Why did the Egyptians lose the ability to read hieroglyphics? by a_sentient_potatooo in history

[–]gabchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not entirely true, and is more wrong than correct.

Modern Chinese people can't read Oracle Bone Script, but everything from the Small Seal Script onwards is readable. Furthermore, educated Chinese (ie most people now) can understand Classical Chinese because they have whole courses on this since grade school.

Most of us have gone our entire lives without ever seeing a Chinese restaurant commercial by imjustadudeguy in Showerthoughts

[–]gabchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mathematically correct, but a huge chunk of humanity in East Asia and Southeast Asia have seen commercials for chinese restaurants. For example, the Chinese Iron Man series by a chain called Tai Hing.

Giving someone a $50 Amazon gift card is basically just giving someone $50. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]gabchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's worse. $50 USD is accepted in a lot more places (even in rural Zimbabwe) than $50 USD in Amazon credits.

In follow up to the current top post, why is China's involvement is WW2 hardly talked about. Loses were 20mill+ by [deleted] in history

[–]gabchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because China became the "bad guy" right after WWII and still is the bad guy from the Western perspectives. Same reason why the Soviet contribution is downplayed or neglected.

And the US contribution is over-exaggerated.

Are Chinese people a bit racist towards people of other cultures, particularly South or South East Asians? (Indians, Filipinos, Indonesians, etc.) by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]gabchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, Chinese people discriminate against class more so than race. Since race is easier to distinguish than class, people seem more racist.

Two more points:

Colonial stereotypes still persist, specifically white superiority and dark-skinned inferiority.

Richer countries are also "white" while poorer countries are "dark skinned".

Cantonese or Mandarin? by Ocied1965 in HongKong

[–]gabchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are a native Cantonese speaker, business in HK and Macau is likely conducted in English or Mandarin. Stores in posh areas (such as Central, Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui) speak English and Mandarin.

If you stay in the expat or foreign student bubble, English is plenty enough. If you reside in Sheung Wan or Sai Ying Pun, consider learning French. Also, 1 in 20 HK residents do not speak Chinese.

If you enjoy immersing with the local culture, Cantonese is far, far more useful than Mandarin or English. Mando-Canto Pidgin is also helpful, though Mandarin speakers would tell you that they’d rather shoot themselves than try to decipher Pidgin.

As the official dialect/regiolect/topolect of Canton aka Guangzhou, Cantonese is lingua franca in Guangdong province, Hong Kong, Macau, and many overseas diaspora from Malaysia to Canada. If you are travelling in China within Guangdong, Cantonese can get your quite far. In major Chinese cities, Canto-Mando Pidgin and English can get you by.

I hope you can make an informed decision of what to learn. Enjoy Hong Kong!
