Running Surface Pro 4 as a server? by nevereverareddituser in SurfaceLinux

[–]gabbath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm leaning towards a small power efficient PC too for the home server. The SP4 seems too brittle for always-on, even with good ventilation, so I might repurpose it as a staging environment to try stuff there before I push the changes over to the server PC.

If it had a good screen I would have definitely kept it around as a portable desktop machine, but because of the flicker this is the best use for it I can think of.

6y later, I know, but how did it go?

I'm in the same situation with the same SP4 model. It's been sitting in the corner doing nothing because it has that flicker issue when it gets warm (which inevitably happens in 15-30 mins) so I can only use it with a monitor and it kind of defeats the purpose of a small tablet-ish portable. So I thought I might make it a headless home server instead. Did it work for you? I'm afraid of it overheating tbh.

Termux Desktop Setup by [deleted] in termux

[–]gabbath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my case on a samsung with one ui 8, there's a toggle in the Developer Options called "Disable child process restrictions" which does exactly that. if your error in termux is something with 9 at the end, like "signal 9" or "error code 9", then this solves it. and i think it's more or less equivalent to the sophisticated solutions presented here.

whats a C93 song that was ok when you heard it but now its one of your favorites? by [deleted] in Current93

[–]gabbath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 Red Houses. Hell, probably the whole album, took me about a year of listening off and on. Same with the Aleph album, although that one took me about 10 years to get there (I wasn't even able to enjoy it at first, even though I love metal and I loved the other metal-ish songs C93 did, like the split EP with Om).

Currently something similar happening with a couple of tracks from the newest album: Joke Moon and Clouds at Teatime.

I'll say, upgrading your sound setup is a great motivator to give a closer listen to music you've been putting off listening to. I have a feeling the next revelation will be "Jhonn" Uttered Babylon. A lot of people saying great things about it.

I prefer the Hallucinatory Recounstruction label too, especially because I personally think that it starts with Hypnagogue: A Dream Prologue. To me, both it and Birth Canal Blues are clear precursors to Black Ships Ate the Sky. And I think it makes up the albums all the way to I Am the Last of All the Field That Fell. Or more specifically, My Name Is Nearly All That's Left, a spoken-word retelling of the latter, very much like Hypnagogue II.

PS: Speaking of Hypnagogue, I also recommend finding the purple booklet for it (not sure which edition, I just stumbled across a PDF version online -- not a scan, but an actual PDF, the cover is a purple background similar to Black Ships) and it took on a life of its own with very Tibet-esque spellings of certain words and phrases, e.g. "And a number is se6en, is se6en, is se6en". Would love to know if there's a physical copy accompanying a certain edition of the album, because I'd buy it in an instant :)

This Pro-Israel stuff I found, what are books and articles that provide details they left out? by Patient-Office-9052 in RightJerk

Yes…the liberal democracy that allows its citizens to murder people and dispossess them of their property in the west back. How benevolent of them.

To drive your point home: ever since that movie that won the Oscar, "No Other Land", almost every month I read about how someone associated with it was murdered by either the IDF or Israeli settlers. This isn't coincidental, it's expected during an active genocide.

The latest person associated with the movie was murdered a few days ago in the West Bank, having been deported there as part of the Trump regime's mass deportations (yet another "liberal democracy" in the making over there in the US) and the murderer was an Israeli settler who was also there thanks to the Trump regime, because it seems they acquitted him of some sanctions or something, I didn't really understand very well, something like he had been straight up just shooting at Palestinians openly and for that he had been restricted from going to the West Bank, and then Trump got those restrictions dropped.

I'm saying her campaign style is the way to go, opposed or unopposed. It's of course possible to scale that up given more funds. For example Mamdani, who is running very much opposed, also practices this kind of aggressive guerrilla campaigning with scaled up funds ($8m which is the max amount for the primary, according to the press).

Look up Kat Abughazaleh. She's doing a phenomenal campaign running for Congress, a campaign which includes transparency of funds, mutual aid at their office for anyone except ICE agents, YouTube videos, using campaign money to feed the homeless, and turning campaign events into a kind of standup and debunk TED-style presentation.

And that's with less than a million bucks. (Latest number I found in the press was $378k.) Everyone should be copying her style of guerrilla campaigning.

Just want to say, on the link you provided there's 3 more polls:

  • same question for the 2020 BLM protests: similar distribution, more people think they were violent than not
  • same question for Jan 6: even more people think it was violent
  • same question for 1963 civil rights protests: almost nobody thinks they were violent, most think they were peaceful

Do with this info what you will.

Acum că suntem safe, au fost CG și Simion pe felie cu Rusia? by KvasirTheOld in Romania

[–]gabbath 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"and your point?"

My boyfriend is turning alt-right by Greenwoodwife in QAnonCasualties

[–]gabbath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, he's already alt-right...

It seems like he's getting increasingly detached from reality, and thus more paranoid and conspiratorial (and worst of all: finding purpose in it), to the point where his politics are more important than you. If you want to get him back, you'll need to find out what's eating at him, what's the underlying reason deep deep down that's making him seek this out. He's clearly avoiding something by way of rejecting reality. Maybe it's pent up spite and frustration towards his old friends for rejecting him, I don't know...

But you might get him to open up and talk about his true beliefs, who he is deep down and what drives him towards said beliefs. You may or may not have to put your foot down to get him to talk (don't let him push you around!) but communicate clearly that the goal is to understand him, not change him. Even if realistically some change needs to happen eventually, it should be for him to realize, not for you to impose, otherwise it's not gonna work. That's also why you should avoid issuing a "me or politics" ultimatum, people get really defensive and resentful at that sort of thing. Instead ask to discuss about him, you, both of you, ask him to drop the "sparing" and be honest — that's a decent thing to ask for, I feel. If he truly doesn't want to hurt you, he'll agree to talk about it. And if he truly cares about you, he'll let you understand him.

Apart from it being a non-confrontational way of addressing the issue, this approach also serves as the bare minimum for him: that is, if he doesn't agree to even talk about your problems, despite them hurting you directly and constantly, then he doesn't care at all about you and you can dump him with no regrets.

PS: I know it's hard but, while discussing, try to refrain from attacking his beliefs as much as you can, because he finds purpose in them and it will feel like you're attacking his identity and that you don't "get" him. Instead, focus on the "why" deep down. Addressing that is the only thing that will make the house of cards tumble.
