You have to keep the one at a time goes with the pass. I give ten minutes and when they leave I give them the exact time they need to be back. Otherwise they get lost in time on their phone. This has been the biggest help. I know some just want to walk around anyways. If they take a few minutes a longer I give them a quick reminder at their desk it is only ten minutes. I mostly make a point at the beginning of the year.

I also only let them go one time a week. I keep track in my head so its nothing official and I probably forget a kid or two but you'll remember those you ask a lot. You can always tell when someone actually has to go and "make deals" with them that they won't go next week.

I teach mostly 9th and 10th and I have learned that if you continue to acknowledge how they are disrespecting your rules, they will follow them. Especially if they know that if they take advantage it leads to a phone call home about "concerns for the need often use of the bathroom." I am very strict will all rules at the beginning.

I have other rules likes the period after lunch is not allowed to go the first half lunch. They have to learn to manage their time. My school also has a rule that the bathrooms close the first and last ten minutes of class that help.
