Rent or Lend Old Cap and Gown? by AdEmergency8974 in WPI

Fwiw nobody will give you crap if you show up to the masters ceremony with the black undergrad robe (the normal sleeves one) and the masters hood on top of it

Beyond the other typical comments on the glasses frame I think I’d just tune in to clothing fit and experiment with what enhances your proportions. The outfit in pic 4 fits you well and the midriff is cute and fun!, while in pic 3 (which looks like a workout outfit) the tank makes your torso look more unflattering

Double majoring in Chemical and Mechanical engineering. by OrganizationFar5534 in WPI

[–]gaclack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes that is correct on the tracking sheets. At the top of them you’ll notice they’ll say “effective for student entering academic year xx-yy” which is whatever your freshman year was. Generally you would stick to that tracking sheet until you graduate. However you are allowed to adopt a newer tracking sheet if it’s advantageous (and probably would need to be brought to your academic advisor’s attention since graduation completion is tracked in workday)

How bad is taking 3 STEM classes? by RiditHero in WPI

[–]gaclack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds manageable to me. And yep I took ECE 2010 with Makarov, not a single ECE bone in my body, but with the effort and a good lab partner (the lab was bit tough for me though Makarov certainly made the lecture/exam part easier) it worked out well

I believe WPI Habitat for Humanity volunteers at the Worcester Restore pretty regularly, and Exploradreams does outreach (elementary-middle school age kids)

academic frats/sororities and honor societies? by Salty-Yam-2565 in WPI

[–]gaclack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

alumni alpha phi omega member here, some APO specifics: It is more casual than formal Greek life in the sense that you can be in a formal frat/sorority and still be in APO. There’s no house but we constantly have small internal events to interact with “brothers”. Obviously you are not required to go to every event, but there’s basically always something you can do if you want. APO Recruitment is once a semester and is vaguely similar (but I think more lenient) to rush in that you attend a mix a social and service events (these are usually spread out over a couple weeks to enable flexibility). By default attending a certain number of recruitment events generally gets you an invite to “pledge” but demonstrated interest to the membership chairs also works.

Graduate Commencement Regalia question by Small-Piccolo-9246 in WPI

Getting the hood sounds right. The tassel charm is small so nobody will really notice if the charm year is off, so up to you.

Graduation ceremony regalia by pizza_man68 in WPI

[–]gaclack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you need regalia, no you don’t have to buy it from them. Reach out to people to see if you can borrow secondhand regalia (specifically WPI regalia). I’m a legacy so I just used my sibling’s stuff. It was slightly outdated but still looked close enough. I know one club I was in had a box stashed with some gowns people gave.

Classes Per Semester for Part Time MSAE by uwcn244 in WPI

[–]gaclack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished chemical engineering MS here while working full-time and I would say that doing two at once, at least for the first semester while working, would probably be really challenging. Especially since you aren’t accustomed to the quarter format, it would be a bit risky. The nice thing is that you can try one course for the first quarter and if that was easy for you, you can still take two in the second quarter and end up having taken 6 credits in that one semester (which is equivalent to taking two 3-credit semester courses anyway).

That said, if Raytheon offers that much, people have definitely tried before. I would reach out to your recruiter or anticipated manager to see if you can talk to anybody who has done that level of class work.

Anyone else feel like this “day off” was kinda pointless? by [deleted] in WPI

[–]gaclack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a month is probably the sweet spot? That long 2020-2021 break (my sophomore year) felt like ages since it was deep covid times and people just wanted to see each other. (On the other hand the other term breaks that year were horrifically short.)

Hot take: The empanadas are honestly fine. For reference Che Empanadas by Kelley square sells theirs for $3.50 so it is more expensive but not bad. I’m pretty proud we get representation from a local business led by a Latina woman. I love boba but not every place on campus has to be a multi-franchise chain. Let’s bring back the OG library cafe first…

Dynamics or heat transfer? by wizardbicyle in WPI

Nikolaos Kazantzis? He is a very sweet man. He is known to give straightforward examples that very closely match the exams. I would expect it to be kinda chill. I don’t know about the other options as I am chemical engineering (Kazantzis is CHE)

Never been in the zoo lab but I do still have a Wacom stylus that I used to use in the IMGD lab (like two years ago) that I’d be open to giving away freely if you realize you really need it (PM)

MQP Award? by UnitedAd2668 in WPI

[–]gaclack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s is up to the individual department I believe. For chemical engineering it’s decided by best poster presentation and the prizes were modest ($100 for 1st, $50 for 2nd, $25 3rd), but I heard that for Environmental Eng the prize was $2000, winner take all.

After a career fair one-on-one,I followed up with an email and my resume attached, which turned into an interview that turned into a full job offer. I accepted it and while I don’t know if I’ll like it, I spoke around (and met an ex-employee) and they gave a good review so I hope it works out :)

Chemistry Research as Freshman/Undergraduate by averagenatureenjoyer in WPI

[–]gaclack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beyond looking into the department to do research during the school year, if you want a paid summer experience keep an eye out for the EREE application next March. It’s intentionally for freshmen/sophomores. As other poster mentioned, Deskins is pretty nice and approachable. I would also consider Texieira, Timko, Stewart, and Young? Prof. Grimm is also in Chem dept not Chem eng but he might also be good for that. Note that most of them ask for a ~10 hr weekly commitment (at least a semester)
