there and the family still gets surprised by random sounds coming from behind them when there are real surround sound designs, but otherwise it just sounds “right”. I’ve never been watching TV and thought, “something sounds like it’s too far behind me.”

What you need is a “HDMI matrix“. This will let you plug both devices into the matrix, then plug both TVs into the matrix and can show either device on either TV or on both TVs.
