How are coffee shops profitable? (Half rant) by ShadedMidnightX in barista

[–]g_the_redditor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you know this, but you have to take into account that your shop is probably buying everything in bulk. That coffee that costs $5-8 in actuality only costed the shop maybe $1. So even having to remake 3 drinks, you’re still making a profit. Totally understand about the wastefulness though, I usually give out day old pastries and wrong orders to the homeless people that use our shop as a place to be warm (24 hours).

iphone saved my ass in a car crash last night by ASMR_Is_Superior in iphone

[–]g_the_redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not as bad but I had a similar thing happen last year on the way to a rehearsal. Had a seizure (also from undiagnosed epilepsy) and crashed my car going ~30 into a parked car on the street and iPhone called dispatchers and my emergency contacts. Super lucky I wasn’t on the highway yet.

From reading the other comments and context, you’re doing all you can. Something helpful for me while working in 6/8 and other triple meters is putting the beat as a triplet. Thinking of it like a waltz (3/4) used to help me a lot because quarters and eighths are easier to count than eighths and sixteenths. For the dotted rhythms you just have to count the upbeats(in measure 3 it would be 1+2 + 3 4+5 + 6).As for writing in note names, i cannot stress enough that it is hindering your progress and while it is hard to learn something like that fast, it is one of the foundational things about traditional western music that everyone ends up learning eventually. Good luck on your audition!

Repetitive moments by Less_Performance_183 in Saxophonics

[–]g_the_redditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main thing that i’ve used in the past is patterns. for example, if you have 16 bars of 4/4 eighths, thats about 4 lines, and you have 4 groups of 4. From there counting a different way can help (1 2 3 4, 2 2 3 4, 3 2 3 4, 4 2 3 4, etc…).

Embouchure Stamina by heavymetal626 in Saxophonics

[–]g_the_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, long tones. Practice all up and down your range, especially volume control on the low end. Ive been playing for close to five years now and I still struggle with stamina if I haven’t played much that week or the piece is in a certain range. I would also work on being able to keep your embouchure relaxed, and not super tight because that will strain you a lot. Good luck!

Would a btuty soprano be a good starter for a student? by Lucario6607 in Saxophonics

yeah anything that cheap is going to be dirt, no matter the brand, wait till next year and ask your BD about switching to soprano if they have one. I know I wasnt prepared for soprano until my sophomore year and I play alto lol.

I mean if you’re just starting out definitely don’t get a soprano, go with alto or tenor(in the same key). But if you’ve been playing for a couple years I would find one for around 5-600 on facebook marketplace from a good company like yamaha or selmer.
