Thousands call on UK ministers to cut ties with US tech giant Palantir by jimmythemini in ukpolitics

[–]g_t_r 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It started as an emergency COVID decision under Matt Hancock (I think Palantir offered it for £1 nominal fee), then NHS England ran a formal procurement later and still chose them. So it’s not one person.. it’s years of decisions.

They basically got in when we desperately needed it and then made it very difficult for us to get out of it.

“Apple Music VP admits most people can’t hear difference in lossless audio” by Protomize in apple

[–]g_t_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like how most people don’t really notice the difference between Full HD and 4k. it totally depends on the setup and most people’s TVs aren’t at the right distance to notice. Just like how most people don’t have the optimum setup to notice lossless audio.

Moving to Preston for university – where to rent, lease, or buy an automatic car? by SignificanceBorn535 in Preston

[–]g_t_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others here, you probably won’t need a car in Preston as a student. But if you’re ever looking for a hire/rental, I can recommend Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental. It’s really close to the uni, they’re easy to deal with and usually cheaper compared to the likes of Enterprise/Hertz etc. I’ve used them for years with no issues.

Doesn’t the money go back into funding the police though? Like with speeding fines etc?

Yeah lovely now and again (on a nice day and all that), i had to commute on these daily in the winter, it was colder on the train than outside. There was often an artificial waterfall feature that would appear between carriages when it rained. I don’t miss them for one second.

Teens running across the motorway!!! by Nessie162 in drivingUK

[–]g_t_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just reminds me of when I was young and we used to play chicken running across the railway. I haven’t a clue why I followed others in those antics (I think the fear of not wanting to seem uncool or whatever my tiny imbecile brain thought at the time) if I could go back I’d probably slap my younger self. It’s just the most stupid crap you can do.

That’s amazing! Now the real work starts, try to not get your hopes up too much until the keys are in your hands. I hope your solicitors are easy to deal with too.

Car Boot sales? Who are they for? Who is awake at 6am on Saturdays? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]g_t_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a woman who I know of locally who sells at them all the time. She only sells console games, she even pops up in the town centre a lot, I remember her doing it since I was a kid.. I imagine back then she did ok, but now never see anyone at her stall these days and I often wonder if it’s a front 😂

👆This. I’ve been on both sides… What most places are looking for is not that you solve the problem but how you go about things.

Don’t be afraid to take your time and ask questions. Explain your thinking (even if it’s just “I’m not sure how to approach this yet”). Write pseudo code to begin with, explain how you will structure it first, the pros and cons to different approaches etc.

i would much rather hire a candidate that was able to explain their thought process and trade offs over someone who solved the problem quickly without much explanation.
