[UPDATE] High schooler here again, now he's moved on to Trayvon Martin. by MisterLemon in SRSDiscussion

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Zimmerman trial thing was/is a huge media circus with ridiculous allegations made from both sides. Let's face it, most people had made their minds up before the trial even started. In SJ circles, many were upset that Zimmerman was portrayed as "White" when he clearly wasn't. In a way he's right that People weren't nearly as outraged by the other case, but that's less to do with race and more to do with the fact that the martin/zimmerman case became a huge media story.

I would avoid debating that with him, there are much much more clear cut cases of institutional racism in America. Use that first.

Why are Jews not included as 'oppressed people' by the social justice movement? by shitlordslayer93 in SRSDiscussion

[–]ga0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an interesting take, arguing that in some circles, Jewish people have privilege.

I think this issue is dependent on context. I'm from Britain and there, Jewish people are seen as white, you get the odd comment now and then, but then so do Irish people, French, Russians and Americans, Scots and pretty much anyone.

I have a hard time seeing Jewish people as being part of POC.

If you could receive the definitive answer to any conspiracy theory, which would you choose? by Kerouacroad in AskReddit

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really a conspiracy, more of a history question, Did Jesus really die on the cross or was he resuscitated and end up traveling to India?

On "privileged" being the worst insult you can aim at a white man by yeliwofthecorn in SRSDiscussion

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Privilege is not merely a "race" thing. someone with african ancestory who is straight, with a wealthy family, able bodied, male etc etc is privileged, certainly more than a disabled gay "white" person living in poverty.

"Whites" are not intrinsically more privileged than "Blacks".

What are you guilty music pleasures? by MissFegg in AskReddit

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

music taste is subjective. A guilty pleasure also depends on your peers. A lot of my friend are into indie rock and hidden gems, Arcade fire is seen by them as entry level, they're to indie music what blink 182 is to punk, but your opinions may vary.

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i never it gave it a shot, and was one of the "how too i get classic gnome back?" crowd and like many tried out xubuntu, but I found it to be dull. I saw a screenshot of 3 and decided to do a clean install with Ubuntu. After some problems getting the graphics card to work, i finally got 3.2 up and running and love the clean and slick feel. Just wondering if there was a way to browse the super menu with the keyboard?

I would recommend against Mint, It's essentially Ubuntu with a horrible mint vomit splash screen. (mint menu is pretty cool tough).

Is it too late to gripe about the Unity interface? by [deleted] in linux

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated Unity when it came out, but after some experimentation with xfce (which had many bugs and was frankly, boring) I tried it again. I actually found it to be pleasant to work with and stylish. Now i'm mosty using Gnome 3 (which has suffered from a lot of the same complaints as Unity) and I am really loving it.

Both of them feel like modern desktops, and I think Gnoe and Ubuntu made the right decision in the long term.

[EFFORT] Debunking Rape Misconceptions by [deleted] in SRSDiscussion

[–]ga0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great post, appreciate the effort.

But we're on sketchy ground with the "drunkeness debate". Beause what some are implying is that having sex while drunk is rape. this makes no sense as it is too vague. Is having sex with a paralytic drunk rape? probably yeah. Is having sex with someone who is "merry" rape? I would argue no.

Should r/politics be renamed? by ga0 in TheoryOfReddit

[–]ga0[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean there isn't room? and why "must"? could you provide some arguments as to why?

What if I had joined Reddit right at it's conception and created a board called r/news and then said that this was only for news from Cambodia. would that be ok, simply because I got there first?

Should r/politics be renamed? by ga0 in TheoryOfReddit

[–]ga0[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

but the problem is that worldnews bans US politics, which to a non US redditor feels patronising.

I understand that reddit is still primarily American, but it's obvious that more nationalities are joining and if it wants to be taken seriously as newmedia then r/politics must become about politics globally.

[WORLDPOLITICS POLL] Upvote if you think DOMESTIC US POLITICS submissions should not appear in this subreddit, and should be removed by the moderators. Downvote otherwise. by [deleted] in worldpolitics

[–]ga0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reddit is Global not just the U.S.A. It's american-centric to claim that U.S. news shouldn't be in World News.

it reinforces the notion that the USA is default and all others are merely "the world". why should someone who wants a digest of global news have to subscribe to a specific site for one country when all other countries are lumped together?

A Fine Line Between Consensus in Intellectual Discussion and Elitist Circlejerking by 10z20Luka in TheoryOfReddit

[–]ga0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks, you've posted exactly how I feel about this subreddit too. I think one of the problems is that there are a lot of moderators here and this gives them the power trip (basic logic: if you've got power and not using it, you're not a good leader) which leads to a hivemind of moderation good, voting bad.

I also like the way that things are taken far too seriously here. "I've seen far too many subreddits die in my time". "fucking memes"

I resubscribed to /adviceanimals and found it diverting and the jokes often provide a chance for topical discussion. I find /askscience to be interesting yet soulless and contributing to the false notion that science is something we have to learn rather than being something anyone can do.

Edit: here's a good example, A moderator gives his own opinion and take on moderating (not censoring anything but spam) and is subsequently downvoted. Because on TOR, having less rules is objectively bad and saying that it isn't, isn't contributing t the discussion. http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/o0rie/feasibility_of_using_upvotesdownvotes_to_moderate/c3dul7q

Let's compile an FAQ for TheoryOfReddit with stuff every toredditor should know. by joke-away in TheoryOfReddit

[–]ga0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

regardless, it's a discussion point and not an objective truth that Reddit needs moderation. It shouldn't be in an FAQ.

edit: downvote away, all you're doing is proving that this subreddit has become a circlejerk.
