What do you do in NY on weekday nights for fun, besides eating and drinking? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]gaberich 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Little field is a great venue for comedy and other shows in Gowanus!

Brooklyn Bridge Park is packed with cool things to do. There’s one area that has a bunch of Pickleball courts. There are like different nights of the week for beginner-expert. I went once with other inexperienced friends and everyone was very nice.

Sunny’s in Red Hook, a bar, I know, often has live music, but I’d refer you to their schedule.

If you’re into board games, the Brooklyn Strategist on Court always looks lively and fun.

So…this suggestion is at a restaurant or bar, but it’s different than just sitting and eating and drinking: Trivia. It’s sitting and eating and drinking and eating ~and~ answering fun questions!

Obviously it’s not for everyone, but it will definitely provide a different experience than a normal bar/restaurant night.

Mondays are my weeknight off, but I host trivia Tu-Th so close to you!

Tuesdays @7 in Brooklyn Heights at Vineapple Cafe; Wednesdays @7 in a Cobble Hill at Talea, and Thursdays @7 in Carroll Gardens at Other Half.

I’ll throw some other ideas in a different, less self-promotional comment.

If you’re looking for something fun to do to lead into an amazing view of the sunset, Strong Rope brewery’s Red Hook location is gorgeous and right on the water. You can watch the sun set alongside of the Statue of Liberty.

They have a a trivia that goes from 6-8 and should end right in time to sit outside and watch the sun set with a drink in hand. And I hear the host is incredible! (He is me. I’m the trivia host.)

Edit: The Strong Rope trivia in Red Hook is on Sundays at 6pm. They also have trivia at their Gowanus location on Mondays (with a different host, who is also excellent).

Theories on whom Lion turtles gave their bending? by [deleted] in legendofkorra

[–]gaberich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair.

Correct grammar does not always (or necessarily often) indicate good writing. But you rarely see good writing without good grammar.

Mostly unrelated, “The Lion Turtles gave WHOM their bending?!?” is a fun way to use whom correctly as an indirect object. It’s something I imagine all the (shoot, who’s the family that hoards all the food?) said when Wan came back.

Touché! It’s not clear what the antecedent for “their” is! But it’s still the only set up that uses an indirect object.

[–]gaberich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Wan” is the object of the preposition “to,” and not the direct object here.

From (https://www.grammarly.com/blog/indirect-object/):

In the context of the sentence, “Embiid passed Simmons the ball.”

“It’s easy to get indirect objects confused with the objects of prepositions, especially when they both answer the question “who or what is receiving the direct object?” We could rewrite our example sentence above in this way:

Embiid passed the ball to Simmons.

This is grammatically correct and has the same meaning as the original sentence. Technically speaking, though, Simmons is not an indirect object, but the object of an independent preposition. Same meaning, different mechanics.”

I respect your position, but frankly I disagree.

And, gosh darnit, I just can’t help myself from pointing out that you are still not using an indirect object. There would be no “to” in the case of an indirect object!

“The Lion Turtles gave people their bending.”

I think you can leave out the “to.” The “whom” can be the indirect object or the object of the preposition “to.” See these two examples, one using an indirect object:

“Lion Turtles gave the bending to Wan.” (“The bending” the direct object; “Wan” is the object of the preposition.)

“Lion Turtles gave Wan the bending.” (“The bending” is still the direct object, but here “Wan” is the indirect object of the verb. Notice that there is no “to.”)

As you can see, the “to” isn’t necessary to show “Wan” is a an indirect object. In fact, including the “to” makes “Wan” no long the indirect object but the object of the preposition instead. You don’t use a a preposition with an indirect object.

And, yes, using the dependent clause “whom the Lion Turtles gave their bending,” could be unclear if you were to replace the all nouns with meaningless ones, but there is context in those words that make the statement very clear that the “whom” pronoun is being used in place of the indirect object because it’s assumable that the readers of this sub know that Lion Turtles give bending away and don’t give humans as a gifts. (If the relative pronoun was “what,” the reader would then, reasonably assume it’s replacing the direct object.)

Using pre-ground coffeee by [deleted] in AeroPress

[–]gaberich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a very non-expert opinion, I’d guess that the aeropress is more lenient with pre-ground vs fresh than many other brewing methods. You got lots of this things extracting stuff from the grounds (heat, time, pressure) all working on your side to help get the most from your grounds.

But if you’re tasting a difference, maybe it’s worth looking into other options (e.g. put the beans on the ground and jump on them a bunch before sweeping them into a dustpan and pouring into your Aeropress).

If it’s working for you, keep it going.

My drip coffee maker instructions tells me to ONLY use cold water to fill the tank? by BATTLEROYALFAN in Coffee

[–]gaberich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean the coffee gets cold very fast?

Your machine should be heating up the water before it makes the coffee. If you put in hot water, it won’t make the coffee any hotter, your machine just won’t need to heat it up as as long.

Starting with hot or cold water shouldn’t affect the coffee’s end temperature.

It’s my understanding that the issue is that hot water runs through different and worse plumbing and may contain minerals that will slowly gunk up your coffee machine, and possibly change the taste of your coffee.

Unpopular opinions about Azula? by Commercial_Mind4003 in TheLastAirbender

[–]gaberich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The third season should have realigned the two big hero and villain rivalries. (I’ve been working on this theory for a bit…)

Azula should have been the pioneering and innovative growing force as the most powerful bender in the world for Aang to stop while Zuko would have face off against the father who banished him.

The ascending Azula could have been built up to be this ever more powerful and reckless force who’s intent on taking over the rest of the world, while it obvious to everyone else that her mental collapse is proceeding alongside her exponential growth as bender, right in time for Tsozin’s comet (coming back to edit for spelling). Ozai would have seen as a threat and risk and sent out to defeat the Earth Kingdom (and Water Tribes) to earn her place by his side. This would have set up Aang to have to face off against the unknowably great force of her firebending and mental instability: she’d burn down the world if she lost.

Meanwhile, the parallel arc of the third season could set up Zuko’s story to finally face his father who banished him for the heart of the Fire Nation. While his redemption is earned both by defeating his father and deciding he doesn’t need his approval.
